Europe Daylight Time) From: Marion Kippers Subject: Request for Anna Domino info for the Ectoguide Hi, I'm working (finally!) on the entry for Anna Domino for the Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music, and there are some gaps that I would like to fill. So, if anybody could help me with this info I would appreciate it! Here's what I'd like to know: - - Anything about her very first EP called "East and West" (released in 1982); release info, availability, ecto priority, group members, guest artists, producer, and preferably also some comments on the album. (I only found out about this in her discography at http://www.walrus.com/~lode/domino/ and it's mentioned in the 'about the author'-section for the "Favorite songs from the twilight years" cd on that same website) - - For the album "Anna Domino" (1984) I would like to know the group members and guest artists and what they do on the album, and who produced it. - - For the album "This time" (1987) I would like to confirm if Anna did anything besides vocals (perhaps accordion?), and whether Michel Delory was already a group member and if so, what he did (I would assume guitar, and perhaps programming?). - - For the album "Colouring in the edge and the outline" (1988) I would like to confirm what Michel Delory played (again, probably guitar and programming). And did Anna do anything besides vocals (perhaps accordion)? - - Anything about her compilation album "L'Amour fou" (1989); release info, availability, ecto priority, group members, guest artists, producer, and preferably also some comments on the album. (This was mentioned in one of the comments Neile sent me, and it's also in the elaborate Les Disques du Crepuscule discography which can be found on http://home.wxs.nl/~frankbri/crepuscule.html ) - - Finally, for the album "Favorite songs from the twilight years 1984-1990" I would like to know the group members and guest musicians and what they do (I'd guess that's a combination of the people who worked on the previous albums), who produced the album, and where it's a available (+ release info). Oh, and on a Virginia Astley homepage it is mentioned that Virginia met and worked with Anna during the Les Disques Du Crepuscule period with Virginia contributing to some of Anna's songs. (See http://users.netmatters.co.uk//pabs/VA/index.html , under 'Contacts') Anybody know anything about that? If you know anything, please let me know, in private e-mail or on the list. Thanks! I think my comments are the only ones on the page, so >if you have something more to say, it would be great to flesh it out. After listening to the review copy that came in for The Ectophiles' Guide, I ordered a copy for myself and really like it too. I wonder how her new album is coming along? She mentioned it would be available sometime this year, I think. She was pretty excited about it and the people she was working with for it. Anyway, I'd still recommend picking up the first one. And speaking of second albums to anticipate, on Saturday I went to Folklife to hear Willow live for the first time. She's one of the Persephone's Circle group that Mary Lydia Ryan is part of, and I bought her tape when I went to hear Mary play at a Persephone's Circle concert and grew to like it a lot. Willow live was wonderful--she's got a strong voice and great songwriting that makes her stand out amongst the singer-songwriters I've heard. The songs really pull you into her performance. She has a newly available CD-R of some acoustic solo work, and I'm really enjoying it. Mellow at times and powerful at time. She has one of those rich, rough, expressive voices. I'm trying to think of comparisons--maybe to the lower voiced one of the Indigo Girls? Anyway, I like her songwriting better, myself. (I liked Indigo Girls for a while but their songwriting quickly bored me, and now I find their style cliched--which isn't exactly their fault, more how much they are imitated but I can't help liking what I like and not liking what I don't like, even though I try to change my mind.) Anyway, Mary was there at the Folklife show and came up to say hi and that her second album was coming along well and they were getting close to doing the final mixes. She anticipates it being ready at the end of July. From what I've heard of the new material live, it's going to be incredible. She also said how strange it feels now to be sending out that first disc still when her work has changed so much--and it has, it has matured greatly from what I've heard. But I pointed out that a lot of the people on this list (including myself) really enjoy the first disc. She said how grateful she was for Ectophiles' support. You know, it's really cool how we can make a difference in people's musical careers, just by being interested in hearing them. When I think of what a huge impact Vickie has had on Happy's career, and Meth on Veda's, and Neal and Jeff on Jewel's early career and all of the other artists we've supported in various ways over the years, you know it's pretty damn exciting, and it makes me proud to be part of this list. And also excited that there are so many great local musicians like Susan Court, Mary Lydia Ryan, Willow, and all that I can actually be there to hear their music grow, not just waiting impatiently for each disc. Wow. Veda was the first person I was ever able to hear much of their work live before it appeared on disc, and it's exciting. - --Neile - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Neile Graham ...... http://www.sff.net/people/neile ....... neile@sff.net Les Semaines: A Weekly Journal . http://www.sff.net/people/neile/semaines The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music ....... http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 01 Jun 1999 19:17:57 -0400 From: Michael Curry Subject: Over the Rhine tour dates for June >Date: Tue, 1 Jun 1999 12:48:19 -0400 (EDT) >To: over-the-rhine-announce@actwin.com >From: OTRhine@aol.com >Subject: Tour dates for June >Sender: owner-over-the-rhine-announce@actwin.com >Reply-To: owner-over-the-rhine@actwin.com > > >Here is a breakdown of OTR tour dates for the month of June. > > >Sat June 5 Schubas Chicago IL > two shows 7pm (all ages) 10pm 21+ > tickets are $10 and $13 day of show. > Tickets available via www.schubas.com or > 773.525.2508 > >Sun June 6 Peabody's Down Under Cleveland OH > Tickets $8 in advanced. $10 day of show. > Anne E DeChant is opening. > >Fri June 18 The Ark Ann Arbor MI > Tickets $10 in advance. $12 day of show. > >Sat June 19 Canal Street Dayton OH ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 01 Jun 1999 19:48:50 -0400 From: Bill Adler Subject: Christin Sohre, some impressions I've been listening to Christin Sohre's Who Will Know since it arrived last Thursday. It came with a note from Christin Sohre asking me to let her know how I like it. Well, I do. As other people have commented, it's hard to classify. There's a strong classical music presence combined with folk music in Who Will Know, along with occasional sound effects. Who Will Know is innovative and refreshing, but certainly not contrived. At first I felt that the Native American sounds on Just Another Day (the CD's first selection) were out of place, but the more I listened to Just Another Day, the more I felt that the entire song --and CD-- has a certain cohesiveness that stems from its uniqueness. Sohre's voice is enjoyable to listen to. She has a good command of the higher ranges, but can also drop down low, which is something that not all singers can do so well. I've heard some comparisons to October Project and Renaissance; I don't think she sounds either like Mary Fahl or Annie Haslam. However, like them she has a voice that stands out on its own. The music and vocals are well balanced -- each takes center stage at various times in the different songs. Musically it's quite complex, which makes listening to Who Will Know over and over again a treat -- you may discover something new the next time. One aspect of Who Will Know that I especially like is that while the Sohre's songs are folky or new-agy in terms of their subject, her songs all are pretty energetic, and certainly not, what's a good way to put it, "la-la" sounding. She creates nature-moods (again for a lack of another way to put it) well. The words give you pleasant visual vistas without any sappiness. She's a very spirited musician. I listened to it three times on my >way home, and it's gotta be up to about twelve listens through by now. >This is certainly one of the great acoustic albums of the decade; I'd >even put it next to Brenda Kahn's "Epiphany in Brooklyn". I remember being rather blase about it, too, till I had the opportunity to hear Patty play live (opening for Jewel, as a matter of fact). I think the environment has to be just right when you hear her acoustic work, but when it is, the impact stays with you. I've seen her live several times since then, and she always gives an incredible show. She also does a cover of "Crazy" which is guaranteed to knock you flat. >A comparison to some of Jewel's >early, unreleased, live work is somewhat accurate, before Jewel became >insufferably bland and over-produced, but Griffin's work here is much >better. Having heard them both in the same theater, minutes apart, I can say that Jewel is (or was) capable of the same level of performance; but there is a definite stylistic difference that probably divides their audiences somewhat. Patty leaves the emotion turned on full blast most of the time, which (even though artfully applied) probably wears some people down quicker.
