Sorry this has taken me so long. Work and travel have been eating up all my spare time. I don't know much about Jules Verdone, and I don't think I've ever seen her name mentioned on ecto. I have her (first?) album, Diary of a Liar, that I picked up on my last trip to San Francisco. I saw a copy by the stereo at Sue Trowbridge's place, and lifted it. er, went and bought my own. Sue knew Jules, or someone she was dating?, from Baltimore. She said the disc was pretty good, and I figured it was necessary for me to own a disc with a song called "Baltimore or Less" on it. I only gave it a cursory listen and thought it sounded fine, but it's still in my huge pile of things I need to get back to. neal np: Is This Desire? - PJ Harvey ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 May 1999 14:41:59 -0700 From: "Neil K. Her first name is pronounced "basha", as I recall, but I have absolutely no clue how to pronounce her last name. She used to be a backup vocalist with the pop/jazz band Matt Bianco (remember "whose side are you onnnnnn?") and then embarked on a solo career in the late 80s. As I remember she did pretty well in the UK, but never really cracked the north american market. You could draw a lot of parallels with Sade - a beautiful person who isn't born in England but moves there and starts singing smooth easy-listenin' jazzy pop, gets some hits (especially in England) with her first and second records in the 1980s, then slowly fades away over the next decade or so. Like Sade, she recently had a best hits compilation released - which is usually the hallmark of the end of a career, sadly. I can't say I'm a huge fan of her stuff, as it tends to be rather schlocky and MOR, even though she has a very nice voice. I will admit, however, that Miles Away off her first album (Time and Tide, which also contains the title track that you mention) is really catchy - if only because she sounds so darn *cheerful*! I think her second album, London Warsaw New York, was her most popular. So. That's what I know about her. - Neil K. - -- t e l a computer consulting + design * Vancouver, BC, Canada phone: (604) 254-0520 * email: tela@tela.bc.ca web: http://www.tela.bc.ca/tela/ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 May 1999 17:52:49 -0400 From: meredith Subject: Re: Happy at Tin Angel July 24th Hi! This is a single of the song she performed at the 1996 Eurovision Song Contest and has polish, english, and instrumental versions. Hauntingly nice. Julita & Paula - self titled A pair of violin playing sisters doing modernized versions of some popular classical music as well as a couple of tunes from West Side Story. Very nicely done. Sixteen - Lawa Good rock band with some nice upbeat songs, including their entry from the '98 Eurovision contest. Varius Manx - End Excellent vocals and interesting music, if I was to recommend one polish band to ectophiles this would be it. Samples of Kasia, Sixteen and Varius Manx can be found on my website, at the URL in my sig. Besides that, I did a bit of shopping and bought the following: 10,000 Maniacs - the earth pressed flat Quite good.. better than LatR, not up to the level of Our Time in Eden though.. but getting there. I especially like 'In the quiet morning' and the cover of 'Who knows where the time goes?' The Kelly Family - Almost Heaven Yes, the Euro-pop family group with enough hair to make three 80's heavy metal bands . Nothing deep going on here, just simple fun pop/rock... And finally.. Chasing Furies - With Abandon Excellent! Sort of reminded me of Jonatha Brooke on overdrive, their website bio compares them to Jonatha meets Radiohead, so I guess I wasn't too far off.
