LOUIS (strange quirky coincidence, ST. LOUIS is one of the biggest fanbases for TMBG - go figure). i discovered TMBG through their video DON'T LET START. still a great song. their first eponymous album, (which was rereleased along in 2 set i think along with LINCOLN their second album, and a bunch of BSIDES that had been compiled and released already under the title MISCELLANEOUS T) is great. i have it vinyl, and probably have worn the grooves out, since the purchase way back when. LINCOLN their second album spawned a few minor college hit (ANA NG, and THEY'LL NEED A CRANE) but i never really got into it. but it was their THIRD album (and major label debut i think) that really had them make their mark on the map. FLOOD is probably the one that i recommend as the most accessible, fun, catchy, and easiest to listen to. you'll probably remember the songs from the radio BIRDHOUSE IN YOUR SOUL, and INSTABUL NOT CONSTANTINOPLE were the two big hits, but the rest of the album is also delightfully quirky and cheerful. by the follow album though (APOLLO 18) , they were getting a little long in the tooth. TMBG always prided themselves on packing their albums full of songs. this often meant the vinyl/cassette recording of 45 minutes of 17 or 18 songs. if you calculate that out, the average song ended up being 2.5 minutes long. with the new 74+ minute CD format becoming the standard though, TMBG again wanted to give their fans their moneys worth and hence, maxed out the CD, with all that they could. except they were still recording 18 to 20 songs per CD. songs went from 2.5 min to roughly 4 min. by average. what sounds fun and perky for two and half minutes, gets kinda old and tiresome at four minutes. part of it had to do with longer songs, but part of it also had to do with the fact that it was no longer two guys fooling around amusing themselves and their fans. two other members joined in fleshing out the band into a four piece. no longer were they spontaneous and whimsical, they were, well, they were starting to sound like a generic four piece band. they started to write real honest to goodness structured songs. i mean didn't listen to TMBG for songs. i listened to TMBG for little short ditties. little snipbits of fun. not for chorus verse chorus bridge verse chorus. nope. nothin' doin' TMBG had lost their spontaniety. and thus my interest wained i lost interest in them shortly after purchasing JOHN HENRY. and really haven't tried to pick up since then. perhaps my tastes have changed, i haven't really listened to any earlier TMBG either. but something tells me, if i were to put on FLOOD or their first album, i would be bouncing all over the room, singing along to DON'T DON'T DON'T LET START...... so my advice. get FLOOD. work your way back. then work forward. and now, i must sleep. irvin ps. just got back from seeing PJ OLSSEN, APRIL MARCH, and SNAKEFARM. had to leave after three songs from SNAKEFARM, much to my chagrin, as i had to catch a bus home and my friend had to catch BART, which ends at 12:23am. fun show. but alas, i think the coupling of the three bands did a disservice to all of them. too bad. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 May 1999 10:02:26 -0500 From: Suzanne Cerquone Subject: Fwd: Fox Run Memorial Day weekend concert w/Camp Hoboken >X-Sender: lalcorn@pop.ma.ultranet.com >X-Mailer: Windows Eudora Pro Version 3.0 (32) >Date: Wed, 19 May 1999 00:03:03 -0400 >To: lalcorn@ultranet.com >From: Laurie >Subject: Fox Run Memorial Day weekend concert w/Camp Hoboken > >Hi everybody - > >Well, it's time to kick off the summer festivities at Fox Run! I hadn't really planned on seeing it on opening day, but it just worked out that I had today off from my work-study job. I went to see about advance tickets for today's early showings at the Loews theater near my school on sunday after I saw the new/old Jet Li film Black Mask but all the show's were sold out. Yesterday, I was watching the 5 pm news and they were talking about midnight showings for the movie, so i checked movelink.com and they listed the sold out shows plus a new set of showtimes. Apparently, they'd put the movie in another house in the theater just this week and so tickets weren't sold out for that house. I went and bought a ticket for the 12:45 pm showing. I was pleasantly pleased with the movie. I'd like to go see it again at some point. It's so hard to not look at it as a Star Wars movie, but it very much is NOT a Star Wars movie. It's different. I'm trying to figure out how to put it into words...umm...it's sorta like the big episodes of the X-Files where they reveal a lot but also open up a lot of other questions. the Star Wars movies have always been a big Space Saga. Sci-Fi soap opera happening in Space. This movie didn't quite reach out there. It was more like a fantasy, terran tale. Maybe along the lines of a gizmoed up Willow. There just wasn't enough "space" stuff in the movie. There's one scene of a ship going into hyperspace and the classic jumplines are not there. *sob sob* Can I kick Jake Lloyd in the pants? This little wanker of an Anakin Skywalker grows up to be Darth? come on...at some points, he carried a gravity around him that seemed fitting for a child who's led such a hard life and who has so much power, but then he reverts to being a normal kid with a big head. Ok, so he's a kid actor and he acts like a kid. I just wasn't expecting that from a Star Wars movie. Like the Ewoks, this l'il darth is aimed for the kids and he performs well. I loved Natalie Portman in The Professional and she was probably my favorite thing about Heat (well, her and the use of Moby in the climax), but I think she was out of her element with this movie. A bit. Her official accent is stilted and a bit painful and her acting isn't totally natural. But she did a good enough job. I shudder when i think of the Federation guys...they had some really bad Sulu-meets-Chekhov accents...jar jar binks and the gungans weren't as bad, but that's mainly because i was expecting them to be a lot worse and I wasn't prepared for the federation geeks. microchloridians? john williams' music is the strongest attachment to other Star Wars movies. Whenever I started doubting the movie, the music would swell up and remind me that it too is a character in the movie and goshdarnit, this is Star Wars. there's more to talk about, but half of it would be spoilers and half i just can't figure out how to 'splain. Funny - I just read a decidedly lukewarm review, which basically says everything I was expecting to hear about _The Earth Pressed Flat_, based on the live performance of the new material I saw back in March. In a nutshell: they're getting closer to what they should be (i.e. John and Mary mixed with _Wishing Chair_-era Maniacs), but they're not quite there yet. The review is at .
