(Stuff from other people's albums, etc.) I have been slowly putting the stuff together, and was wondering if any of you know of any other things she's done? I put a star next to it if I think I can find a copy, two if I have one already. Other things, does anyone know where I can find it? Call it EWS at is fussiest--anyone who gives me a line on where to find this stuff gets a copy of the CD, though! Today is Sheeba's third birthday, and Jane has unveiled plans for the release of Tree and Lips, the rest of the trilogy that she started with Child. The track listings are available at www.sheeba.ca as well as the option to pre-order them--they'll be $30 US total when they're released, but you can get autographed copies for $44.99 if you preorder, and you will probably get them quite awhile before they're released to the general public. There's also the $300 option, which gets you the masters...with handwritten setlists, no artwork, but also signed... There's only that one, pop-ish "coco voco" (sp?) song, that seemed a bit out of place to me (Mark, was it this one that reminded you of Lloyd-Webber?). Laurie was very captivating and not lacking in the charisma department. The story, as a whole, left me marooned. I agree wit the posts so far. However, the reviews in Philly were luke warm. Very avant-garde, very New York (hey I love NY), and not easy to grasp. Wonder if Rolf felt as uncomfortable as I did when Ahab, portrayed by Tom Nelis, began shining an intense yellow light right between the eyes. This was a little theater and jazzy stuff for effect. The yellow light represented the gold coin held out to reward a Moby sighting. Anyway, I thought the poor s.o.b. was going to burn out his retina. Disconcerting to say the least. How can ya relax watching this very fine actor pointing this thing in his eyes? The second row allowed me to get within five feet of Laurie and also to catch the lazer beam in my eyeball as well when Mr. Nelis beamed the audience with it. Had to be there I guess. I did notice a few folks leave at intermission. Personally, I liked it.....but I'm not nuts about it. Laurie was very captivating. My wife, who's very artsy, wanted me to give her a T shirt. *I survived Moby Dick* She did it all for me....what a gem. It was an event and I did like the thing...it got me out of the house. Laurie Anderson was interviewed live on XPN this morning. I missed that one.....poor radio reception in the 'ol office complex. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 May 1999 13:25:58 -0700 (PDT) From: Bill Subject: Oh by the way... They're now part of Elmore Leonard's book tour (it's kind of high-concept... Leonard based the band in his book on The Stone Coyotes, and used songs from them in the novel as well. The book is a send-up of the record industry). I caught them at a show in Detroit. I went to see Jill Jack (http://www.jilljack.com), an excellent local performer. I was even surprised when she wasn't the headliner (and disappointed, as it raised the ticket price to $10). But The Stone Coyotes were excellent. Country-tinged rock, with lead singer Barbara Keith on vocals. Her husband is on drums, and their son is on bass. Yup, it's a family affair. Their sound is spectacular, but what is most impressive is Keith's songwriting... brilliant yet simple, it captures blue-collarism with an edge I've never quite heard before. Great story-telling, as well. The woman looks like a stiff wind could blow her down, but her electric guitar work is grand and her powerful voice cuts through the band's raw soundscape. Anyone else seen/heard this band? I was very impressed. Maybe a little bit too rock-y for Ecto, but very good. http://www.stonecoyotes.com - -- Mark Miazga e-mail: miazgama@pilot.msu.edu 580 West Akers Hall East Lansing, MI 48825 (517) 353-3321 http://www.msu.edu/~miazgama Program Coordinator of The Common Grounds Coffeehouse. It's been common practice in the UK for a few years now. The singles charts still get all the publicity over here, so releasing two versions of each single will get your artist higher in the charts. The chart compilers are trying to limit the trend my restricting the number of different versions/ formats that can be counted towards a chart place. Simon np. Funny, I was going to write about the Beth Orton show this afternoon, but got sidetracked. I called ticketbastard this afternoon to get a pair of tickets, and was told that they were $0.99 -- apparently a WHFS promotion, not that I've heard a single mention of it on the radio. Anyway, ticketbastard being what they are, my pair of $0.99 tickets would have cost me $11 to buy over the phone, so I (well, actually, more likely Craig) will be picking 'em up over at the box office at the club sometime this week. Of course, if it _does_ sell out before we get 'em, it would have been worth the extra money, but I still couldn't tolerate the thought of a 550% mark-up...that's obscene ever by ticketbastard standards. jeff swt: _Cryptonomicon_, Neal Stephenson. There are probably still tickets for Natalie (at least lawn tickets) since it was just listed in this weekend's Post advertisement with no notation that it was sold out (they seem to be updating, since this one now lists that there are only lawn seats available for Mary Chapin Carpenter). After flipping a coin, I decided to see Beth instead. When my friend picked up extra tickets yesterday at Tower, she said it was about half sold-out. The tickets are 99 cents (or free at the door with an HFStival ticket stub if there's room), but don't forget the Ticketbastard fees of $117,492.79 (okay, it's really more like $2.50 or so). - -Cathy np - Eva Cassidy, "Live at Blues Alley" nr - "Sesame Street Unpaved" (which is much more entertaining than the MCSE study guides) - -- cathy@radix.net "We're really into saving the world and being all nutty-crunchy, as long as it's making us heaps of money." -Michael Barach, CEO of MotherNature.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 May 1999 22:05:43 -0500 From: Kim Justice Subject: they might be threads (was: a quilt of many different threads) At 12:13 AM -0500 5/18/99, JoAnn Whetsell wrote: >-they might be giants. what do people know about them? they have a lot of >albums, and i've only heard john henry. i like most of it, but there are >some songs i absolutely hate. detest. perhaps abhor. any recommended >albums?
