I will be visiting Toronto for the first time next week. It's a business trip, so I don't know how much free time I'll be able to eke out, but a list of area CD stores would be very handy. As for resident pets, two (related) theories: (1) I would note that the higher the store traffic the greater the chance for physical or psychological harm to the animal. Therefore the presence of such a pet indicates the store probably has a manageable clientele. I've also read about resident pets (cats again usually) in small town libraries. Same principle. (2) In stores that strive for high volumes of customers, the latter are animals enough. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 May 1999 09:45:57 -0500 From: Suzanne Cerquone Subject: Re: Gillian Welch Neal wrote: >np: Joe and Sue's Tune-splosian '98 (track: Debt - Jules Verdone) Hey Neal, Saw your "NP" and was wondering how familiar you (or any Ecto Bostonians) are with Jules Verdone's music. Ah, the book thread again! :) I tend to gravitate toward authors whose styles sometimes grate on me, but they're telling such a damned good story, I just don't care. Melissa Scott is tops on that list. Sometimes I want to mark the thing up in red pen and send it back (in each book she's got two or three phrases she just uses OVER and OVER and OVER). But books like _Shadow Man_, _Burning Bright_ and _Dreamships_ are so much more than the sum of her phrasing. They're the kind that stay with you forever. Then there are the authors who are so brilliant, it seems they can't manage to write more than one book per decade. Maureen F. McHugh is a prime example of this. Her first novel, _China Mountain Zhang_ won several awards (including a Lambda Award), and for good reason. It's a chilling, yet compelling vision of a not-so-far future that just might end up happening. Its follow-up, _Half The Day Is Night_ was similarly effecting, though in a different way. It takes place in a world where the cities have moved to the ocean floor, and her descriptions were so vivid I felt claustrophobic even after I'd long since stopped reading. Another literary obsession is Dan Simmons. _Hyperion_ remains the best SF novel I have ever read, and while its successors weren't as good, it was still a great series. While I am far from a fan of the horror genre, Simmons' work is stellar. _Song Of Kali_ messed me up for *years*. I still don't think I'd ever be able to travel to India, after reading that. I've gotten into Neal Stephenson this year. Can't wait to read _Cryptonomicon_, but I think I'm going to have to wait until summer vacation for that one. :) I really didn't like the ending of _Snow Crash_, but the rest of it was interesting enough. I think my favorite of his so far is actually _Zodiac_. The other author whom I will buy in hardcover is Kate Elliott. She's stuck in the 5,000-page series morass, but damn, they're good. The _Jaran_ series was really, really great stuff, and her current alternate-Medieval fantasy series, _Crown of Stars_ is delivering as well. I just finished the second installment, _Prince Of Dogs_. The whole thing could comfortably be about half the length it is, but it's all enjoyable and everything appears to be leading up to something. The characterizations are really good. (Mike, you gave up on it too easily. :) Other faves: Charles DeLint, Jane Yolen, Esther Friesner (i.e. her rare forays into serious stuff, though her fluffy comedies are always good for a snicker), and of course Neil Gaiman. And while I always hesitate to mention it because I figure people aren't going to believe me, my sister Judith is no hack either. :) I wrote her a fan letter after reading her latest, _White Mare's Daughter_. It's one of only three books which I immediately turned back to page one after finishing the first time. Believe it or not, I don't read only SF and Fantasy ... I also quite like Jeanette Winterson and E.L. Doctorow, and I went through a serious Margaret Atwood phase a couple years back, though _The Handmaid's Tale_ got me off that pretty quick (gods, but how I HATED that book). dmw noted: >lucius shepherd - almost more of a magic realist than a fantasist per se, >there is a set of loosely interconnected stories of soldiers tormented by >drug-induced "psychic" powers that is some of the most biting criticism of >u.s. foreign policy i've ever encountered. but he's a very versatile >writer, more concerned with the people in the stories than the gimmicks >that make them sf Funny, I always think of Lucius more as a music reviewer than an author. He and I used to belong to the same music APA, and every issue would consist of a scad of pages in ancient dot-matrix ur-Mac default font going on and on about every facet of the Seattle grunge scene. It was brilliant. I'm almost embarrassed to say that I've never read any of his fiction. That's quite enough for now ... :) +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 May 1999 14:44:50 PDT From: "Nick Nadel" Subject: Beautiful Songs Hey, I'm making a mix of beautiful songs for a friend. Fans of Portishead, Lida Husik and Happy's MWABT - pay attention to this one! Portishead might be the closest reference but while they built their tunes around samples galore and spooky atmospherics, Lamb use more rhythm and occasional "real" instrument; in fact, some of my favourite moments on this record are those with very real, fat, thumping double bass (played by John Thorne) dominating electronic landscapes... On a couple of tracks a trumpet appears as well. Then there is Lou Rhodes' voice - yep, another talented Rhodes! Again, comparison with Portishead's Beth Gibbons would not be out of place. Husky, remarkable voice. Maybe not especially great or even pretty (well, that's a matter of taste), but distinct. For all the studio technology that surely went into making of this record it is totally down to earth and human. Usually misery produces better art than contentment, but "Fear of Fours" is an exception, as it seems based mostly around their relationship and domestic bliss (lucky them!). The opening lines provide a clear statement of the mission: There's so many things that we miss in our everyday lives we're so busy hustling, bustling, chasing faraway dreams we forget the little things like blue skies, green eyes and our baby growing.... I really like this album. Both thumbs way up! I also have to mention a program that seems to play a part in my current fascination with more electric sounds: PixelToy, "a visual plaything". It displays pretty patterns but it also has a mode where it can be coupled to the sound source and I find the results mesmerising. I can happily spend the 70-odd minutes it takes to get through "Fear of Fours" staring at the lines dancing on my screen... But you see, it doesn't work with just anything - acoustic music somehow doesn't seem appropriate, but Fear of Fours is just the thing. Or something like Perfume Tree. And of course, MWABT! "100 Years" is a natural for PixelToy treatment. (and yes, it's true - MWABT comes into its own when listened to through the headphones!) (If anyone feels like playing, PixelToy is freeware, and can be downloaded from But it only runs on PowerPC Mac) - ------------------------------------------------------ "If Bill Gates had a nickel for every time Windows crashed...
