I saw it in the theatre two years ago, and seized the first opportunity to rent a video copy and see it again. A very unusual film, a very remarkable film, with a brilliant lead performance. It's not a film about pathology, but about religious ecstasy. I believe the image of the > buffaloes was by David Wojnarowicz, and am guessing that that's > the one Corbijn directed. But I could be way off.... though i have never seen the video, the image of the buffaloes running off the cliff was made by artist DAVID WOJNAROWICZ. it is also the image that is used on the CD single cover. there has been a lot of press and attention given to DAVID's artwork, recently because of a major retrospective of his work that opened in NYC a couple of months ago. his stuff is quite excellent for what it is, though in truth, i prefer the quiet poetic-ness of FELIX TORRES-GONZALES work (another artist who died of AIDS) more than the in your face-ness of WOJNAROWICZ. though i probably shouldn't make snap judgements about WOJNAROWICZ, as i am not as familiar with his visual stuff as i should be (seen pieces, flipped through the catalogs, own some of his writing, but never really fully explored him, like i did with TORRES-GONZALES). Those who don't know FELIX TORRES-GONZALES check him out. beautiful, contemplative, utter brilliant work. challenging, complex, humorous, and deepluy moving. probably one of my all time favorite contemporary artists. i missed a chance to meet him back in 92-93ish, and now he is no longer around. *sigh* if you want more info about him and his work, email me, and i can tell you about it (i probably also have some scans of his work as well somewhere). erm. and since it wasn't mentioned, i do believe MADONNA did a song about AIDS. it was on her EROTICA album, but was never released as a single. i can't remember the title of it, but i remember lines about sitting on a park bench thinking of her friend who died and why do people hate people, for no reason other than they are different. something like that. also, while i am on a mainstream note, JANET JACKSON (who apparently is now going by just her first name...you know BUSTA RHYME featuring JANET) released the song TOGETHER AGAIN which is about her friend who died of AIDS. one of the more commercially successful songs that dealt with that subject matter (that and ONE by U2 are the only two that i can think of that actually charted in the billboard). oh yeah, and there was the AIDS musical ZERO PATIENT, but perhaps that doesn't count as much. whoops time for lunch. irvin ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 May 1999 20:33:31 -0400 From: Joseph Zitt Subject: Re: NYC Benefit show 5/9 Damn... Yoko & Thurston together, plus Glenn Brance? Now *that* should be an ear opener. Ah well, I'll be in Baltimore seeing Jaap Blonk. I wonder if they're Web casting it? Wasn't Seal's "Prayer For the Dying" also about AIDS? I'm pretty sure. And that was a commercially successful song. It's a beautiful song. That album has some really good songs (Kiss from a Rose, Dreaming In Metaphors) and some really bland stuff. But that's not the point, is it? JoAnn np: Susan McKeown _Bones_ I LOVE LOVE LOVE this album. I listen to it a lot. I recommend it to all my friends. Yes, absolutely: Great CD. One song just struck me that I don't think has been mentioned in this list yet, and charted quite well: Bruce Springsteen's "Streets of Philadelphia". ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 06 May 1999 00:55:28 -0400 From: HORTER!!!
