If anyone here has access to one, I would love to see it... Please get in touch with me if you can help. I have a mixed reaction to Gaiman's stuff--I love his imagination but I'm always left feeling that he could push just a little more and have something deeper, a little less adolescent-fantasy based. I've felt this way about the comics, the short stories, and the novels. They're so close to hitting mythology's connection with real life & emotions head on but for me just miss it. Just miss being classics. He doesn't reach the level of, say, Alan Garner's children's and Young Adult stuff. Or Charles deLint's _Memory & Dream_. Still, I like Gaiman a lot, so this feels like nitpicking. Did I miss something? Nope, that one never occurred to me either, and you're right, it _really_ should have...the "red ribbon" reference makes it hard to miss, yet apparently I did. Weird. I have a hard time seeing the inclusion of MoP in this list; the song mentions one or two people who died of AIDS, but that's not the theme of the song; the death of loved ones, is the theme, and yes, they're quite different things. One rather obvious song that's missing is Suzanne Vega's "Blood Makes Noise," though of course there are obviously plenty of others... jeff - -- |Jeffrey C. I guess I ought to say that my wife is the gallery manager for 153 west and thus I have a connection to it. But, this publication is for Karen, Charles Vess's wife. New from Green Man Press! On July 18, 1998, Karen Shaffer, wife of illustrator Charles Vess, was involved in a single car accident resulting in a severe spinal cord injury at the C6/C7 level. She was taken to the hospital and placed intraction. A delicate operation was performed. Initially paralyzed in all extremeties, she has worked with the excellent staff at UVA Healthsouth and Woodrow Wilson Rehabilitation Center to regain use of all her legs and arms. In December of 1998 she put her wheelchair in a closet. Her progress has surprised the medical staff, and Karen hopes to fully recover. This portfolio of Stardust interpretations was assembled to help Karen and Charles defray the continuing medical and adaptive living expenses as she regains strength, mobility and the fine motor skills most of us take for granted. This "showcase" performance was organised by Paradiso and her European record company BMG. Sarah performed 7 songs live, i.e.: Angel, Adia, Do what you have to do, Ice cream, Building a mystery, Possession and Gloomy Sunday. 4,5 and 7 were performed with guitar, the other ones on a grand piano. The stage set was very beautiful, with candles burning, but the rather industrial music before the concert didn't really help to build an intimate atmosphere. :) Although this concert was very short, I thought it was one of the better concerts I've ever seen, because of the near-perfect renditions of the songs and the way she introduced nearly every song. The interaction with the audience ("stay!"; "when's the Lilith Fair coming to Europe?") was absolutely marvellous. This way, we learned that Lilith will _not_ come to Europe this year, and it seems unlikely it will ever come here, since this year is the last Lilith happening. (And of course, she's planning a baby...) After the concert she took the time signing records and leaflets, and also posed for pictures with various members of the audience. I felt it was a little bewildering, after all, I can't see this kindof thing happening in America, where she's mega mega. One of the advantages of living in a country where she's not discovered by the general public, I guess.... Dutch readers will be interested to know that the concert may be broadcast on "Leidsekade live" this Saturday, May 8th (Radio 3). There's a chance that the whole concert will be broadcast, or a couple of songs. During this promotional tour Sarah's visiting Germany, Holland and France only. She will then return home! Then I would have really enjoyed it. Or, as Meredith noted, the focus had been more on "Trinity." I found her to be a fascinating character. Sure, it was >a great comic book of a movie that's lots of fun, especially if you enjoy >random shootings and things blowing up real good, but *complex*? Come on! I suppose it depends on your definition of "complex". There are literally hundreds of references to everything from books, movies, TV, to anime and comic books, to previous works of the directors and actors. There are literary references, biblical references, mythological references and philosophical references. There are double and triple meanings in dialog, there's an entire heirarchy and structure to every number shown in the movie, and even the colors in the film are used for very specific purposes. Everything has a "history" whether it's the names of the characters or the names of the streets. Even the Kung Fu in the movie has a colorful and valid history (the stances used are not only real martial arts, each stance is, for martial arts movie buffs, identified with individual Hong Kong actors. And by the way, Reeves, Moss, Fishburne and Weaving trained for 4 solid months with Hong Kong master Woo-ping Yuen and performed all their own martial arts). No one person is capable of catching all the references, which is why there have been over 5000 posts in the newsgroup rec.arts.movies.current-films in the month since the movie was released, and at least 2 FAQs in the works. The Wachowskis began working on the story and script many years before they even made their first film, _Bound_. It's stuffed with references and ideas, and the only thing simple about the film is the basic story concerning the Matrix. There are no plot holes. If anything *seemed* like a plot hole, either the person watching didn't "get" it, or it's something that will be in either the prequel or the sequel (the Wachowski Brothers planned this as a trilogy), and even then, one can come up with many different very logical explanations with a little thought. There's a reason for everything, from the window washers to the harp in the restaurant to the "kiss" to the Superman bit. There're even practical reasons for the characters wearing sunglasses! I'm not particularly smart, far from it, so I could be accused of letting the movie overly impress me, except for the fact that people with far higher IQs than me are utterly fascinated by and devoted to the film, and working hard to catalog all the references and ideas. And lest anyone think we're all loony and the Wachowski Brothers are laughing at us for seeing things that aren't there, they've said in many interviews, particularly the major story in Time magazine, that they *PUT* all these references and layers in the movie for people to catch and have fun with. And it is a fun movie too, on top of everything else. The Wachowskis have a wonderful sense of humor and that's reflected in so many places in the film. It's certainly not a comedy, but it's often very funny, intentionally so. I've seen it 7 times so far and I'm a piker. The movie is staying in the top one and two spots because fans are seeing it multiple times to catch, catalog and just plain enjoy. I'll see it many many many more times before it leaves the theater and be first in line when the DVD comes out. I can't *WAIT* to hear the commentary by the Wachowskis. (The Bound DVD has some wonderful commentary, so it's something they like doing.) The Matrix *is* a classic, it *is* unexpectedly complex, and it *is* a watershed movie. And, last but not least, Keanu was perfect in the movie. The Wachowskis respect him, and, after seeing it a few times and being able to study his specific (and often ridiculed) low-key technique, so do I. I can't do the e-mail thing right now, so if anyone has any questions about The Matrix, or comments about what I've written, please put it in Ecto, with a "Matrix" Subject Line. The movie has NOT opened in Great Britian and Europe yet, so *PLEASE* put "Spoilers" in the Subject Line if there are any. (Btw, Happy likes it and has seen it multiple times too.) I love Tori Amos very much, but always have a difficult time understanding exactly what she is trying to convey in her most of her lyrics. A song that I would like to mention here that is about AIDS is "There Was A Little Boy". The song is written by Kevin Gilbert, a highly underrated musician and lyricist IMHO, and is on the first Toy Matinee CD. It is a very heart wrenching and poignant song, both musically and lyrically. Here are the chorus lyrics: How can you expect a child to understand the sickness of a world whose eyes are blind? A world he cannot hope to conquer, insecurities that fester in his mind. No choice, no fault and no way out, no blame, no guilt, no friends, no cure, no crime. The dying man inside this little boy is questioning his once upon a time. This song, written in 1990, always gets to me. Billi and I have lost some friends to AIDS, as I'm sure many others on this list have. A lot of progress in AIDS research has been made in the last decade. Hopefully, there will be a cure soon! Take care, Bill M. n.p. The anticipation is exciting, but the actual event is even better. Many weeks ago I ordered Karen Matheson's The Dreaming Sea -- it's everything I was expecting, and more. The Dreaming Sea is now one of my desert island discs. I'm still newish to Ecto, so I don't know how much banter there's been about Capercaillie. Karen Matheson is the lead singer for Capercaillie, a wonderful Scottish band that blends acoustics, vocals, folk and a dash of pop and fusion into songs that goes way beyond traditional Celtic music. I've played Capercaillie for many a friend, and the usual reaction is "I didn't know I liked Celtic music." Capercaillie often innovates, incorporating African textures into their music, for example. The Dreaming Sea is Karen Matheson's first solo album. It has a traditional, folksy sound, with about half the songs in English, half in Gaelic. Some songs are melodic, others bouncy. Matheson's voice is the kind of voice that makes you feel as if you understand the Gaelic songs, even if you don't speak a word. Sean Connery said, "Karen Matheson has a throat that is surely touched by God." No kidding -- you can listen to her songs over and over again without growing tired. The Dreaming Sea is hard to find, at least in the US. I ordered mine from www.cdworld.com. It took a while, and it was pricey. You can also order The Dreaming Sea, and other Capercaillie CDs, from the Capercaillie web site, http://www.capercaillie.co.uk. There are sound clips at http://www.sol.co.uk/s/secretmusic/audio.htm. - --Bill n.p. The Dreaming Sea, of course! It seems to me that I saw or read an interview with Bono. The general feeling was that this song could be interpreted in many ways, but the intent (or maybe just the most popular interpretation) was that the song was from a son with AIDS to his father, who had not accepted the lifestyle of his son previously. Kind of a last ditch effort to say "Hey, you don't get another son...I'm it...and if you don't love me while you can, you won't have me to love when you need to." I remember at the time of the interview, I listened to the song and thought how I had never heard an attempt to reach out to someone put more intelligently or beautifully. mtc...Lisa ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 May 1999 19:17:18 EDT From: JavaHo@aol.com Subject: Re: Karen Matheson's The Dreaming Sea Bill mentions: << ...so I don't know how much banter there's been about Capercaillie. ... >> I like celtic music in general, and I have some Karen Matheson and Maire Brennan solo work in addition to their respective groups' work--Capercaillie and Clannad. A friend of mine made an observation after borrowing some of my discs, and I have to say I agree with her. Just wondering if others feel the same. I like the celtic songs, especially those sung in gaelic. I like the rhythmic work often set against a quick tempo (although Maire's "The Mighty One" is a nice slow rhythmic piece). Quite often, though, the songs sung in English, especially the slower-paced songs, sound like very mediocre pop. I wonder if those songs would be considered as good if they were taken out of the context of a celtic group and just released as a pop record. To me, it's acceptance by association. Unfortunately, many of the discs from each group (disclaimer...I have not heard entire catalogs from either artist) are peppered with these songs. I didn't really think much about it until my friend mentioned it, but when I make car tapes of these groups, I can easily get 3 or 4 discs on a tape by the time I'm done weeding out those songs. I do like well-done pop, but I really find these songs the worst kind of filler. Any thoughts? STARDUST and SMOKE AND MIRRORS were just released six-eight months ago, and are still around in hardback. usually new stuff doesn't come out until the old stuff is in paperback (about a year lag time). that is, unless you are JOYCE CAROL OATES, the one woman book of the month club. Keep in mind that STARDUST was first released as a three issue comic. Then it was collected into hardback, and now it's a novel. I hear the softcover is due soon (if it isn't already out). Plus, I think I read somewhere it's going to be made into a movie - at least the rights have been "sold" or such. He has done other "short story" comic work. There was a story in Oni a few months ago, and there was something else that I can't remember. Hmmm... Frankly I find most of the output from both Clannad (after Clannad 2) and Capercaillie to be too... umm... newagy (rhymes with sewagy?) and bland in general. Songs in "celtic" music done in English do tend to sound like bad pop songs, but in some cases that's what they are, bad pop songs done in some sort of "celtic" style. IMO, that's just a reflection of the shallow nature of the whole new age "celtic" genre, because there are many, many truly great songs from the various Celtic traditions that bear no resemblance to badly done pop when sung in English.
