Of course, I'm only up to ~500 CD's, after losing about 200 that I bought 1984-1989. :-( The reason I'm writing, is that I ignored EWS and bought myself some music this week, as well. XTC "Apple Venus Vol. I" From various purchases online, I also got Solas, "The Words That Remain" Meryn Cadell "Bombazine" Ensemble Galilei, "The Mystic and the Muse (Celebrating 600 years of Women in Music)" The Corrs, "Forgiven, Not Forgotten" Anonymous 4, "A Lammas Ladymass" *this is a gem! have you heard this, Neile?* Soundtrack to The Hanging Garden, (with Jane Siberry, Ani DiFranco, Mary Jane Lamond, Meryn Cadell w/ M2OH, AEther, and lots of great Celtic tunes, too. Great buy!) I have lots of listening ahead of me! This makes Mickey very happy. ;-) Best regards, - ---Mickey Austin TX USA > > Susan McKeown _Bones_. Can't complain too much though--it does help ward off EWS, and I can still take the occassional writing class (or actually do some writing--what a novel idea, and yes, pun is intended.) I think most of us on this list that spend a lot on CDs have learned the value of searching used shops. I managed to get 17 CDs the other day for a mere $17. Can't do that everyday, but it sure feels good when you can. Of course, I turned around the other day and placed a $114 order with amazon.com for a mere 6 or 7 CDs. It's all relative I guess. It's great to find used CDs, but there's a lot of new stuff, or hard-to-find stuff that you just got to break down and pay high prices for. I just wanted to clarify my last e-mail in case anyone has or does take it the wrong way. "How some of you managed to amass collections of 1000+ cd's I shudder to imagine. At roughly $15 a cd, that could cover a year of college at some schools, or at least a semester at many others." I didn't mean to suggest that having a lot of cd's was a bad thing, or that it was wasteful because the money could be spent on other things, like college educations. Nor did I mean to suggest that those of you with huge cd collections don't have college degrees. Both can obviously be accomplished by the same person. And whether one has attended any or graduated from college doesn't create a value judgment on that person in my eyes. Let me rephrase. I don't judge people on whether or not they have a college education. I'm interested in how people live their lives, are they good people? are they interesting? I think that the people here are among the most creative, interesting, and funny people I have *met*. What happened is that I binge-buy. I'll go periods where my spending is decent, then I'll go through periods where I shop, shop, shop and spend lots of money. I was walking back from dinner, and I thought, "I've bought 25 cd's between Thursday and now." And then I totalled that up, and I freaked out. So then I thought about people here who have so many more cd's, and I didn't even want to think about the cost of that. So it wasn't that I thought it was bad, just thinking of cost makes it scary. I related it to the cost of college education because it's easier for me to think of money in terms of concrete things. Like I think of $30 as 2 new cd's or 4 used ones. So, as a college student, it was natural to me to think of a sum of thousands of dollars in terms of the cost of college education. I hope this clears up any confusion or annoyance I may have caused.
