The hosts were David Sanborn (not Johanson, who was the punk/glam star later known as Buster Poindexter) and, in the first season, ... uh... a rather twee British pianist who tried too hard to be funny. 'no mermaid' leans towards pop, electronic with samples, electric guitars, and significant presence of drums. 'who do you think i am' has more of a country/acoustic/sweet feel to it. I purchased NO MERMAID just after sampling it at a listening station; there were enough good tunes in that album, actually enough "loves at first hearing", that I picked it up right away, and have had no regrets. In fact, track 2, "don't I know", has been one of my top favorite tunes ever since. The CDROM distribution of Microsoft Windows95 contained in the "extras" folder of the installation CDROM a video of Edie's "good times bad times", and here again, I was mesmerised enough by this video and tune to rush out and find the disc. At the time I had no clue who Edie Brickell was, but, as with Sinead Lohan, Edie's "good times bad times" tune has become one of my favorites. Some people that I have talked to who are familiar with Edie's earlier works seem to like the earlier work better, under the premise of "less pop, more rock"; but to me her later stuff is definately more ectoish, even if a bit more poppish that the earlier stuff. While there may be nothing that jumps out and knocks you down on first listen, it's certainly pleasant. I'd have to say that it's a "grows on you" disc, though. The songs, which are simple and unpretentious, become more individual with each listening. Her voice is soft and straightforward--no annoying affectations. While her "Irish" shows through in her singing, it's not Celtic in feel really. More like Sinead O'Connor's softer work, maybe? I find the disc lyrically intelligent, too. Not in an intellectual way, but she seems to have a way of saying things that makes you think she is an old soul. In a nutshell, there is nothing here that most would find annoying or offensive, but some have found it a bit tame. I usually live in Baltimore, so you should be fine in the DC temperatures. I never take the CD's out in the summer or winter, and the only time I've had any trouble at all was when the disc that was playing got scratched when I was rear-ended at high speeds on the highway to DC. I drove out to New Mexico at the tail end of last summer with several hundred CD's in my trunk (in plastic sleeves, not jewel boxes), and discs in the changer too. In Oklahoma, it was over 100 for a couple of days in a row. My bike rack melted onto my trunk. The plastic shell to my helmet warped (foolishly left on top of a box in the back seat). The cd's in the changer played fine throughout, looked fine when I got to New Mexico, and I haven't seen any damage on any of the other discs. I love Vonda's last album _It's Good, Eve_ so I have high hopes for this new album. The other two I know nothing about, and have never heard any of their music. I know someone mentioned Shelby here not too long ago, but I don't remember what was said. K's Choice is playing at Lilith Fair this year, but that's all I know about them. Also, how is the Cardigans _Gran Turismo_? I don't know why I'm asking, since I wasn't crazy about the single from the last time, nor was I that impressed when I saw them at Lilith Fair. I think the lead singer is really cute though.
