I've just ordered the Pamela Morgan/Anita Best CD, The Colour of Amber, and anxious await it. I've been a fan of Ecto music (without knowing what it's called) for quite some time, searching the planet for music that's, well, Ecto for lack of a better way of describing it. It's good to find others who like the same kind of music. Just after graduating college in '78 I went to Dublin, wandered into a record store where I saw a Clannad album. Hope any and all ectos in the bay area can come see us at the Prog Fest. In the meantime, the band most of you know about, LAND OF THE BLIND is very involved with EarthFirst/Headwaters fight. We have a song on our third cd called "CHURCH OF THE HOLY TREES", which I dedicated to Julia Butterfly and half of monies go to EarthFirst. The people that made the first movie about Julia and Luna are in the process of creating a second one. These locally made films get around the world and let folks know what is happening up close. BLIND is honored that they want to use our song in their new movie. (I understand lots of people wrote songs about Julia ala "oh let her be free, a woman in a tree..." type things and they were very very happy to hear an excellent interesting song about trees that is non-specific (and good I hope). This led to them asking BLIND to come up from SF and down from Portland (band in two states) and play this rave/party/benefit to raise funds for the movie. I know benefits, it is all grassroots and small. Everyone is poor and working their volenteer asses off. Our didgeridoo/sitar player had a great idea but we don't know how to go about it. Neither does the EarthFirst folks who are out of time and money. I thought of ecto and all you smart computer savy and big brains and so I ask for help from where I have recieved it before. Here is one idea we had to help them but do not know how to figure out how to do a live world wide video feed.In other words, if we can figure out how they do it, we could buy (for the week end and then return) a digital video camera, find out about the feed and telephone line, show the concert live around the world and ask for folks from around the world to help and donate funds for the movie about the fight. Rather than being a local fund raiser thing (ie; rent hall for $400, pay for sound for $500 and system, give bands gas money, buy a couple local ads for $100 and basically spend $1000 and make $1,200 for the cause, thus, $200 is the profit, as usual for most benefits with everyone working their ass off!!!) BLIND has fans all over the world and they are all into the EarthFirst/Headwaters fight and I think would love to see another live concert and help out. (We did a live world wide a year ago in Vancouver BC at MusicWest) So does anyone out there know anything about this stuff? Or know anyone that does? Please help if you can. ideas are always so very welcome in the DIY world, thanks, cyoakha big heart/small brain PO Box 198 Mill Valley, CA 94941 (415) 789-8139 lanblind@teleport.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Apr 1999 19:12:15 -0400 From: meredith Subject: Re: EWS? (From reel.com) The boxed set of Terry Gilliam's Brazil, long available exclusively on laserdisc, is finally coming to DVD in a three-DVD set with a scheduled street date of June 29. This is one DVD not to be missed. It includes both Terry Gilliam's 142-minute director's cut, as well as the 94-minute television cut that Gilliam opposed. Both versions feature audio commentaries - Gilliam's own on his cut and journalist David Morgan on the shorter version. The two cuts of Brazil with commentaries are far from all of the highlights of this Criterion edition. The DVD also contains a 30-minute behind-the-scenes documentary and an exclusive one-hour Criterion documentary by Jack Mathews on the history of the production. Oscar®-winning screenwriter Tom Stoppard and co-writer Charles McKeown cover the development of Brazil's script. Production designer Norman Garwood shows us his sets, and costume designer James Acheson displays his unique designs. The DVD includes storyboards, stills, the trailer, and a study of special effects. In addition, composer Michael Kamen talks about the origins of his score. With wit, stunning visuals, and marvelous performances from Jonathan Pryce, Robert De Niro, Bob Hoskins, Michael Palin, and Katherine Helmond, Brazil is truly Terry Gilliam's masterpiece. For most movies, even great movies, the number of extras on the Criterion Brazil DVD would be overkill. Providing they live up to their billing, though, the special features on the Brazil DVD should add insight and texture to the funny, richly imaginative alternative universe of Brazil. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Apr 1999 20:25:22 -0500 From: There is no spoon Subject: The Red Shoes (movie) on DVD Ballet and Technicolor buffs will be ecstatic that The Red Shoes is coming in a Criterion edition at the end of May. Ostensibly a melodrama about a dancer caught between the impresario who wishes to mold her into greatness and the composer who merely wants to love her, The Red Shoes, with its spectacular visuals and marvelous dance sequences, is so much more. The Criterion edition should be so much more, as well, with a new digital transfer supervised by cinematographer Jack Cardiff, an audio commentary featuring interviews with Cardiff, star Moira Shearer, composer Brian Easdale, and Martin Scorsese, and Scorsese's Red Shoes memorabilia, stills, and the theatrical trailer. Other bonuses on this disc include Jeremy Irons' reading excerpts from the film's novelization and Hans Christian Anderson's original fairy tale, and The Red Shoes Sketches, an animated film of The Red Shoes' painted storyboards. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Apr 1999 20:30:15 -0500 From: There is no spoon Subject: Kate on DVD, finally! (From reel.com) Kate Bush: The Line, The Cross, and The Curve Self-directed film debut of sensual, emotive singer adapts six songs from album "The Red Shoes." Lush, offbeat, surreal fantasy will captivate Bush/performance art fans; probably too bizarre for casual viewers. I just picked this up at Melissa Ferrick's Iron Horse show the other night (sigh ... I have SO much to report on ...). Good stuff, and a must for any Ferrick fan. It's a bit more, um, twangy than I'm used to from her, but I've only listened to it twice. :) So, in a word - take Mark up on his offer and snag this if you can! :) +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Apr 1999 21:34:06 -0000 From: "girl with curious hair" Subject: this is strange..... [ sinead o'connor ] Sinead O'Connor...a PRIEST!?! by Marcus Errico April 26, 1999, 4 p.m. PT We can safely assume that, at the ripe old age of 32, Sinéad O'Connor is in the midst of one doozy of a midlife crisis. The onetime popster known for yearning vocals on hits like "Nothing Compares 2 U" and "Mandinka" hasn't released an album since a 1997 best-of compilation. Instead, she most recently made headlines last month for a "non-suicide" attempt. Now, the woman who infamously shredded a pope photo on national TV, has--we're not making this up--been ordained as the first female priest in a Roman Catholic splinter group. She made the announcement Monday in a broadcast interview. "Anyone who knows me knows that what I have done makes perfect sense for me. I adore God and believe very much in the power of prayer," O'Connor said. The ordination was performed by Bishop Michael Cox of the Latin Tridentine Church. Cox is known in Ireland for performing phone-in confessions. Oh, we almost forgot: Sinéad is now going by the name Mother Bernadette Mary. She plans to commence her priestly doings in about six weeks, after she finishes studying with Cox. (She denies her ordination had anything to do with a $200,000 donation she gave the church.) O'Connor--whose colorful side-career as a Vatican annoyance includes supporting abortion, appearing as the Virgin Mary in the satirical film The Butcher Boy and, of course, tearing up a picture of Pope John Paul II during a 1992 Saturday Night Live appearance--says she's had a change of heart. "I do apologize for [ripping up the photo]. I am sorry I did that. It was a disrespectful thing to do," she said. "I have never even met the pope. I am sure he is a lovely man." Last month, O'Connor swallowed a handful of pills after losing custody of her 3-year-old daugther to an ex-lover. She said afterward, "It wasn't really a suicide attempt." ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V5 #148 **************************
