But first I should say that I'm more of a casual fan of David Sylvian, so I had no expectations when I bought the album, and the only other album of his I have is Secrets Of The Beehive. Chris Stack said: >DBOAC contains WAY too much use of Fender Rhodes electric piano. For me, >any is way too much. It shows up here in 4 or 5 (I think) songs. The Rhodes actually works for me in this context, but I like the Rhodes in other contexts as well. >There is also WAY too much standard drum kit in the rhythm section. There >are so many percussion options available now that (to my tastes) Ride >Cymbal=No Imagination Again, I actually like the standard drum kit. I suppose these are more "standard" arrangements than one might expect from David Sylvian, but a lot of emotion pours out of it, at least for my feeling, and that's what's hooked me. Like meth, I don't really know the titles of the songs or anything, but I've listened to the album several times and it's gotten under my skin. I can't really compare it to his other albums because I only have Secrets Of The Beehive, and I haven't really spent that much time with it. The thing about that album is that while I find the music really beautiful, somehow it manages to depress me by the end, especially if I'm by myself. Dead Bees On A Cake doesn't leave me that way, so I keep listening. So there you have it, an amateur Sylvianite's view...... Actually, the latest Tori remix, Jackie's strength is not half bad. I finally managed to convert one of my friends, who is mainly into happy dance music, to Tori thanks to that remix, and that is a merit by itself. But what I meant to ask: I heard that the US "remix" version of the Corrs "Talk on corners" has different artwork, that is, different from the UK "remix" version. So can anyone tell me if the US "Talk on corners" remxix edition has colour artwork or is the main colour blue, just like the UK version? Sorry about this question, I live for this kind of trivia.... ;-) Kind regards, Marcel Rijs marcel.rijs@konbib.nl (Mondays & Wednesdays) mrijs@nuffic.nl (Tuesdays & Fridays) mfgr@casema.net (Always) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Apr 1999 18:37:22 +0300 (EEST) From: Juha Sorva Subject: Re: Garmarna Hello, On Wed, 14 Apr 1999, Neile Graham wrote: > > Jeff Hanson asked: > >So how does the new Garmarna album compare with previous? > > I haven't had a chance to spend much time with it yet, but I love the new > one so far, and suspect it will become my favourite. Having spent a solid three weeks spent with the album now, I can say that it has become _my_ favorite. In my ears, there are a few awkward electronic moments on the album (including a really lame bridge that almost manages to mar the loveliest song on the disc), and I don't find the hectically thumping lead single to be all that brilliant, but overall this is Garmarna's most thoroughly excellent record. > Those of you who are interested in more stripped down traditional Swedish > music and who love Emma Hardelin's voice (she's also the lead singer for > Garmarna) should seek out the Traikel disc. I don't know exactly which Garms would be involved, though, or when they might be releasing something. Juha n.p. I've only listened to the disc a couple of times, and while there are a few songs I like, so far it hasn't really captivated me like 'Secrets of the Beehive' (that bee thing again!), or 'Gone to Earth'. Maybe it'll grow on me after a few more plays. On a side note, I first encountered Virginia Astley by way of a cameo appearance by David Sylvian. Virginia had an album out in '86 named 'Hope in a Darkened Heart', and there was a promo sticker (I was working in college radio then) on the lp that stated David was a featured vocalist on the album. Well, as it turns out, he only duetted with her on one song, 'Some Small Hope', but the rest of the album impressed me enough that I became a fan of hers, as well. Sadly, that album has long since gone out of print (courtesy of Geffen), and as far as I can tell, all of the rest of Virginia's albums, even on other labels, are now deleted, too. There was a brief reissue of some of her stuff on the 'Rosebud' label last year, but apparently they went defunct, and no other company has picked them up, that I'm aware of. About the only option for finding Virginia's music now is to go to 'GEMM' - www.gemm.com , which is basically a search engine for the inventory of large group of rare record dealers. You can enter the name of a artist you're interested in, and it'll give you a list of everything that's available from sometimes 10 (or more) different dealers. I found a copy of a Virginia Astley promo poster that way, and up 'till then, I didn't know any even existed ! Anyway, this was supposed to be about DBoaC, and now I'm completely off the track ! ...but be sure to check out GEMM if there's any rare or deleted stuff you've trying for to find for years, and don't know where else to look ! I would like to ask for your help in identifying an artist and song that I heard earlier today. Billi and I were at a restaurant this afternoon having a nice lunch. In the background they were playing a mix of interesting music. The song selection featured a number of women artists. One of the songs that I was able to make out was Sarah's "Possession". At any rate, I heard a very interesting song being played within the set of songs. I wasn't familiar with the song and I couldn't tell who the artist was. Amidst the conversation and bustle in the restaurant I was able to make out a few lines of lyrics (from the chorus I believe): "Falling into you. Falling like a star." (at least that is how I think it went). I'm not sure how I would describe the singing, I just know that I really liked what I could hear. BTW, there was also a cool sax solo in the song. Does anyone out there recognize who this artist and song might be based on my sketchy clues?!? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Bill M. n.p.
