It was great to hear her talk about how her career came about and how she approaches writing songs, performing, and looking at life. I think that she'd be a great teacher here at berklee...and i think she could do quite well on the lecture circuit too :) She said that she had a great time doing the workshop...she didn't have to do too much preparation and she had done some assistant teaching before at Temple while she was working on her degree there. susan revealed a lot of stuff that i'd never known, including stuff about the influences on her songwriting and performing. there was a good sized crowd that seemed very interested in what she had to say and it seemed like a lot of the people enjoyed her music. That made me so happy and relieved (i was of course fearing the worst - that no one would show up) and one of the staff who was in charge of videotaping the workshop (for the school's educational purposes) commented that the crowd response for susan was one of the best he'd ever seen. congrats should go out to kellie lin knott, the student here who basically made this thing happen. i think i should go to bed now Paul "the most important part is when you think it up" Kim ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Apr 1999 22:15:11 +1000 From: Andrew Fries Subject: was: Beth Orton. Hello all, I'm recovering from a system upgrade gone terribly wrong - to cut the long story short, it took me 4 days to get to the point where I can access my e-mail. Typing the long list of boring release info might be just what's needed for my frayed nerves :) In the meantime I got some new CDs: Beth Orton's Central Reservation is Beth going just where I wanted her to go (more folk, less hop). This record is doing pretty good business on the indie charts over here, so I'm hopeful we might get to see her live one of these days. Stretch Princess and Junkster come from the similar space. Geographically - Junkster are Irish, and Stretch Princess Welsh, I think. And musically - lite, shimmering pop in the vein of Sundays or Ivy. Junkster are probably the more interesting of the two; their sound is just more varied. Sometimes buzzing in a manner reminiscent of Sheer (and whatever happened to them?), sometimes more electronic, sometimes just pop. Stretch Princess CD on the other hand sort of just blends into one long, perfect tune. They can sound a lot like Sundays, but even more so like our local band of old called Whippersnappers. Not a meaningful comparison for most of you, but it explains their appeal to me. By the way of explanation, comparing someone to Whippersnappers is a high compliment in my books - over 5 years after they split up, they remain a standard by which I measure all things in the guitar-pop department. I recommend both very highly for lovers of things light and fluffy, shimmery and blessed with huge infectious hooks. But those looking for originality, depth and challenge might want to stay away. I've heard mandolin is easier to learn after playing guitar, which I also want to learn, but I'm pretty stuck on the mandolin. Does anyone play and/or have any advice? As far as I know, the mandolin is strung just like a violin. The guitar is usually strung in 4ths starting with a low E while a violin is strung in 5ths starting with a low G. There are several fiddle players here at berklee who double on mandolin. heck, you could probably just take a violin and start strumming it like a guitar and you've got your very own mandolin :) now, of course I could be totally wrong, but I think that I'm right. It was a gift, an old Martin with a crooked neck. :-P It *has* to be easier than guitar, since you only have four (doubled) strings to deal with instead of six; plus if you have small hands, the chords aren't such a stretch as they would be on guitar. It's tuned like a violin. I bought a couple books and taught myself enough to accompany my own singing, but I never got proficient enough to play melody on it. It's a lot smaller than a guitar, so easier to take places. :-) fleur ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Apr 1999 17:24:53 -0400 From: meredith Subject: woj-n-meth pnw roadshow Hi! I am SO excited. We've been talking about this for 3 years or so, and this year we're finally getting off our butts and doing it. I've never been that far west. We're flying into Seattle on Saturday, July 10 and back on Monday, July 19, after spending the previous weekend at the Vancouver Folk Festival (or at least, that's the plan and the reason for the timing of the trip). I checked their web site and they don't have any performer info, but I know that Veda Hille was a "definite maybe" the last time I checked. They always have a pretty cool lineup, so I'm sure it'll be great no matter what. So you PNW ectophiles might want to keep that span of time in mind, we'd love to meet as many of you as possible. Anyone with ideas of where to go/what to see in Seattle, Vancouver, and the spaces in between (we'll be renting a car to get to B.C.), please shoot them my way. It looks like we'll be crashing with Tamar in Seattle, but I still have to work something out for Vancouver, hopefully with an old high school friend I just caught up with again recently. What are the sleeves in CD wallets made out of? I know that those stick to the artwork side of CDs really bad, so much so that I had to throw away the 48-cd wallet I had in my car in favor of a hard-plastic version with little tray thingies you snap the disc onto. The wallet had a really nice impression of the monster on the _Equipoise_ CD when I was done with it. Also my business. The plastic bags they make now are much better than the ones they made twenty years ago but they are still have plasticizers, slip additives, surface coatings, antioxidants, acid-hydrolysis and other crap. It varies from manufactuer to manufacturer. There is a lot of hype about how they are now archival. But here is what I use as a guide...............they never say they are inert. Only mylar products have said that. All plastic from the moment it is touching an item is exchanging and/or absorbing chemicals with that item. Mylar does not. In the beginning of the card collecting hobby i read an article about the plastic pages that were used then. There were lawsuits against the manufactureres because the content of crap was so high that the cards were becoming flaccid, paper money was becoming clear, and coins were becoming pitted from the intereaction with the plastic pages. The few cards i put in pages at that time still are impregnated with that odor. Long term i guarantee that is not a good thing. But like i said the plastic has improved and there are other factors that affect the item being "protected" :temperature.......humidity..........lighting etc. I've stated before that collectors are usually very compulsive creatures and tend to over protect their loved items. I know i do. I literally have paper items that are worth thousands each that I would rather keep unbaged than use plastic. Fortunetely i have everything i own in mylites including over 5000 albums. I would never remove the cd from its hard plastic casing either. But again you do whatever makes you comfortable as a collector. I would only use a product that promises to be inert. fred ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Apr 1999 18:45:30 EDT From: FAMarcus@aol.com Subject: Re: polly wanna bag? Apparently it was some sort of side project for Anthony Koutsos of RHP, but can't find any leads on other work by Mary Redfield. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Apr 1999 22:48:55 -0600 From: neal copperman Subject: Re: Beloved, Miriam Stockley At 10:30 AM -0700 4/10/99, Rubber DeNiro wrote: >I just watched the Winfrey/Demme movie of Morrison's >_Beloved_ and saw Miriam Stockley's name in the >credits as "music contractor," but her name was not >included in the list of "featured singers." Then again, I didn't see Bernice Johnson Reagon, and I think she was involved in the music too. They do credit the various members of Sweet Honey in the Rock that they used to flesh out the crowd that sings outside of the house near the end. What did you think of Beloved Charlie? And did you read the book first? I saw the movie within days of finishing the book, which was interesting. neal np: Jazz Masters 13 - Anotnio Carlos Jobim nr: Memoirs of a Geisha - Arthur Golden Hell Passport - Kathleen Yearwood (Curiously enough, after using initials throughout, she slams Jane Siberry by name in the final attachment) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 Apr 1999 01:30:15 -0400 (EDT) From: joann.whetsell@oberlin.edu (JoAnn Whetsell) Subject: huh?
