MATADOR in the US plan on releasing a compilation of all the EPs sometime this summer. whether or not this will include all the songs from all the EPs is still up in the air, as the CD would clock in at around 74 minutes - which of course is technically possible, but artistically might not be the right decision as each EP is meant to be listened to as a separate unit, not as a compilation (okay this is my own opinion, but if i were working for MATADOR, i would watch this) BELLE AND SEBASTIAN are currently working on a new album and it will be preceded with a new ep sometime this summer/fall. for more information, feel free to his their official website http://www.belleandsebastian.co.uk which is pretty nicely done, and gives a nice overview of what they have released and what they are up to now irvin ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 06 Apr 1999 00:15:11 -0700 From: Irvin Lin Subject: APPLES IN STEREO even more catching up: WOJ said: > the apples in stereo -- tone soul evolution: twee 60s pop by a twee 90s > band. probably none of you would care (except maybe his feckless beastness). > i fully beg to differ. i think a lot of people would be interested in this band, if not for the sheer fact that they are part of the ELEPHANT 6 contigency and i do believe other bands that are E6 have been discussed here at length in the past (NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL and OLIVIA TREMOR CONTROL coming to mind) i personally keep on meaning to pick their stuff up, but i never get around to it. shame on me. in the meanwhile, has anyone listened to another ELEPHANT 6 band called BEULAH? my coworker has it, and i really am quite fond of it. sweet indiepop music with just enough noise to not making it saccarine. irvin ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 06 Apr 1999 00:17:24 -0700 From: Irvin Lin Subject: IDA anyone have the latest info on IDA? just wondering. i know they recently released an EP, which i have yet to pick up, on some unknown label (now that SIMPLE MACHINES isn't around anymore, i don't know where everyone on the label went). there was also a IDA RETSIN FAMILY album that has members of both bands collaborating. anyone have this and can tell me more about it? and i had heard that IDA had signed to a major label. any word on that? cheers thanks a lot irvin ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 07 Apr 1999 10:55:31 +0200 From: "Marcel Rijs" Subject: Happy in Europe! But I visited my local library Saturday and was VERY surprised to see Happy Rhodes among the new arrivals in the CD department. The CD was released by Gold Circle, and was slightly different in design: the hole on the front and back of the sleeve was not a hole, instead they printed the motif of page 3 on the place of the hole! It seems like this is Happy's first release outside of North America, and that is very exciting. I hope they will do some sort of promotion for the CD - especially magazines like Q (UK) and Oor (Holland) may well be interested in this sort of thing. I don't know if it's because, as irvin says, it's more commercial (commercial and Lisa Germano are two words that don't go together!) or just because it's lacking something, but she's still a fascinating artist. I know two things about him: he produced Yes' Union album in 1991 (and the band hated his work); and he also put out a great compilation in 1990 called "Requiem for the Americas" which was a pop-rock meets Native American music tribute. He's also done some commercial jingles. She'll be in Santa Fe next month, and I want to get my tix now, as I've been unable to get into her shows in the past. Anyone heard this yet? Neal np: ella fitzgerald sings the cole porter songbook A Pop Trend at Its Genesis? By Mark Jenkins Special to The Washington Post Wednesday, March 31, 1999; Page C05 Adolescent carnality rules the pop charts these days, but over on the classical side adult spirituality is the ticket. The commercial success of such "neo-mystical" composers as Arvo Part, Henryk-Mikolaj Gorecki and John Tavener has led major-label classical divisions to seek additional sacred music, sometimes from unlikely sources. Thus Sony Classical's recent release of two albums timed for Eastertide, "The Prayer Cycle" and "Abba Pater." One features Alanis Morissette, the other the pope. 'The Prayer Cycle' Jonathan Elias's "The Prayer Cycle" calls itself "a choral symphony in nine movements," but the emphasis is on neither chorus nor symphony but crossover appeal. The English Chamber Orchestra and Chorus are joined by pop stars like Morissette, James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt and Perry Farrell as well as world-music performers Salif Keita, Ofra Haza, Yungchen Lhamo and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (who died while the project was underway). These vocalists sing in a wide array of languages, including Latin, Urdu, Hebrew, Swahili, Italian, Tibetan and Wolof. Morissette alone uses English, French and Hungarian. As this eclectic cast suggests, the message is ecumenical. "We're nothing/ We're everything/ I am nothing/ Yet I am everybody," announces Morissette in the opening "Mercy," a bit of pop Buddhism that for some reason is sung in Hungarian. Some of these pieces will probably not please true believers of any particular creed. "A dark season/ Beyond the dying religions that/ Seduced us," warns Morissette (in French) in "Hope," and Elias generally seems more interested in nuclear issues than theological ones: "Compassion" deplores "weapons of blind science," "Innocence" finds mankind "close to ground zero," and "Forgiveness" ponders the ominous creatures that "lay awake waiting/ In smooth concrete beds/ Uranium fed." Elias previously wrote scores for such spiritual films as "9 1/2 Weeks," and parts of "The Prayer Cycle" will be heard in "The Century," which is billed as an "ABC Television Event." That seems apt, since this composition reduces the non-Western vocal styles of Khan, Keita and Haza--its most striking aspects--to the same level of exotic decoration as the Irish, Bulgarian or African music in certain car commercials. Morissette may be everybody, but "The Prayer Cycle" is predictable mock-classical Euro-pomp in which Asians and Africans play only bit parts. 'Abba Pater' While "The Prayer Cycle" seeks to blur cultural and religious boundaries, "Abba Pater" is meant for people who are dedicated to Pope John II and are therefore, most likely, Roman Catholics. Revering the pope is a venerable undertaking, but "Abba Pater" (whose title comprises the Aramaic and Latin words for "father") takes a newfangled approach. Composer Leonardo De Amicis (formerly the music director for an Italian pop star) took recordings of the pope speaking, chanting and singing (in Italian, Latin, English and other languages) and set them to music. Technologically, the music of De Amicis (and auxiliary composer Stefano Mainetti, who wrote the album's prettiest piece, "Dove C'e Amore, C'e Dio") is more up-to-date than Elias's. Although "Abba Pater" enlists orchestras, choirs and soprano Catharina Scharp, it also uses samples, synthesized tones and electronic beats. Still, there's nothing here that's likely to inflame the world's dance floors, even if substantially remixed. The music is a serviceable neoclassical-disco-worldbeat hybrid, but this is one case in which it's definitely the singer, not the song. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 7 Apr 1999 13:57:42 EDT From: FAMarcus@aol.com Subject: loreena mckennitt question i was under the impression there were only 3 cd's of hers available. i just found "elemental" the other day at best buy. the insert reads that there are 3 others that i was not aware of. parallel dreams a winter garden and to drive the cold winter away. i loved the book of secrets and the mask and mirror. would anyone have an opinion how the former mentioned albums compare to them. thanks.............fred ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 7 Apr 1999 11:27:25 -0700 (PDT) From: Michael Bowman Subject: Re: loreena mckennitt question On Wed, 7 Apr 1999 FAMarcus@aol.com wrote: > i was under the impression there were only 3 cd's of hers available. i just > found "elemental" the other day at best buy. the insert reads that there are > 3 others that i was not aware of. parallel dreams a winter garden > and to drive the cold winter away. i loved the book of secrets and the > mask and mirror. would anyone have an opinion how the former mentioned > albums compare to them. A Winter Garden is an EP, not a full album. Both it and To Drive the Cold Winter Away are seasonal albums. And one you didn't mention, The Visit, which was her breakthrough album in the US (and my favorite of hers). Parallel Dreams and Elemental are her first two and are both pretty traditional Celtic albums. I think To Drive the Cold Winter Away is her weakest album, on the whole. For other albums, there is a live ep available directly from Quinlan Road. There is also a live album (with 4 tracks more than the ep) that was only available as a promo. In addition, a two-CD live album will be released relatively soon from last year's tour. There is also a 30-60 minute tape of a show that was broadcast on PBS about her. IF you don't have The Visit, I would unquestionably buy that first. Then Parallel Dreams, the live EP and then TDTCWA and AWG. Michael Bowman bvmi@odin.cc.pdx.edu nr. Katherine Neville. If you like "Elemental," then you'll like "Parallel Dreams" and "To Drive the Cold Winter Away." All three of those CDs are very minimalistic production-wise, with an emphasis on traditional celtic songs and arrangements, and all three were obviously recorded on a shoestring budget. Like you, I'm a big fan of "Book of Secrets" and "Mask and Mirror" (as well as "The Visit," which you didn't mention), but still found things to enjoy about the first three releases as well (especially "Parallel Dreams") even though they *are* markedly different from her more recent work. As for "A Winter Garden," I'd *definitely* recommend it to you as it boasts a similar sound to her recent albums (as it should, since it came out after "Mask and Mirror"), provided you have no qualms with traditional Christmas music. Pass it up, and you'll never hear one of Loreena's best songs, "Snow." (Even though it's also on "To Drive the Cold Winter Away," the version on "A Winter Garden" is much better, IMHO.) So there you go. Bottom line, any true Loreena McKennitt fan will find much to like about any of her albums. Fans of only her more recent sound should stick to "The Visit" and everything released since. I saw an album I had been meaning to pick up: _Lux Vivens (Living Light) The Music of Hildegard von Bingen_ by Jocelyn Montgomery with David Lynch. I was expecting something sort of like his work with Julie Cruise (who was recently mention on here as wel?) and it sorta was, only different. I am still digesting it, but I am enjoying it very much. Sort of an ambient thing, only with voices. Dunno, it's hard to describe. The listening station did not do it justice, though. It takes time for it to develop. Also picked up Full of Secrets, a collection of critical essays on Lynch's Twin Peaks. Had that on the tip of my wallet for a while now. So the whole thing sorta goes round in circles. There's defintely a progression from each album to the next. They become richer and more layered as they get newer. There is also a live album (with 4 tracks more than the ep) that was only available as a promo. In addition, a two-CD live album will be released relatively soon from last year's tour. There is also a 30-60 minute tape of a show that was broadcast on PBS about her. >> Thank you all for your advice. I know i neglected to mention it but i did have the visit already. I love all celtic music whether it is traditional or mixed with western, eastern or in the case of Afrocelt Sound System, African influence. The insert for the Elemental CD had a card with this address..................http://www.quinlanroad.com When I go home from work I will try to visit this site. Does anyone know if that VHS tape is for sale at that site? Would a tower music have it?? How about in some of the malls where they have PBS stores. I think there is one at the Cherry Hill mall in south jersey. AND ALSO I hate to bring this up again but no-one answered me the last time I posted this question. I taped, off of public broadcasted television, the happy concert at the middle east in philly. I was told in no uncertain terms that happy did not want that distributed. She never told me that in our correspondence. So where did she say that? I never saw it in any of her fanzines. I can't see how the best recorded concert of happy's should not be distributed free or in a mutual trade to her fans. If she did say it........ what are her reason? The point here is what if, lets say, Tori was unhappy with one of her appearances on the David Letterman show. It was a public broadcasted show that was available to all her fans. I don't think she would care if her fans wanted copies of it, whether she liked her performance or not. And the fans that loved her would want it just because it was her. I think the same logic applies to Happys publicly broadcasted performance. I know i get a kick out of looking at it from time to time. fred anyone know why the letters are being posted twice all of a sudden??? ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 7 Apr 1999 18:03:49 -0500 From: "Mickey Ferguson" Subject: Re: loreena mckennitt question 'lo all, Talk of Loreena McKennitt brings me out of my shell every time. I own every CD *except* the Winter-flavored ones. A couple of weeks ago, I was gifted with the Green Linnett compilation "Celtic Voices" and discovered this new (to me) song that Patrick spoke about, "Snow". I agree: it is one of her best. I didn't know what I was missing! Looking at the liner notes from the compilation, they credit "Snow" from TDTCWA. I was wondering what are the differences between that version and the one on Winter Garden? Best regards, - ---Mickey Austin TX USA n.p. "Equipoise" (still obsessing) n.r. It was around the time the show was originally broadcast on Prism. The people who had been talking about Queen would probably be interested to know that Happy covered "Lily of the Valley" during at least one of her concerts. Another unrecorded cover was Peter Gabriel's "Here Comes The Flood". Needless to say, both of these were excellent. I can't remember any others that I've seen her do.
