The music comes across with a Sundays-like confection with arrangements that crosses paths with Ivy, Mazzy Star, and Starflyer59 -- who guitarist-husband, Jason Martin, fronts. Choice cuts include the Jesus & Mary Chain-tinged "Why Can't You Be" and "You're Wonderful," a seemingly perfect addition to any Badalementi/Cruise soundtrack. Album production is vintage Gene Eugene (Over the Rhine, Joy Electric). www.becrecordings.com Cecil Seaskull - whoever (teenage usa) I first saw Cecil perform without Nerdy Girl two years ago opening for Mary Lou Lord and was utterly underwhelmed by her new acoustic material. Since then, she's been playing occasionally around her new adopted hometown of LA at small cafes continuing to push her girlie acoustic punk. whoever doesn't exactly improve her music status but it's a definite improvement over any of Nerdy Girl's "accomplishments." Notable for having guest appearances by Hole's Melissa Auf Der Maur, Rancid's Tim Armstrong, and songwriter compatriot Rufus Wainwright, whoever brings on reminders of Kathleen Hannah and Juliana Hatfield that doesn't come across off nearly as well in live performance. Jaded - Jaded Kari Wuhrer - Shiny (Del-Fi) Two groups that if they weren't fronted by two TV personalities they actually might be taken seriously. Instead, Jaded (led by former "Family Ties" little sis' Tina Yothers) and Kari Wuhrer (former MTV VJ) will probably have to keep their ultrapop an LA novelty. Out of the two records, Shiny holds up the best with "Take Me Now" bringing on a 60's world peace Britpop feel. [I've actually seen both of them perform in front of some pretty big crowds and they're really not too bad.] www.kariwuhrer.org Ruby Diver - Super*Remote (Turftone) Led by the dominate figure/lead vocalist Miss Paula Helekunihi Duke (who sounds like a cross between Grace Slick and Morcheeba's Skye Edwards), Ruby Diver is one of the fastest rising bands in the ever-thriving Orange County music scene. And like most OC bands, their live shows are their strongest asset. Still, Super*Remote has some excellent representations of their soul/pop fusion like the trippy glide of "Mission To Mars" and the funk verve of "Big Light Grinning." This band will be an MTV magnet. www.rubydiver.com Moa - Universal (Tommy Boy) Bombastic cabaret would best describe this occasionally pleasing album. With Earth Kitt seemingly as her protege, singer Moa blends her fairylike voice with shimmering Eurocentric soundscape and pulsing breakbeat. Universal works best when being subtly evocative ("Memory Cloud") and not sounding like a spaceage porn soundtrack ("Virtual Affair"). www.tommyboy.com Shelby Starner - from in the shadows (WB) It seems any young prodigy who can sing and can play the piano is touted as the next Tori Amos or, these days, the next Fiona Apple. Being 15 (and lyrically sounding 15), it's going to take a few (dozen) more life lessons to make the songs on this record work but, still, she's almost assured a place in the hearts of Jewel, Bic Runga, and Apple fans. www.wbr.com/shelby Vonda Shepard - by 7:30 (Jacket) I've always considered Shepard to be one of the most overrated singer-songwriters in Los Angeles. And even though by 7:30 is her most ambitious album to date, she still leaves me saying why couldn't David E. Kelley have stumbled into one of Aimee Mann's Largo shows? Shepard does come out of her Carole King mold a bit with songs like "Sail On By," "Cross To Bear," "This Is Crazy Now," and "Baby, Don't You Break My Heart Slow," a lovely duet with The Indigo Girls Emily Saliers (who will be singing the song with Shepard on the 4/19 episode of "Ally McBeal".) by 7:30 is undoubtedly Shepard's best studio work, guided nicely by the sure hands of Mitchell Froom and Bob Clearmountain. [Despite my dislike for her music, she's still one of the nicest ladies I've ever worked with.] www.vesperalley.com Frogpond - Safe Ride Home (Columbia) The Missouri trio gets their Columbia Records debut with almost too typical pop/punk. The music hits its stride when the vocal harmonies are consistent with the riffhooks like in "How Would You Know" and "World Crash." Vocals from Heidi Phillips are occasionally (and purposely) dry and low-key but works in songs like the loner anthem "Empty Room." www.frogpond.net Sophie B. Hawkins - Timbre (Columbia) With often awkward arrangements that develop into uneven tangents, Timbre is a hard one to pinpoint in terms of Hawkins' direction. At one moment she drifts into sweet melancholy ("I Walk Alone"), then tribal dissonance ("The Darkest Childe"), then back to pretty pop ("Lose Your Way"). Perhaps her recent move to Los Angeles's "eclectic" Venice Beach has opened her senses to this new directionless direction. Regardless, Timbre is as unpredictable as Hawkins has ever been and it may take awhile to process if that's a good thing. www.sophiebhawkins.com Eleanor McEvoy - Snapshots (Columbia) Beautiful, clean compositions all the way through capturing McEvoy's keen songwriting talent like no album she has done before. Songs are painted lavishly with a synth-heavy, drum loopy finish. Nearly every song has a 12" feel (meaning possible remixes) with "Did You Tell Him?," "She Had It All" and my personal favorites, "To One Who Didn't Know You" and "Wrapping Me Up in Luxury" being pure pop pleasures. www.eleanormcevoy.net ETC. . . No comment on the Cranberries' Bury the Hatchet... Neile mentioned the Kate Rusby & Kathryn Roberts album. It's available domestically now on Compass Records (or it will be -- I have a promo). I like it... Snakefarm showcased a little while ago in Los Angeles at Luna Park and the songs were more memorable seen performed. UBL's got a contest for them going on now... I can't get myself to finish listening to the Penelope Houston album. She does rock out; kind of like Heather Nova on Siren. But this album just isn't for me... Tom Waits' Mule Variations is excellent, especially if you've liked/understood his past experimental works. His VH1 "Storytellers" show last Thursday just continued his mastery of storytelling, so to speak. Later on that night, The Latin Playboys and Lisa Germano rocked out together at the Hollywood Athletic Club, packed with an audience that included Sheryl Crow and Neil Finn. Artists soon to be Ecto favorites: Francesca Gregorini, Samantha Newark, Dudley, Amy Jo Johnson, Diane Izzo, Dido, and Anna Waronker -- who has some of the best material I've heard in the last year. When I read JoAnn's post, I immediately thought of Emily Bezar; but if JoAnn thinks LISA GERMANO is weird............ well. Actually, Bezar is not so much *weird* as she is *experimental*- it doen't hurt to have a grounding in 20th century atonal music when you listen and some of her piano work on _Grandmother's Tea Leaves_ is a real trip; I listened to the whole thing while driving across Missouri on I-40 on a Saturday two years ago and found that it did a great job of getting me in a mindframe for a Met Opera broadcast of Richard Strauss's overwhelming "Electra". Maybe I'm just losing my mind, but I think I just heard a version of Sarah McLachlan's "Good Enough" I didn't know was out there. It was on tonight's episode of Felicity (yeah, it was an old repeat, but I was a bit slow on the uptake with that show), during a really well-done scene between Felicity and Julie. "Good Enough" plays almost to its entirety, very prominently in the background. It sounded like there was a French horn or some other brass section added to the mix, and Camille Henderson's backing vocals were quite clear. I don't recall hearing this mix before, though admittedly I've been off Sarah for some time so I might just have forgotten. Anybody have any clues? Or is Jeffy going to jump up and slap me for forgetting that it was the version from the Freedom Sessions or something? :) The folks who pick the music for Felicity have very mainstream-ecto tastes. The episode closed with a Heather Nova tune (from _Siren_, but hey), and in other eps I've heard Peter Gabriel ("In Your Eyes") and even KaTe, as they rather egregiously misused "This Woman's Work", but it was amazing to hear anyway. +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY: the Veda Hille mailing list *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 07 Apr 1999 13:29:07 +1000 From: Sherlyn Koo Subject: FW: Falcon Ridge Folkfest compilation album Hey folks, This comes from the folk_music mailing list... - -sherlyn >Signature to release Falcon Ridge Folk Festival compilation > >Over the past 10 years, Falcon Ridge Folk Festival has >become one of the largest and most respected folk festivals >in America.
