At first I thought it was Jewel harmonizing with herself, and I thought, "Wow! She can make her voice so deep and mellow, like Ella Fitzgerald. Then I read the book and found out the main voice is her mother, Nedra Carroll! This woman has a stunning voice, and it's truly amazing how similar it sounds to her daughter's. I hope she does a record of her own sometime. This is a lullably Jewel's mother used to sing to her, and it's done completely a capella. Jewel's and Nedra's voice melt together like honey and molasses; their timing and harmony are flawless. I cannot get enough of this song. >> Hi all, This track which was included at Jewel's insistance as a kind of "bonus track" on her "Spirit" album was recorded using Nedra's live solo accapella performance at The Bearsville Theater in 1996 at "Jewelstock" (a private online fan invitational gig). They took Nedra's live solo performance & Jewel overdubbed harmony vocals on it during the "Spirit" sessions to create the track used on the album. It just so happens both Happy Rhodes & Keith B were at this gig. At the time, I had no idea who they were, but both were very friendly & even helped taking photos of Jewelstock crew & friends, while hanging out at the theater for Jewel & Patty Griffin's performances. What does this all mean, you ask? Admission is 5 dollars, unless you get a postcard at Tower Records which will get you in for free. I hope to be there. secondly, I saw a couple concerts last week. Go me. Joydrop played at the Axis club and admission was one dollar. I wasn't sure what to expect since I only had Steve Ito's few comments and some small reviews in boston publications to go on...they were loud. Very loud. I could barely make out what Sarah Slone was singing. There have been comparisons made to Garbage for them, but I didn't hear it...All I heard were guitar, bass, and drum with vocals trying to scream through. I should check out the sampler tape they gave out. I also saw Bliss last week. Bliss is mainly Donna DeLory on vocals and harmonium and Cameron Stone on backup vocals, guitar, and cello. Donna is best known for singing backup for Madonna (i believe she performed with her at this year's grammys) and Cameron has played with a buttload of groups including Poe, Guns and Roses, and John Williams. I thoroughly enjoyed the concert; i must admit that I was entranced by everything that Cameron did...he has so many cool guitar toys that he runs his cello through. They had a drummer and a bassist and Jay Bellerose, who is dating Donna, helping them out. Chris Snyder and I found out that the bassist, Mark Gorman, is dating Mary Arden Collins. On thursday, I saw Mary Jane Lamond again...wonderful as always, and it was great to see a friend of mine from berklee opening for her. My friend is a celtic fiddle champion in the States and she did a bunch of cape breton tunes with a guy who played guitar, bazouki, and bodhran (i believe he is a 5 time national champ on the bodhran, scarily enough). now, on to the jewel review response At 02:53 PM 4/4/99 -0800, Anna Elaine Pryde wrote: >This isn't to mean that I don't like the album. It's catchy and singable. as with most of her songs, this one takes on a much different life with a band than it does with just her and her guitar. This used to be one of my favorites to hear her perform because she usually did it without anyone else, and it wasn't just a pretty, catchy song, it was beautiful and heartfelt. >8. I think that for a while, this song was also known as Fragile Flame...definitely THE song that constantly hit me whenever i saw her live, especially when she introduced it explaining why she wrote it...personally, it's the lines "or outrun my skin and be pure wind" and the resulting climax of the phrase to the high note that sends shivers all over my body. It's a beautifully crafted and extremely touching song, and thank god Patrick Leonard didn't screw around with it. >13. Absence of Fear :) > Sweet and sad and simple- Jewel at her best. I remember being blown away by Nedra's performance of this song at Jewelstock. This and a duet they did of a song called the Face of Love. I have done all sorts of risky things in my life -- wheelchair racing, skiing -- but I don't hurt myself doing those; it's always some everyday thing that gets me. This time it was crossing the street. I hit something I never saw with my front wheels and found myself sprawled in the street with a broken leg. So the last couple of weeks have been a bit arduous. As broken bones go, this one has been uncomplicated and, all things considered, probably one of the least problematic bones to have broken for me. But it always takes time to adjust to the injury and the cast. Fortunately I'm not missing any real spring yet; the weather here has been cool and showery since spring officially started. Last Thursday I saw a poster for a Susan McKeown show at the WOW Hall (a local community-owned performance venue) for last Saturday. At first I wasn't sure if I would be up to going or not, but Friday I bought a ticket, and my leg behaved itself well enough that I was more than happy to go Saturday night. Susan's opener was local performer Mare Wakefield. I've seen her name go by on entertainment calendars but this was the first time I saw her perform. She has an excellent voice and her songs were well-written, tending towards autobiographical topics (but I suppose you could say that about a lot of performers). I can't say that I was completely wowed, but I think I will try to see her again. Apparently Mare was introduced to Susan when she was here last October, gave Susan one of her CDs, and Susan was impressed enough to offer her the opening spot for this show. Susan performed with the standard Chanting House lineup. The set list was very similar to the show she did here last October; the only new thing I remember hearing was a song from her _Mother_ album. She also brought Mare Wakefield out to duet with her on a song ("Like an Anchor"?) which was very nice. In her encore she and Lindsey Horner finished with their wonderful arrangement of "Blue Moon". If you ever do get a chance to speak with Susan, I highly recommend that you do. She is genuinely kind, gracious, and friendly. As it turned out she had sat down at one end of their merchandise table, right in front of the door to the ramp I would have to exit the building by, so I pretty much had no choice :-). I complimented Susan on how frequently she comes to this area, as Eugene isn't one of those places frequented by many Ecto-favorite artists. It probably doesn't hurt that two of the Chanting House people (the drummer, whose name I forget, is from Portland, and Lindsey Horner's father lives in Corvallis). And when I mentioned how I had attended her first performance in this area because of meth's glowing reviews, she was quite pleased and actually asked me if I was one of those "Ecto people". She's met and remembered quite a few of you -- besides meth and woj, of course, she mentioned meeting other Ecto folks like Jeff Wasilko, Neile Graham, and Neal Copperman (I hope I got the Neels right). And, meth, Susan specifically asked that I send you her love. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 Apr 1999 18:55:20 EDT From: Songbird22@aol.com Subject: Julia Darling in New York hey all, Julia will be playing in New York on April 9th at Brownies.
