Type in http://sarahslean.com download some soundbites and prepare to be blown away! I admit I'm a wee bit biased, but there are plenty of people here who will back me up. By the way for all you Sarah Slean fans out there, she'll be touring Western Canada this month with Oh Susanna. I know Suzie isn't very popular on this list but she is undeniably talented and she has a couple of less-twangy songs now that are genuinely good. I forget who all is within striking range of those shows: Neile, Art, and a few others, please go and support Sarah! This'll be her first extended tour far from home, so it'll be a big boost for her to have fans along the way. Great non-album songs to request: "High", "Elliot", "Ogoni Star", "Twin Moon", "Bonnie's Song", or her cover of Our Lady Peace's "Julia". Anyway here are the dates for the tour: Thurs April 8th Sault Ste. I downloaded some Sarah Slean clips once and wasn't that impressed. But I'll try it again and let you know later. Besides that, many thanks to the person who filled me in on the Lucy Kaplansky hidden track on "Flesh and Bone." I've had that album for years and just heard that song for the first time. Also, thanks for the Katell Keinig discussions. I just bought Jet yesterday, my first Katell. I think it's great, but have only listened to it once so far. Greg LoPiccolo, Eric Brosius, and Terri Brosius -- previously Terri Barous -- all ended up working at game developers Looking Glass Technologies, and fan site www.ttlg.com is currently putting up mpeg3 tracks from an abandoned concept album based around "Terra Nova." Four of eight tracks have been put up so far, and the latest one "Kiddie's First Band" isn't unlike a (short) instrumental Tribe track, but the ttlg maintainer describes it as "unique amongst the others, seeing as it's closer to rock," so this is probably as close as we'll get. You can hear Terri on track 2 but it's spoken, not sung. (It's also kinda fun to contrast Terri's gorgeous singing voice with the distorted results that Eric created for her Shodan in "System Shock" a few years ago... She's also Viktoria in the recent "Thief: The Dark Project.) www.mp3place.com is a good resource for mpeg3 stuff, if you needed a player. - -Philip, back from seeing Janet Roddick, Emma Paki, Charlotte Yates, and Karen Hunter play all-too-short sets at a local concert... np. People actually know what I'm talking about, and they respond to me and talk to me. (unlike the people at my school). So, long live ecto. Speaking of which, one of these days I will have to check out the namesake album Ecto. I'm not familiar with Happy Rhodes' work except for Warpaint which I don't particularly like. Anyway, my question is about Imogen Heap and Emma Townshend. I bought the albums yesterday after reading about them in the guide, but then I was feeling bad about spending so much money yesterday, so when I was re-reading today I thought maybe I wouldn't like Imogen. What's all this about "noise." I generally like softer, mellower music, but I like "harder" music too. The only thing I can think of is this, and I hope it makes sense. I like P J Harvey's "Rid of Me." I hated 4-Track Demos, or whatever that was called. So much noise. Is that the kind of noise you're talking about with Imogen? As for Emma Townshend, any more details on her? Is she fantastic, pretty good, okay? Is it an album for someone who has 50 cds, 100, 1000? I'm interested in getting into new artists right now, but I'm looking for people who are really original and different. (And as original as all ecto artists are, some are more stand-outish than others.) Otherwise I'll continue filling up my collection of artists I already have. Anyway, thanks in advance for all your help. Snakefarm consists of Anna Domino (vocals, accordian, guitar) and Michel Delory (additional guitars, keyboards, drum programming) doing a dozen or so very dark, traditional American ballads (includes St. James Infirmary, Frankie and Johnny, Tom Dooley, Rising Sun). I really like Anna Domino, but this is the last sort of music I ever thought I'd hear her perform. The arrangements are very hip, Euro, Anna Domino-ish. In fact some of the songs are only identifiable with the originals by their lyrics. Also notable is the photo of Anna Domino (at least I think it's Anna Domino) that could have been taken by Dorothea Lange. I haven't decided if I like the CD or not. I've been lucky to see David Bowie here once and in Toronto, Canada several years ago. I know we've had Sarah McLachlan, Tori Amos, and Paula Cole in Las Vegas (I seemed to have missed all of them). I was hoping to be a little sharper about live performances now, of course, after I've missed them. I am so glad to have found this list. It's just wonderful to hear about all the music everyone has discovered, and I've bought and ordered a few that I've heard mentioned. I was in such a slump because I couldn't find anything new to listen to, and music is so important to me like so many of you. I just bought a CD by Imogen Heap last night and a second CD by October Project. I haven't listened to them yet, but I wouldn't have even known who they were if it wasn't for this list. Thanks again! Some day I'll see some of these people live. Kristen ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 3 Apr 1999 13:46:08 -0800 (PST) From: John Drummond Subject: Imogen and Emma Okay, I'll address each girl separately. Imogen isn't noise. Well, not in the sense of "4-track demos", which is one of my favorite albums of all time... what most of the folks who posted on Imogen in the Guide were meaning is that there is lots of processed, electronic stuff going on in the songs... if you'll recall, somebody said they didn't like "throbbing bass" or something of the like... I personally don't find it noisy, I think it's just mildy-electronic. But, then, I listen to Diamanda Galas, so that might be saying something about my standards of noise. ;D Imogen plays piano very articulately, and she's touring with Rufus Wainwright right now... we've been talking about the various dates on the list recently, and her live shows reduce the songs to just her piano and voice, which is I think where most of their soul is located... the electronic stuff at times does take away from the songs, but it's easy enough to overlook, as the songs' strengths and her voice's power outshine the gloss of the production. She rocks, yo. Emma Townshend it the daughter of Pete Townshend, and I personally think she's more of a jazz artist than anything else. That's the way in which her piano playing leans... her songs have sort of obscure lyrics sometimes that often end up only coming together once looked at in the context of the printed words in the booklet, but she also has a bit of electronic processing to her album as well... it's not really anywhere near the kind of processing Imogen's album got, since Emma is an altogether different kind of songwriter. Her songs are less about dynamics and emotional surges like Imogen's, and more about moods and statements and, in a disconnected way, time. Her voice was described by somebody in the Guide as "dusty", and I'd agree with that... it's not a traditionally-pretty voice... hers is the voice of a witch who has just been given back her youth and beauty. She rocks too. I'd say both of them are definitely worth having, but I also already adore them... I'll admit Emma had to grow on me a bit, but I read a review of her album that proposed she is to be appreciated like fine wine, and I believe that now. I knew there was something incredible in there, I just had to dig a bit... Imogen knocked me over the head with her awesomeness right off the bat. If the two girls were mediaeval weapons, Imogen would be some kind of bludgeoning instrument, and Emma would be a thin little assassin's dagger. It's all about raw, in-your-face vibes vs. subtle, refined points. :D So there's my thoughts on the subject.
