It cost an unbelievable amount of money (if memory serves, $45), but she was trying to recoup the cost of making the videos, so I considered it a worthwhile donation. The collection includes: Boy (trailer) - a "commercial" for the album itself. Love Is Everything (trailer) - see above. This one is hilarious, especially if you've heard the story she told to accompany it onstage. An Angel Stepped Down - haunting video starring Holly Cole and the other backup singers ... very erotic Sail Across The Water - I think this is my all-time favorite Jane video. The imagery is stunning. It also stars backup singers. It's available now at the Sheeba web site, for quite a bit less cash: . >PS What do "np" and "nr" at the end of people's e-mails mean? One of their very best songs. Do all you S-K fans know about Cadallaca? (Have I mentioned them before?) Corin Tucker's side band, with a drummer and cheesy keyboard player. It's lighter and poppier (almost girlgroupish) than S-K, and a complete charmer. I've listened to it a lot. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 Apr 1999 19:20:22 -0800 From: Neile Graham Subject: Ectophiles' Guide stuff JoAnn wondered: > Also, how do you get an >artist on the list who isn't there yet? Basically, anyone who is on the ecto list is more than welcome to help me compile a page on any artist. Ambitious folk can do the whole thing (we have an HTML template to fill out with the basic info, and I have files of raw material of ecto's comments on artists), or can just fill out the basic stuff and I'll do the rest. You can also add to any existing entry by emailing me what you would like to add. I would also like to report that thanks to Mark Miazga we have a slew of new entries on the Guide site. We're nearly up to 300 entries now! Mark's efforts include new entries for: Jeff Buckley, Tracy Chapman, Maggie Estep, Melissa Ferrick, Brenda Kahn, Lisa Loeb, Mary Lou Lord, The Murmurs, Sinead O'Connor, Patti Rothberg, and Jill Sobule. Whew! (and thanks, Mark) Michael Colford recently gave us Do-Re-Mi, and Jessa gave us Booth and the Bad Angel, Gavin Friday, and Leila. Those are just the most recent things--other editors are busy behind the scenes Neal and Sherlyn especially right now). Hey, and all of you remember to send us a commentator's bio! If you don't want to fill in the form on the Guide's site, you can just email it to ectoguide@smoe.org. - --Neile (who hasn't yet done this herself) n.p. I know some people here do web pages or other design projects. Does anyone here have clip art CD-ROMs and possibly one from a Adobe subsidiary called Eye Wire? Because of licensing problems (I think they recently got bought out or spun off or something), they have had to pull their discs from sale and can't re-release them until they get totally re-packaged, and we need a particular image asap. The series is called _Circa:Art_, and the particular CD-ROM we're looking for is the Science and Medicine one. If anyone has this could you please let me know? We need it for a book cover, and because of EyeWire's delays (it was _supposed_ to be ready mid-March, then early April, and now late April) Jim's new chapbook of poems is being delayed. Access to this would be highly appreciated, or if anyone has any leads as to where we might be able to find a used copy (any place specialize in used CD-ROMS???) it would be greatly appreciated. JoAnn, Welcome to Ecto! I can't help you on Jane videos. I'm sure that you will get a few responses to your post though. N.P. means Now Playing. It is a subtle or maybe not so subtle way of telling the rest of the folks on the list what you are listening to whilst you type up a response or new post. N.R. means Now Reading. Neile Graham oversees the Ectophiles Guide along with the help and contribution of others Ectophiles on the list. I must compliment Neile on the outstanding and comprehensive job that she does! The Guide was very instrumental in me deciding to join this mailing list. It has been a great resource ever since that point for me. There are a number of ways to see an artist added to the Guide. I will let Neile and others explain the various ways for this to happen. I will say this much, Neile will sometimes use quotes written about artists by the Ectophiles that post here on Ecto. Since you really love Beth Orton, then write a post telling us about your feelings about her and her music. It is possible your comments may find their way onto the Guide somewhere down the line. From my understanding, this is how the Guide has evolved over the years. BTW, there are others here on Ecto that really like Beth Orton. I have seen her name mentioned a number of times over the last few months, so you have a number of kindred spirits here. I feel like I have been on the list for awhile now, but in reality it's only been about four months. One thing you may want to do that I found useful and interesting is reading the recent archives. These are available from the Ecto home page. If you are really ambitious and have the time, start at the beginning of the archives and read about the origins of the list. I found it fascinating reading. It's a pleasure to meet you and to read your post. It seemed like they were around the east coast a fair amount in the 1996 time frame, but I don't think I saw much of them after that. I saw them twice in '96, opening for October Project and disappear fear. Unfortunately, they didn't make much of an impression. They seemed nice enough, but on the bland side. I have a cassette sampler from that time frame that includes "trumansburg" and "i haven't been me" from the "forthcoming EMI release Once Blue". It is somewhat telling that I have this cassette with me in New Mexico, since I brought the pile of tapes that I hadn't really listened to. Almost 3 years later, let's see what it sounds like. Five minutes and thirty-eight seconds later... My impressions seem unchanged. Pleasant enough country-tinged folk-pop, but nothing that really grabs me. Less passionate, less catchy (less didactic) than disappear fear, but somewhat similar sound. Might appeal to Jonatha Brooke fans (the less rocking side of JB). neal np: Portishead - Portishead nr: Link: A Critical Journal on the Arts in Baltimore and the World (SUmmer, 1997, talk about timely reading) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 01 Apr 1999 22:36:25 PST From: "Scott H?"
