Speaking as an alum of a school that's churning out pop and ectophilic musicians by the heap (Brown: Lisa Loeb, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Duncan Sheik, Catie Curtis, Erin McKeown, among others...) I agree thoroughly. It's also, I admit, rather cool to see someone you just had an argument with in class opening for Dar Williams at a Campus auditorium. BTW, on that subject, I seem to remember that someone many moons ago (probably last spring, I'd guess) was looking for Lisa Loeb's stuff that she did at Brown. I may have the wrong list, though. She was in a band with her roommate called "Liz and Lisa"--if the person that was looking for those demos is still out there I may have a lead on a copy of them... On a completely unrelated note, and this gets back to Paul (I think it was Paul)'s comment about running into Happy at a restaurant. I discovered this evening while I was discussing the nature of goth with our costumes intern that she (the intern), happens to be the roommate of one Preston Klik, member of My Scarlet Life and formerly of Big Hat. I found that to be incredibly neat. One of the few local Chicago bands that I'm aware of and I'm working with one of the band member's roommate. (Grammar? Whatever...) How truly odd. Oh yes, and FWIW, neither "Jet" nor "O Seasons..." did much for me, they seemed too overwhelmingly Celtic which from my point of view is just not my fave. That wailing (possessed by a Native American Spirit, I think someone said) I found a little grating as well. Mind you, I do like a nice bit of Irish music now and then, especially considering the date...I did like "Leonor" though, more for its references to what I was studying when I first heard it (modern French dramatic literature...it was appropriate at the time...) and I personally enjoy "that monkey song" (Hestia). But then, I tend to listen more to the lyrics of a song than to the more melodic aspects of it. (Cy, I'd love to hear some of that spoken word stuff!) But enough rambling for the time being-- - --Kay np: Queen--The Unobtainable Royal Chronicles Vol. 1 (b-sides, demos, outtakes, alternate recordings. very fun.) nr: Morning Star, the next play in our season. - --------------------------------- On Tues, 16 Mar 1999, John Drummond wrote: Date: Tue, 16 Mar 1999 22:02:10 -0800 (PST) From: John Drummond Subject: Katell in New Haven Valerie, Katell lived in a house in New Haven? Most non-Dead fans have only heard their studio stuff. I must say, as an ardent fan, the Dead were not a studio band. There are a lot of bands that can only survive in the studio; the Dead barely survived their studio experiences. Also, the stuff that plays on most classic rock format stations is quite often not their good songs. Objectively, discounting whether you like the music or not, one can argue quite strongly that (at times) their performances on-stage approached genius. The whole "group-mind" thing, that is so accepted in jazz, is often discounted for the Dead. They drew from an incredible repertoire (they played at one time or another over 480 different songs, with 350+ of those play more than once), and they never had a set list, so they kinda moved from one song to another as the mood struck them. That said, though, even the most diehard Head could be brought to his/her knees by a bad concert, and they had many of them (the drugs were definitly a two-edged sword in more ways than one). If anyone is curious, I could put together a kind of sampler CD for you to try out. If you like it, I could send you more. Aw, come on. Everyone's doing it. What could it hurt? In years past there was a project where people could get tapes dubbed at cost, and this included some Happy concerts. And I'm sure Happy realizes that a number of her shows have been taped. I've never gotten the impression that she supports this, but I've also never heard, aside from Prism, that she specifically disapproved. I'm still baffled as to why she hates the prism tape, as it sounds better than any of the live audio tapes that are floating around. neal np: Nordan - Lena Willemark, Ale Moller ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Mar 1999 15:57:19 -0500 From: Valerie Kraemer Subject: Re: Katell in New Haven No, Katell didn't go to college at Yale. For those of you who don't know Toads, it is New Haven's large bar/music venue. It occasionally has great music, but you can faint from the stale beer fumes when you walk by it on a warm day. So here are a few additional words. When I got back from all that travelling with Cowboy Junkies early this February, I sat down over the course of a week or so and recorded a collection of solo piano pieces, songs without words that have been goin' round in my head for quite sometime. It's already been mastered, and we'll be making this CD available later this Spring. The quiet revolution continues … Over the Rhine on the other hand has so much new music. It's almost overwhelming. (That's why this concept of releasing a record for a big label every two or three years is a little puzzling.) There are currently four projects that are taking shape (from which we would draw material for a major label release) and we have a recording studio set up again here in the attic of the Grey Ghost which we are growing very fond of. So brace yourselves for more joyful turmoil. One way or another we're going to be getting some of this music into your hands even if I have to meet you somewhere with a handbag and a lantern. June 30 will find us either moving forward with a major label or beginning the process of releasing our own work. (Your votes and outcries and discerning admonitions and cheerleading routines have started pouring in. WOW. Thanks.) Our sincere apologies and thanks to the many, many people who have over the last months expressed their disappointment regarding our absence at The Emery and elsewhere this past December. We missed seeing you all so much. We had a rare opportunity to do some recording that we really couldn't pass up, and again, hopefully you can hear the results someday. (We are definitely planning a December Tour this year.) Finally, here are the trio dates reiterated. Tell some compatriots. We're mostly announcing these by E-Mail so they do have a bit of a secret quality. Well, if you have over 100 discs, my first suggestion is that you alphabetize them :) If you have no intention of doing that, than using these sleeves will probably (at least) triple the time it takes to find a disc (which I would imagine must be fairly considerable already). Though it is easy to hold on the order of 30 or 40 discs in your hand and flip through them when they are stored in a sleeve. neal np: The 20th Anniversary Collection from Green Linnet (my working celebration of Saint Patrick's day - though we did have a pizza party at lunch, and in New Mexico, the pizza's are typically pretty green, as they have a healthy(?) dose of green chili on them) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Mar 1999 20:15:31 -0500 From: Michael Curry Subject: Re: Sleater-Kinney At 08:59 PM 3/16/99 -0800, James mitchell wrote: >Last night I was off to grab tickets for the Chicago stop on the tour, >only to discover that the show was canceled. Luckily, I saw SK on the California leg of the tour in Los Angeles at the Roxy and at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco. They were awesome both nights! Here is a more detailed account if you are interested: Just thought I would update those who are concerned: We took Carrie to the doctor Monday, where she was x-rayed and determined to have re-injured her back during this tour. Her spine was ok, but the tendons she uses to play guitar so actively were frayed. The doctor ordered her to take a week or two lying down then begin physical therapy to rebuild the muscles. Fortunately they caught it in time, but if she had continued the tour she risked chronic back pain for the rest of her life. She is expected to make a full recovery, and will play at her full capacity once she has rested. The band were very upset for the fans and other bands coming to their shows, however Carrie's health was the obvious first priority. These are the first shows they have ever cancelled, so they took the decision very seriously. They immediately began working on rescheduling the dates for the east coast, which have probably been posted by now. As the long drives in the van were contributing to the injury, they are holding off on re-scheduling the mid-west until they get a better sense of how her recovery is going. As they toured the Mid-West in late 98, hopefully the fans will be understanding. They will do everything they can to play once it is safe. After the initial depression and sadness about ending the tour passed, things are going better. The weather here is beautifull. Friends in town and kids who drove in for Cibbo Matto's show last night have been very supportive. Carrie was in good spirits and is flying home today. Corin and Janet will stay in Athens for a little while, before heading home. Elliott Smith, Sam Coomes, Number 2, and Junior High will all be in town in a few days, so it is sort of like a mini-vacation with friends in the sun. The band Sarge, who were opening for SK at the 40 Watt tonight will still be playing, without Flin-Flon. If you are in the area, please go support them as they are a great band and may not have much of an audience tonight. Where I work, we all wear green and all for St. Patty's Day, but the real celebration comes 2 days later, the 19th, which is St. Joseph's Day. St. Joseph's Day, at least in Philly, is a big Italian celebration. It's a special day for my workplace because one of our folks brings in Termini cannolis and St. Joseph Day cakes. Nothing attracts a celebrant like food! The short answer is: We ain't got one. I, for one, am doing this in my spare time. I am also a firm believer in the concept that one can't really invent/create on a schedule. So don't worry. You have time. I think most subscribers of this forum would rather have you take your time and do your best than rush something out just to meet a deadline. Those who've sent me stuff already have obviously put much time and care into their work prior to even knowing about this compilation. Please do your best. We can wait. I'm not a record company. That being said, let me put on another hat and suggest that maybe we all try to get things together by, say, end of April. Earlier is, of course, better. If we get near that and you still need time, write me. Again, I think we all would be willing to wait for you to show us what you want to have us hear. Plus, we're all Kate fans, no? (OK, cheap shot, but you get the idea - I think we are a patient sort, most of us anyway).
