Heaven forbid you should LEAVE SOME EMPTY SPACES for future acquisitions? ;-) Okay. I have a medium-sized collection by ecto standards (~600, I think). I have two 200 towers, which are arranged largely by genre (one has ecto stuff plus Pixes/Pogues/Big Country/Matthew Sweet, and a few misc other things; this one is arranged into 3 stacks of ecto stuff, further broken down by either artist (KaTe/Happy/Sarah/Tori have one of 'em) or sub-type (folk, celtic, etc.). The other 200 tower has best-of's, prog rock (genesis/marillion/tull/floyd), classical, and soundtracks. I then have 4 other places that store music, none of which makes any sense (well, okay, most of the more heavily jewish stuff is in one place). To further scare you people, I'M A LIBRARIAN. Well, no, wait, I'm not. Mostly I'm a computer geek. But I do have a masters degree in library science. I'm supposed to grok all this classification stuff. But here's the thing: I only have ~600 discs. I know exactly where every single one of them is, despite my horribly fractured filing system...and I'd predict that my system would work FOR ME up to a 1-2k discs (not that that'll happen any time soon; it's taken 15+ years to get the first 600). We're not trying to arrange them so just anybody can find stuff. These are personal collections. Whatever works for the individual...works. As for limited space, well, put me in the group of people unwilling to ditch any album art, including the tray card. If I ever find a system that let's me keep the liner notes *and* the tray card, I'm all over it...but for now, I'll just let the CDs crowd out everything else. ;-) jeff np: just some crap on the radio; he's about to take apart his 'puter in the process of trying to make his bedroom clean. blech. - -- |Jeffrey C. The plastic sleeve idea is a great one, except that I too am fairly obsessive about keeping my CD's in their packaging with their art. It is the same thing that makes me not buy any videos whos boxes have been cut or damaged. Currenlty I use shelves that hold them all in a row and face out so all can see. It's nice to flaunt the collection, but it's no longer very convenient to me. I wouldn't mind putting them in a stack of small drawers that put then several rows deep, and be able to veiw them when I pull them out. Does anyone know of anything like this. I'm still interested in hearing more ideas. Also, about the videos. Currently, each shelf I have holds 350 or so. Making 1700 hard to handle. I'm interested in more ideas that people have for both videos and CD's. WHat size are some of your collections. Is 1700 the biggest, or are there people out there with more? Anyone with close to the same number? Well, keep the ideas flowing :) Ryan RavFlight@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Mar 1999 20:33:01 -0600 From: Carolyn Andre Subject: Re: Too many CD's At 08:56 PM 3/10/99 -0500, Jeffrey Burka wrote: > >This subject kills me. I'm another semi-anal type who keeps them alphabetically by musician (with EPs/singles grouped with the full length recordings), but separated into the classical & 'not classical'. I've turned a small closet into a combination book & CD room - and 4 foot lengths of board fit neatly between the front & back of the closet; so I use 6 x 1inch boards mounted to the wall with "L" braces. Theoretically expandable as far as the floor-to-ceiling will hold 1" + CD height + another 1 1/2" or so ... but somehow I still have ended up with CDs in a couple of file boxes on the floor ... If drawers are an option, that makes life a lot easier. I've seen small drawered units made of varying materials {from cheap plastic to slightly-more-expensive metal to nice wood}, and they're either stackable or would fit on a bookcase. The ones I've seen aren't made for CDs, but they have long drawers a little more wide than your average jewel case, and long enough to hold ~30 {assuming I can guestimate well}. Anyway, I've seen these at Home Depot and a newer place in town called Garden Ridge. /nad ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Mar 1999 19:53:04 -0800 From: Billi Mazur Subject: Re: Greetings from an Ecto-virgin Anna, Welcome to Ecto! I would like to offer a couple of possibilities for finding Happy's back catalog. The online dealer that Patrick refers to is Jack Sutton of Harmony Ridge Music. As Patrick stated, he may have depleted his stock. It still would be worth checking in with him to make sure. BTW, Jack is on the Ecto mailing list too. He is a really great guy. Anyway here is the URL: http://www.hrmusic.com If Jack is out of stock, you may want to try West Chester Books and Music (I think that is the correct name) in West Chester, PA. Someone here on Ecto very kindly suggested them to me when I was trying to complete my Happy collection. They have five stores in the PA and DE area. They all had some Happy CDs left. I ordered Rhodes I, Rhodes II and Ecto through them. They will do mail order and they accepted my VISA card. I spoke to a really nice gent named Jason. I believe (if I remember correctly) that their telephone number is 610-692-4090. I hope that this info helps you out in your quest. Happy's original AG recording are getting to be very scarse. BTW, The Keep is an *outstanding* CD, IMHO. Try and seek that out as well as Ecto. Best Regards, Bill BTW Patrick! I still owe you several responses. I promise that I will get to them. My proverbial plate has been very full lately. I really love your indepth Happy reviews. For some reason, not too long I was looking at some really old stuff in the ecto archives, and came across a post I have a vague recollection of making. Basically, it was, "I've got a fragment of melody stuck in my head and I have *no* idea what it is, but I know I own the album. And I really don't want to contemplate going through all my discs 'til I find it." Fortunately, I managed to figure it out without resorting to those drastic measures (it was a snippet if "Shine On You Crazy Diamond") jeff np: still the radio, but the 'puter is back together...so far, I've heard everything from Jewel to Pat Benatar (second time today?!) to Madonna to Six Pence None the Richer...imagine that, all those folks who've been discussed here at one time or another...) - -- |Jeffrey C. A number of people have come forward as being unwilling to throw away any album art (and really, why would you?). I just want to point out again that the sleeves that Neile mentioned are the length of the cd book and back insert laid next to each other. There is a slit near the middle so that the book goes in one side, the back insert in the other, and the cd (or two) in either side. The whole contraption then folds in half. You don't throw anything away, except the jewel box. I don't always throw the jewelbox away either. If the art and the jewelbox seem connected (remember David Byrne's Rei Momo? Negativeland's Free?), they stay in. Even if they come wrapped in those silly cardboard sleaves, like Elektra/Nonesuch likes to do, I leave them in jewelboxes. That's the sort of thing that gives my collection, in sleeves, stability. Neile - great idea taking the jewel boxes to the library!!! Finally, something good to do with them. neal np: Spine - Cordelia's Dad ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Mar 1999 21:20:41 -0700 From: neal copperman Subject: Re: Too many CD's At 10:54 PM -0500 3/10/99, Jeffrey Burka wrote: >np: still the radio, but the 'puter is back together...so far, I've >heard everything from Jewel to Pat Benatar (second time today?!) to >Madonna to Six Pence None the Richer...imagine that, all those >folks who've been discussed here at one time or another...) Here's my setup: 1. The "recent acquisitions" go in piles by my bed, where I can drop them into the CD player and listen as I go to sleep. I think "recent acquisitions" means "ever since I joined ecto 3 years ago." There's the "Happy Rhodes" pile (bigger than all the rest), the "Sarah etc." pile, the "Loreena 'n' celtic" pile, the "Autour de Lucie & Jane Siberry" pile (?), the "Cocteau Twins" pile, the "Mila Drumke & Susan McKeown" pile, the "Bel Canto & Cowboy Junkies" pile (!), the "KaTe" pile, and then 2 piles of pure miscellaneous. (Naturally, there's some miscellaneous stuff in with the other piles too.) 2. The stuff I'm listening to all the time these days goes in my backpack to take to work, or maybe on the couch if I decided to take something else to work today. 3. Then there's stacks of stuff on top of the bookcase, either purchased before three years ago or stuff I don't particularly like and want to get rid of. Four stacks of ten or fifteen each. 4. Then there are the two milk crates that make up my "official" CD library, classical in the one, everything else in the other, sorted by artist. (But since there are two rows, top and bottom, when there are gaps in the bottom one the top ones fall down into the bottom row, making the whole organization questionable.) The result is that I have no trouble finding anything--just don't let anyone in here to clean!! ;-) - --Paul ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Mar 1999 20:56:10 -0800 From: Neile Graham Subject: Re: Too many CD's Jeffrey Burka wrote: >As for limited space, well, put me in the group of people unwilling to >ditch any album art, including the tray card. All you get rid of is the plastic. Especially the broken plastic. The only album art I've ever ditched are stickers that won't come off the cellophane.
