They are all instrumental. So I'm thinking that if you >don't have this already Tim, you should start your quest. I do have Bastard Universe, but while I think its very impressive, I think you really have to be on drugs (like the band) to fully appreciate it. I've only managed to listen to it right through twice, after having the album for about four months. When I have listened to it though, it's been fantastic. A bit risky though - not even Yes went as far as to release an eighty minute instrumental. It was quite a surprize, and great timing as I was driving in the pouring rain semi-bummed about going to work, etc. Really changed the mood of things. After playing the HR song, Helen commented that Happy is a personal favorite of her's. After getting to work, I called XPN and thanked Helen (actually the intern answering the phone) for playing it and commented this is the kind of music us "card carrying" members of XPN love to hear.... Rich R. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Feb 1999 08:07:34 -0500 From: Steve I Subject: Rebecca Timmons, Jessica Weiser, Rayanne! Hiya 'philes... I'm co-organizing another songwriter showcase for my friends, ectophile Jessica Weiser and Rayanne Lepieszo. Last time we had another friend, Dylan White, as our third performer, but we wanted to mix the lineup a bit this time. I'd been long curious about what Rebecca Timmons was up to lately. Rebecca, another of a great crop of great Canadian singer-songwriter-pianists, was quite popular among ectophiles a few years ago, but lately she seemed to have dropped off the face of the earth, and consequently discussion of her here has dried up. I made a few inquiries and then before too long I found myself speaking to Rebecca on the phone! Turns out she's been keeping a low profile because of problems with her label and because she's in the midst of making her next CD (currently in the mixing stage). I told her about our little showcase, and she said she'd be happy to perform, as she hadn't played for awhile and was itching to play! Anyway I thought I'd tell you guys well in advance in case any of you wanted to come up and witness a rare performance (as far as I know, she's only played 2 songs live since mid-1996!). Toronto-area ectophiles will definitely want to see this one. We're calling it the second of the Northern Sounds Songwriter Showcase series and it's happening on Sat March 27 starting around 9pm at the Free Times Cafe in Toronto. An official announcement will come closer to the date. Steve ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Feb 1999 06:19:23 -0800 (PST) From: Rubber DeNiro Subject: Re: Falwell outs Tinky Winky!! Just in case you wanted to know this, Tom, I show that you posted this message at 12:40 a.m. Wednesday--just after midnight Tuesday--but I had not received it as of about 10:00 last night, Wednesday; nearly 24 hours later. I appreciate the post because I really wanted to see this, but fate intervened to have it reach me too late for me to catch the show. Did you see it? In this new album, lead singer/songwriter Kris Force examines the theme of tragic love. This = is an unusual song-cycle, in that it uses sound rather than lyrics to impa= rt the subject matter. Force?s high, crystalline soprano transforms the lyrics into piercing, chilly, near indecipherable notes. Her sonic pale= tte this time rests in the fertile ground between classical and dark-ambien= t music: accordian, cello, Force?s own violin and guitar-playing shares t= he stage with subliminal keyboard sound effects. At the same time, there = is something very theatrical about this cd, as if it were a soundtrack for= an as-yet un-filmed movie by the Brothers Quay. But they also have separate import-CD versions with no track listings on their site. My guess would be that they're all the same album, just being distributed by different labels for different parts of the world. If you ask me, the non-import version wasn't worth the $17 I spent to get it at Borders, except for the wonderful versions of "Welcome Christmas" and the second version of "Carol of the Bells."
