Thanks to Tim's raving reviews and a little egging on by Jeff Hanson when I visited him in Tempe, I picked up a copy of Hologram of Baal. While I may be impressionable for buying music, you can't do anything to make me listen to my new purchases promptly :) So I still haven't listened to it. I mention it only because, on a whim, I boughta special 2 CD import version. The second disc is called Bastard Universe and contains six tracks (Stage 1 through Stage 6). They are all instrumental. So I'm thinking that if you don't have this already Tim, you should start your quest. I've only given it a cursory listen and haven't digested it at all. neal np: something dancey and electronic on KUNM. I had to talk to the DJ since she wanted to know who Juan Tabo was (the name of a large local street). I actually spent weeks trying to figure this out when I moved here, finally talking to the local historian at the Albuquerque Museum, who told me that no one had any idea. Just going by the samples on their site they could've called themselves "Saturdays 11:59pm" :) The similarity is obvious, but it may not be such a bad thing since the Sundays themselves are hardly a prolific band ... Although with 3 CDs under their belt the Sundays are no match for our unsung local heroes Karma Zoo - they've been around for something like 6 years and just this week released their second EP! The disc is called "Tears Of Stone" and should not be missed. There are great songs from Sinead O' Connor, The Rankins, Joan Osborne, Natalie Merchant, Bonnie Raitt, and a fiddle tune from 3 ladies (among them Natalie MacMaster) that will knock you out. Other artist on the disc include Joni Mitchell, and The Coors. There are 12 songs in all and to me there's only two songs that I simply don't love, all the others are excellent. This disc should not be missed. Most songs are beautiful Irish ballads with the exception of 3 songs, one being the aforementioned fiddle tune. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Feb 1999 08:31:44 -0500 From: Paul Kim Subject: Re: Northampton & the Iron Horse all i have to say to richard is, maybe you'll "luck" out and get snowed in in the Pioneer Valley on thursday night/friday morning so that you HAVE to stay in the area and then you can have an excuse to see Susan Werner at the Iron Horse :) I know that I'm worrying that the upcoming storms that are about to hit MA might affect JeffW and my plans to make it to the show...as it stands, weather reports have rain and slight chances of light snow on thursday night, clear skies friday, and severe stormage on Saturday... I believe the name of her album is Been There. They played the first single, "Lost Count" in the Boston area quite a bit last fall. My boyfriend has the CD. It's pretty good. Michael n.p. Her album, Been There, has been out for a little bit now, I think... not sure of the exact release date, though. I picked it up because I really liked the song "Lost Count" that they were playing on the radio around here (Boston) now and then. Aside from that one song, though, I found the CD to be "pleasant, but forgettable" - it just didn't grow on me the way other albums have. It's not a bad album, by any means - I like Ebba's voice, and there's nothing that just inherently makes me dislike the music, it's just that most of the songs don't really grab my attention. To me, it's a very middle-of-the-road album... I don't hate it, but I don't love it, either. However, I should warn you to take this with a grain of salt - I often change my opinions on music when I go back and listen to CD's again after a few months... something I loved 3 months ago won't seem quite so wonderful... something I hated 3 months ago won't seem that bad when I listen to it a few months later... I haven't listened to Ebba's CD in a couple months, so maybe I'd think it was a lot better if I went back and listened to it a couple times this week.
