A few year ago I bought a CD off of one of those TV ads for music collections called "Mystic Music presents Groovin'". OK folks, please stop the laughter! ;-) Anyway, this one is a CD collection of primarily 60s one hit wonders. There are actually some pretty cool 60s hits on it. "Red Rubber Ball" is one of the songs on the collection. I will send a tape/postage if so... I was really impressed w/t this song, and the album version is so much different... The busyness derives from the fact that just because *we*, at some given longitude, aren't enjoying the warmth, joy, energy it brings, doesn't mean someone else isn't! It's really a fabulous piece. Oh, and Neal asked a while ago if anybody knew anything about the development of it. According to Happy (in TI), she did write it as a purely ambient piece, but always loved and used to sing along to it, so she finally decided that it was time to figure out what it was about and write some lyrics for it. (what I'm still unclear of is whether the track was re-recorded for MWABT, or if she just laid vocals on top of the AG piece. Close -- "Red Rubber Ball", the first hit written by a then-unknown Paul Simon, was a hit for the Cyrkle. I useta have the 45 too, though I found it in the 70s. n.p. Just to be confusing, An April March and April March are different. An April March is the one you have--they're an ethereal band from Canada that record for the Bedazzled label from the DC area. Sorry Jeff. I definitely am interested in the archives. I have been reading the very beginning archives from '91. I'm still trying to get to the part that tells me whether Happy plays a gig at Jessica's grandmother's place. :-) Thanks to Vickie pointing me in the right direction, I went back to read the beginnings of Ecto being born out of Gaffa. It was interesting to see how the exuberance of everyone towards Happy got to be an annoyance to many of the Gaffa crowd. Fortunately, Ecto came into existence because of that set of events. I can see that it may be slightly annoying to rehash discussions that have occurred not that long ago here in Ecto. I also get that you are asking someone specific to set up a searchable index for the archives to help all of us. In the meantime I want to sincerely thank you, as one of the key contributors that has been here since the birth of Ecto, for sharing your knowledge on some of these subjects. I have noticed a few posts from you expressing, what appears to be mild irritation, at discussion matter that has come up previously in the last 7-1/2 years. I say this strictly as an observation, not as a criticism. Since I really don't have a firm fix on your personality yet, I could be totally off base here. I for one, really do appreciate the insights that you and others who have been here for a while bring to the table. I hope that you enjoy sharing these insights with us. > > I would be interested to hear anyone's thoughts on what "The Chariot" > > I read it as a child who's dying, perhaps of a painfull illness? > Hating to be forced to stay and endure life, but at the same > time, scared of what's to come, she is at once torn between > begging to be noticed -- "How can you just turn away" -- and > worrying about what will happen in the world to come, wondering > if she, a child, will be able to handle it -- "I hope that you'll > notice how I don't glow like you" > > Lyrically, I find it rather gut wrenching ("I know there's life beyond > this black embrace") but as with so many of Happy's earlier work, > it's hidden in this utterly gorgeous music. Thank you Jeff for your thoughts on the lyrics of this incredible piece. I totally agree with your statement about the gut wrenching lyrics and utterly gorgeous music on the "The Chariot". It is definitely my favorite piece on MW. I find this song to really tug at my heart and I can't explain exactly why. It sends a shiver up my spine and brings tears to my eyes each time that I hear it, in the same way that "Little Earth" from HOL does. I know the music touches me deeply. However, something about the lyric gets to me as well. For some reason, I got the impression it was discussing an alien abduction of a child. I don't have the lyrics here with me tonight to review again because I left MW at work. But that was the hit I got from the lyrics. > > and "RA Is A Busy God" are about. > > This one's rather more straightforward; it's an homage to the sun.
