A truly sad moment. I did manage to get Ambient 1 from them earlier this week, but I went back and the second volume wasn't there. Sigh. And while we're on the subject of truly depressing things, I saw mentioned in the last digest about Lotus Notes using REM's Superman (covered by someone...) in their latest idiot box commercial. In that commercial, you can spot a friend of mine (and alum of my college) dressed up like a Middle-Eastern person (he isn't really), holding up one of those signs that says "I am." It's a greedy scheme thought up by Circuit City and a bunch of Hollywood entertainment lawyers, and they'll get the lion's share of the money from it. Other electronic stores and video rental places have no reason to carry DIVX machines or DIVX flicks, because they'd only be helping their competition by putting money in Circuit City's pockets. I can't wait to see DIVX go down in flames, which it almost certainly will. We're doing our part by buying bunches of DVDs (just the other day we bought "Dark City," "Amadeus," "All The President's Men," "Zero Effect" and "Bullitt" bringing our total up to about 50 DVDs) and renting them from the corner store and Hollywood Video as often as we can. I've also joined the Columbia House DVD Club. When (not "if") DIVX goes under, what are you going to do with those discs you have? I suppose they will go to the landfill to rot. Oh right, they don't rot, do they? Hmmm, Christmas ornaments? At least you can play your DVD of "Tomorrow Never Dies" on any DVD machine, anywhere, anytime, any place. And, Fred? Some of us care about this issue. What's the problem? I care that if American consumers are ignorant enough to embrace DIVX, the concept will infect the CD industry. Can you imagine buying a Happy CD, being able to listen to it unlimited times for 48 hours, but then, have to pay everytime you listen to it after that? That's an extreme example, but wouldn't the record companies love it and don't think they wouldn't try it. "He Will Come" / "The Flight" are a diptych, and in fact, Happy's only official t-shirt features a "verse" on the back which is a blend of lines from both songs. The front of the shirt has the drawing of a dove with bat wings (isn't that sketch in the _Equipoise_ liner notes?) > Also, has Happy ever disclosed the inspiration behind other songs > on this album? "Out Like a Lamb" was written after the death of Happy's father and is a tribute to him (see? you knew there had to be a reason for that elegaic bagpipe at the end...). "Cohabitants," as I recall, was discussed in an interview in Rhodeways/Terra Incognita (the sadly defunct fanzine), and I think Happy said it was just from an idea she'd had for a short story, and not inspired by any particular outside force. jeff np: FTE, Sarah McLachlan ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 Feb 1999 09:27:14 -0500 From: rich.rapp@effem.com Subject: Re: MWABT sighting Glad to hear Happy's in the listening posts at Borders. OK, this is based on rather vague memory, it's been years since I've heard / read about this. But this is what I remember: It was found, early in the CD age, that CDs did indeed oxidize and start withering after about 5 years. To deal with this problem, CD manufacturers started making CDs with a better coating that protects the CD from the air. CDs with this coating can last indefinitely, until the coating is breached and then after about 5 years they may start to die. I don't remember when this was, but it was the mid or late 80s sometime. I doubt many people here have a lot of CDs that were pressed before the new coating came into use. So, your CDs should be safe if you take care of them. If they get scratched, it may create leaks in the coating that allow air to come into contact with the disc, and then the CD will not last. Also, I've heard that writing on the CD itself with permanent marker can also break down the coating. Even if you write on the top/label side of the disc. -- Cos (Ofer Inbar) -- cos@leftbank.com cos@cs.brandeis.edu All genre ethnic diversity... 24 hours/day, 365 days/year programming... True. It's not clear to me which types of marking pens do this, but at least some of them will dissolve the extremely thin top coating on the CD. And, BTW, since the artwork/top coating is thinner and therefore closer to the aluminum substrate than the lower (play) surface, solvents and scratches on the top are much more likely to damage the disc than if they were applied to the lower surface. There are "CD-safe" pens for writing on CDRs and regular CDs, but I am reluctant to recommend a particular brand without some confirmation other than the word-of-mouth I have acquired locally. :-) - -- | Greg Dunn | "god money's not looking for the | | gregdunn@indy.net | cure. god money's not concerned | | GregDunn@aol.com | with the sick among the pure." | | http://www.indy.net/~gregdunn/ | Trent Reznor | ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 08 Feb 1999 19:06:46 -0800 From: Bill Mazur Subject: Re: Newbie question regarding "Equipoise" > Hello all... > > As I stated in my message last week, I'm brand new to Happy's > music... and I have a question or two about "Equipoise," and was hoping > someone could enlighten me. I used to have that 45 (note for under-30's: a "45" means a 7" :)) - in fact I'm sure I still have it stored in a box somewhere, with about 200 other 45s that might be worth money if I'd kept them in decent condition. My turntable broke years ago and I haven't bothered to get it fixed, so I haven't listened to them for a long time. Their worst offense for me is the exclusion of letterbox. It's important for me to see a film in its original aspect ratio. I was OK with Pan and Scan (the process of selecting the part of the frame that fits into the television screen) until I saw Henson's The Dark Crystal in letterbox, and realized how much I was missing. Films like Braveheart and Little Buddha were also much more impressive, but I digress. The point is, for some of us DIVX is way too limited. Compared to what DVD is capable of providing, DIVX just doesn't have the chops. My brother has been keeping me informed on this whole controversy for the past few months. It has been raging in other parts of the net. It definitely takes on the tone of religious fervor. I do agree with Suzanne though that, on the whole, the discussion has been relatively level-headed. I too appreciate hearing both sides of the debate. I think that Jim did make some valid points. I don't necessarily agree with them, but his points do have merit. I will state that I am in the DVD camp for several of the reasons that Vickie and others have stated: 1) I don't want to see CDs or other media be marketed in this same manner. I don't like the precedent it sets. 2) I would prefer to know what I'm watching is not being monitored by some company that wants to market to me based on my taste in movies. It's my own business to let people that I choose to know what my tastes might be. I don't want to have it extracted from me in this manner. I am already inundated with junk mail as it is. 3) The recycling issue. One reason I like Ecto so much is because of this credo: Basically, nothing is off-topic here except for flames (long-time members can still count on one hand the number of flamewars that have occurred on the list in the past 7 years), and the list maintains one of the highest signal-to-noise ratios on the Net. I honestly don't think this has escalated into a flame war yet. What do you all think? One last thing: I don't think that Fred was serious with his statement, but I could be wrong.
