Saw a couple of good shows on the weekend, Friday featured one of my longtime favourite local bands, Red Autumn Fall. James Dean-ish lead singer Simeon Ross was captivating as usual. Opening for them was one of the best new indiepop bands I've ever seen and one of my best discoveries of 1998, Starling. Not featuring any female vocals at all they probably wouldn't particularly qualify as ectoish, but I recommend them to you all the same. Saturday night was the Toronto stop of the Sarah Harmer/Oh Susanna/Sarah Slean show (dubbed the "Sarah Oh Sarah" show by Oh Susanna, Suzie Ungerlieder). The venue whose official capacity is 100 bodies already had 130 people jammed in by 9:30pm, which is absolutely unheard of in Toronto... usually the bulk of the crowd in Toronto (myself included) wanders in around 11pm at shows. Suzie went on first, and with the first two songs she utterly shocked me by playing songs I really liked. Could this be the country artist who bored me first on Veda's tour and then on the Scrappy Bitch tour? There was not a hint of country in those first two terrific songs. After that though she settled into that familiar old boring western twang and reaffirmed my distaste for her music. One highlight of her show though was bringing up Sarah Slean to accompany her on one of her songs. The huge audience was extremely quiet and attentive throughout. Sarah Slean was next. I don't often see her do solo shows anymore, most of her shows in Toronto these days are big productions with a band and a string section, but she very ably proved that she can still perform a mesmerizing set by herself. She opened her set with a great new song she'd finished writing backstage 20 minutes before, which is a pretty gutsy way to open a set. I had some friends drive up from New York for the show and I frequently glanced over to see the wonder and amazement shining in their eyes... I love watching people see Sarah play for the first time. The only songs she played from _Universe_ were "Me and Jerome" and "John the 23rd". At the end, she singled me out to ask me whether she should play "Universe" or "Ogoni Star" and I chose the latter, one of my favourites and one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. I was afraid that people might start talking during her set because no one past the first few rows could see Sarah at all, since everyone was standing and she was sitting on a stool. I needn't have worried, I could barely hear a peep her entire set from the well-beyond-capacity crowd. Sarah Harmer, from Weeping Tile, ended off the show with a set that showed an astonishing amount of country influence. I'd heard that she had a lot of background as a country artist and that Weeping Tile actually took her away from her country roots, but somehow I remained surprised. I still enjoyed her set but not nearly as much as I thought I would. Throughout her set she only did 2 or 3 Weeping Tile songs. In Lilith-ey fashion she closed the show by bringing out Sarah Slean and Oh Susanna for a song, and it was clear that they were having a blast playing together. Later on Sarah's manager would tell me that it was the first time during this tour (it was the third last date of the tour) they played on each other's songs, and that she had no idea it was going to happen. The whole show the audience was dead quiet, despite the fact that it was fairly obvious that most of the people there were Weeping Tile fans. The strongest reaction from the crowd predictably came during the Weeping Tile songs. It was good to see such a great crowd. Incidentally, Sarah has now played with two of the three Scrappy Bitches (Suzie and Kinnie). Can Veda be far behind? - ------- Anyway since I didn't earlier, I'll close this post with a brief look at my favourite CDs from 1998, in no particular order: Sarah Slean, Universe: What can I say, Sarah rocks my world. It was great to get a studio recording of "John the 23rd". A highlight of 1998 was that Sarah finally got signed by Atlantic Records and became a label-mate with Tori Amos. Emm Gryner, Public: a great album by one of the coolest people I know. "Acid" is one of my all-time favourite songs, and Emm is one of my all-time favourite people. Last year, a friend and I organized a showcase of some unknown singer-songwriters (including ex-ectophile Jessica Weiser), and out of the goodness of her heart Emm came and did sound tech duties for us... how many big-label artists will do something like that? Tori Amos, Choirgirl Hotel: wow wow wow! Wish I could have afforded to see her on this tour. "Raspberry Swirl" -- sexiest dance song I know. Rufus Wainwright, Rufus Wainwright: the voice, the lyrics, the passion... Imogen Heap, I Megaphone: I know that the production on this album turns a lot of people off, but in my opinion it is friggin brilliant. Thanks to Neile and everyone who pushed her here on ecto, I never would have discovered her otherwise. Starling: canindiepop discovery of the year. The artists who get my "why the *heck* didn't I pick up their CDs earlier?" awards are Susan Werner (thanks Jeff!) and Tom Waits. Disappointments of the year: Jewel, Hands: What did she *do* to "Deep Water"? It used to be one of my very favourite Jewel songs... I still haven't bought this CD. Heather Nova, Siren: Milla, ???: It did come out last year, right? I remember listening to the soundbites and being profoundly disappointed. Most anticipated albums of 1999: Sarah Slean: I've heard some advance tracks and they're absolutely gorgeous. One of them is on Sarah's website at sarahslean.com. The revised target date for the release of her album is the end of March. Kevin Fox: long overdue debut album! Tix go on sale tomorrow for a Rufus Wainwright/Imogen Heap show in Toronto. Sarah Slean has apparently been added to a Moxy Fruvous benefit concert also featuring Susan Werner. Life is good! HUNGER though sounds rather interesting. i had thought, though, that BRENDA wasn't recording solo stuff anymore, and was in a band? maybe i was mistaken....but i had thought that she was going to release something else under a different name....anyone have a clue as to what i am talking about? other thoughts > New Ani: The most disappointing Ani I've ever heard. Phenomenol live show (best concert of 1998). i have been meaning to post about this album. there really hasn't been talk about the new JULIANA HATFIELD album, but i ABSOLUTELY love it. it might help that i have the japanese version (with the DO NOT DISTURB ep and two extra bonus tracks stuck on the end). but the last three songs on the BED album (track 8, 9 and 10) make a fantastic ending/arc to the album. BAD DAY being track 9, the middle song in the arc. HIGHLY recommended for those who love JULIANA HATFIELD. probably some of the best work she has done since the BLAKE BABIES i think. if i get around to it, i will post a review of the whole album, as well as DO NOT DISTURB and the bonus tracks. other things. LIZ PHAIR AND LILITH FAIR. michael asked me about that. i wrote a long ass message about the problems of LF and all that, and then decided to scrap it. sounded pretentious and snooty. i used the word hegemony in the message. how wrong is that. damn liberal arts education. anyway to sum it up, i was glad that LIZ PHAIR was included, not just cuz i am a big LIZ fan, but because that meant LF wasn't becoming a sad muzak festival, with generic mediocre folk singers. LIZ can rock, and comes up with some of the most subversive songs that i know of. i also think she was a better songwriter than the other chick rockers that were chosen first LF. like TRACEY "mother mother" BONHAM (though props to her for covering PJ HARVEY's 50ft QUEENIE, even if she did the cover note by note, - though i did feel like i was the only person in the audience who knew the song...). i would like to see other more daring selections for LF though. how about said PJ HARVEY? or BJORK? or (dare i imagine the implications, or if she would even except an offer) DIAMANDA GALAS? how excellent would that be? can you just imagine what it would be like at the end of the show and DIAMANDA came out and did the group song of the evening with the other singers (LISA LOEB, JEWEL, SARAH) rock on. re: APRIL MARCH > An entirely original and strange record that ultimately > seduces with its quirky grace. NOW NOW NOW!!!!!! anyone have a spare promo copy? oh and sixpence none the richer and a note about christian rock. at one time in my life (alright it was in another life really) i listened to a lot of CCM (contemporary christian music) - this shocks a hella lot of friends of mine but whatever, i have no shame about my past - or even my present...its the future that worry about. all i can say is that a lot of artists who were once part of the CCM scene that have tried hard to dis-associate themselves because they hated the narrowmindedness of it all. no that isn't necessarily a tautology (narrowminded christians). i happen to be friends with quite a few openminded christians. erm. can't think of any right now, but i am sure i am. :) anyway not counting people like AMY GRANT who dis-associated herself from the scene for the opportunity for a wider audience, point in case would be some one like SAM PHILLIPS (not the sun records guy, but the other one, the one married to T-BONE BURNETT and was the mute killer in that DIE HARD sequel). she once recorded her stuff under the name LESLIE PHILLIPS and was part of the whole scene. her last album under that name was actually quite excellent, and did horrible in the CCM circle (routinely panned, because it didn't fit into any formula that they had). it has subsquentially been rereleased under her "new" name SAM PHILLIPS. by the way, there is a greatest hits/best of album being released (already released?) called ZERO ZERO ZERO (in reference to the fact that she has really had no commercial hit to speak of?). i think this fulfills her label contract, and i don't know where she goes from here. OMNI-POP (IT"S ONLY A FLESH WOUND LAMBCHOP) her last album a couple of years ago, did very poorly commercially, though i thought it was a great album (not as good as MARTINIS AND BIKINIS, but still damn tasty). why i am i bringing this up? i dunno. it really has nothing to do with SIXPENCE NONE THE RICHER other than, don't necessarily be fooled by the christian rock label. irvin ps. amusing anecdote. friend of mine was flipping through the local weekly rag and told me "look! MICHELLE SHOCKED is playing!" i, of course, was inmpressed that she even knew who MICHELLE SHOCKED was and told her so. she, of course, looked at me with an air of derision, and said, " please, i used to be a huge GO-GO's fan! of course i know who she is!" without laughing my ass off, i had to explain to her, that she was thinking of GINA SCHOCK (who post GO-GO's breakup and pre GO-GO's reunion, formed the band HOUSE OF SCHOCK - anyone know what has she been doing lately?) and that MICHELLE SCHOCKED was a singer of a completely different ilk. she was not amused at my amusement of her. speaking of the GO-GO's anyone know what the various band members are up to? last i heard JANE WIEDLIN was down in LA with her band FROSTED but that was a couple of years ago. cute indiepop band, i don't think it went anywhere. and is BELINDA CARLISLE doing anything either? and what was the name of the other one? that's it, gotta go back to work. damn ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 4 Feb 1999 10:20:21 -0800 From: Neile Graham Subject: My Scarlet Life Tour News For those interested. - --N >From: DivaNation@aol.com >Date: Thu, 4 Feb 1999 03:06:02 EST >To: DivaNation@aol.com >Mime-Version: 1.0 >Subject: MSL:St Louisx2, IAx5, Chicago, WIx2, Dekalbx2, Champaign > > > > > > >***THANKS+APOLOGIES+MORE+QUOTES+TOUR DATES*** > >#1) Thank you all for coming to METRO!! >The place was PACKED!! >Over 1000 people!!! >We had such a great time because of you. >I hope you enjoyed watching the string quartet / trio >perform the arrangement that Amy wrote for them. > >#2) Now some apologies: > >#2a) Sorry about the electrical problems that plagued our >New Year's Eve show. Twenty-five-year-old Matt Slocum, lyricist and multi-instrumentalist for spiritual folk-pop band Sixpence None The Richer, didn't inherit Wainwright's instant acceptance, but the classically- trained rocker skillfuly adds a symphonic grace to his gently moving pop songs. Granted, the Nashville trio is easy to overlook at first. Vocalist Leigh Nash's sorrowful soprano bears a resemblance to many a weepy frontwoman of our time. But she gives just the right voice to Slocum's sensitive lyrice, which follow the thoughts of a beleagured romantic holding out for hope and the occasional pure pleasure. The fragrant lyricism of lead single, "Kiss Me", is just the most obvious example. Fans of the Innocence Mission and the Sundays may find a lost love on this slow- burning breakthrough. -- Jim Meyer" My Rufus question is based on the first half of the first sentence above: I know very little about him, but has he been performing for a long time? Was last year his debut album, or merely his major-label debut? (And when did he split with Chaka Khan, anyway? :-) I mean, I know that Eric Matthews has released two records of what could be called orchestral pop since 1995, for example, so am I rushing to a cynical conclusion that the reason Rufus is getting props here is due to the fact that he's on the Dreamworks label, which would have a bigger promotional budget than an indie label like Sub Pop would? And, to be honest, it was a couple of "scenes" (a few paragraphs within a couple of chapters) that earned my admiration. Easy read; not quite as "philosophical" as _Einstein's Dreams_. _Dance For Two_ is a collection of separate essays, all having appeared at different times in different places; so far very much worth the read. Same Lightman style of speaking about things technical interleaved with things emotional, all while keeping the story within the narrative domain of the common man (err, person). Very descriptive, yet very subtle. - - B. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 5 Feb 1999 01:38:36 -0500 (EST) From: KickInside@webtv.net Subject: alt.music.ecto Dearest ectophiles, Why doesn't anyone ever post on the ecto newsgroup? I enjoy the mailing list, but I would certainly rather interact with fellow ectophiles on a newsgroup. Please e-mail me, anyone who is interested. I second that opinion Jeff!!! An incredibly beautiful and melancholy song. Sarah is a new discovery for me thanks to the Ecto mailing list. Thank you! ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V5 #41 *************************
