I think I heard about them from CMJ a couple years back, I have "The Fatherless and the Widow".(REX, 1993) At the time I think they were a Christian band, but I think they've strayed from that a bit, listening to the new song. I think they did still have that "sundays" kind of sound, which is why I probably bought it (anything compared to the Sundays I just have to get, same thing with Kate Bush) Julie ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 02 Feb 1999 10:51:05 -0800 From: Greg Bossert Subject: Re: snakefarm/innocence mission Neile Graham wrote: > I feel like a Leonard Cohen album. I'm adding shows all the time - check http://www.freecloud.com/heather/news.asp for all the latest concert information, especially before driving long distances. Here's a smattering of what I was listening to the past year: 1. Dana and Karen Kletter - Dear Enemy. I cannot rave enough about the gorgeously dark piano-driven melodies and harmonies of the twin Kletters - - you must run out immediately and buy this album. I mean it. Really. Go now. I'll wait. ... Ok you're back. Good! On with the list... 2. Elliott Smith - XO. If you're not already familiar with Elliott, he did the soundtrack to Good Will Hunting. Baby Britain and Independence Day are my favorite tracks. 3. Friend Side Monkey - Those Pesky Bubbles - unfortunately, this innovative Chapel Hill electronica ensemble broke up recently, but they leave as their legacy this self-released CD filled with delightful bleeps, blips and grooves. 4. Jane Siberry - Child - although it was released last year, I didn't start listening to it until the holidays. It's a double CD filled with beautiful songs about winter and the holidays, many quite ancient and obscure, performed live by Jane and other singers and musicians in New York City. Highly recommended. And I just heard that she is planning another tour of Child this coming year! 5. The Simpsons - Songs in the Key of Springfield - you *know* how big a fan I am. I am seriously thinking of working up a couple of these tunes, so don't be surprised if you hear "happy birthday lisa" or "Dr Zaius" at a future show :-) 6. Loreena McKennitt - Book of Secrets. I've been a fan of Loreena's for years, and I'm glad that she's finally got the recognition she deserves. Boy, I never thought I'd hear her on Top 40 radio though! - - heather - -- |*********************************************************| | Heather Russell | | My music site: http://www.freecloud.com/heather | | The Mending Wall: http://www.unc.edu/~gumption/tmw.html | | Email: hrussellatbellsouthdotnet | |_________________________________________________________| "I'm in favor of love as long as it doesn't happen when 'The Simpsons' is on television." --- Anita, age 6 ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Feb 1999 18:03:46 -0800 From: "Neil K. I came *very* close to putting this on my list for '98, and the only reason I didn't was that I didn't listen to it all that much in the second half of the year, and I never really put my finger on why. > 6. Loreena McKennitt - Book of Secrets. I've been a fan of Loreena's > for years, and I'm glad that she's finally got the recognition she > deserves. Boy, I never thought I'd hear her on Top 40 radio though! This morning I got e-mail from musicboulevard which announced the release of a compilation, _Celtic Woman_ or something like that. It actually had the gall to refer to Loreena as the genre's "one breakout artist." Am I missing something? What happened to, amongst others, Enya? jeff np: nothing; I stuck Maria McKee's _You Gotta Sin to Get Saved_ in the CD ROM, but my still-not-yet-back-from-the-dead NT system isn't actually producing any noise, even though it claims the sound card is alive. and yes, the speaker wire is plugged in. - -- |Jeffrey C. Anyway, it seems they're trying to break in the UK, and there's a good article on them online at http://www.sampler.co.uk/features/bellatrix/ with real audio attached.
