It was interesting because although the only favourite songs of mine she played were You Had Time and a very very unrecognisable In Or Out, I still loved every second of it, and songs I hadn't liked so much in record just seemed to make sense. I previously found the words to Know Now Then a bit clumsy, but when she performed it with so much power over such a minimalist background, it just seemed like beautiful poetry. And I won't even start on how much I liked Anticipate. This is the third time Ani has been to Melbourne since I discovered her (in 95), and yet its only the first time I've been able to see her, so it was a concert I went to with high expectations. From what I've managed to pick up, Happy has brought out a new CD (I know, I know - where have I been!). Does anybody know if it's been released in South Africa? Just thought I'd pick up on something Vickie said about Babe II: Pig in the City. That was without question my favourite movie of 1998. The problem was that the hype was aimed at kids - cute piggy movie, just like the first one. But I'm not sure it was suitable for kids (every time I went to see it, most of the kids in the audience were quite disturbed - many mommies ended up taking their sobbing kids out). I loved the movie. It was clever and funny and (IMHO) a very sad social commentary - just try not being moved by the little doggy saying "...my human tied me in a plastic bag and frowed me in the water..." A couple of other comments/queries... we now have the TV series of Le Femme Nikita running. It seems to be Canadian/Australian, with Peta Wilson playing the title role. After initial skepticism, I've grown to like it, and they play quite a bit of ecto-ish music (I've head Sarah McLachlan a few times.) Does anybody else know it? We've also just started getting Babylon 5 (quite a few years late, but that's OK), which I remember people on this list mentioning favourably. Enough for now. I don't even know if I'm sending the post to the correct address. *Hugs* to all my ecto friends. Oh, what the hell, *hugs* to everybody :) Robert P.S. Bubba: if you read this, can you mail me - I've lost your email address? Because the concerts I saw this weekend were so amazing, I feel the need to share them with you, the Ectofolk. Friday night was the Damon & Naomi/Dana and Karen Kletter double bill at Passim's. I think I'm one of the bigger D&N fans in the area, since I've been to every live show they've done since the rerelease of _More Sad Hits_ and travelled many miles to see them at CMJ last fall. Usually they end up trying to make like the coolest summer-camp counselors at smelly beer halls full of yobs, but the atmosphere at Passim's was much more suited to their brand of dreamy folk drone. Most of their set came from their most recent album, _Playback Singers_, which has a more live feel to it than their previous, production-heavy work with Kramer of Shimmy-Disc fame, though they also played some older tunes, including a glorious new all-Naomi arrangement of "This Information Age". At the close of their set, they performed a tune about sisters by Bob Dylan and Jacques ??? (didn't catch the last name) in honor of sister-enemies Dana and Karen, which was similarly sad and sublime. Damon said something about how they hoped they'd only changed Jacques' lyrics! (They also talked about having the only harmonioum travel-case in existance at one point, though their jokes are subtle and lose something out of context. Oh well.) Dana and Karen's set wasn't quite what I'd expected after reading comments here on Ecto. Unlike the previous report that they didn't talk much (or even acknowledge the audience, IIRC), they were actually really talkative and funny onstage. Part of the room decor at Passim's, which they found endlessly amusing, was a bowling trophy that was nicknamed "the Personal Vampire Award" for the evening. In addition to their lovely tunes from _Dear Enemy_, Dana and Karen premiered some new tunes, including a sad song about Prozac (does this mean that D&K might be putting together a new album? The mind boggles!). The final tune was a revival of the first track on _Procedure_ by Blackgirls, the one about being dumped and sort of trying to accept but getting frustrated and realising what an idiot the other party was. Unfortunately, I cashed in the Blackgirls albums before I was able to really get into them, and now I'm starting to want to hear them again (as well as the Dish EP). Anyone got extra copies lying around? Were there any other Ecto-types at the show? I know Ofer was working the board, and I would have gone over and said hi if this guy who semi-publicly dissed me wasn't sitting right in front of the sound board. Grrr. I missed out on Rasputina on Saturday night, but ended up swinging by the House of Blues on Sunday night for to see Mr. Airplane Man. Those who might not be familiar with these guys are hereby strongly encouraged to check them out. MAP are a duo comprised of a drummer and a singer/guitarist, who play rock-and-roll heavily influenced by roots and blues musics. Their music is quite compelling and powerful -- the lead singer has a deep, strong voice reminiscent of PJ Harvey and Hope from Mazzy Star, and they have a commanding, energetic stage presence, such that I thought their music was going to light the stage on fire at one or two points! Yikes. If you want to check Mr. Airplane Man out, do not pass go and do not collect $200 -- make it over to the Plough and Stars in Cambridge on Monday nights at 10pm and groove, baby. Or just check out their website (sadly devoid of soundclips) at http://www.vacant.org/vacant/Airplaneman/index.html. Oh yeah, and just to add to this spate of favourite movies: _Blow-Up_, _Trust_, _Harold and Maude_, _Kiki's Delivery Service_ (did someone talk about buying this a few months ago?), _Petulia_, _The Heroic Trio_, _Insignificance_, _City Lights_, _Stranger than Paradise_...the list could go on forever. This is what I want to go into for a life, you know. ^_^ - --Chelsea - --- Chelsea the mod pixie tugboat@channel1.com http://i.am/modpixie "Zoos are full, prisons are overflowing...how the world so dearly loves a cage" -- Harold & Maude ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 01 Feb 1999 20:56:31 -0500 From: cinders blue Subject: february at the living room (nyc) listings of interest... >From: livingrm > >The Living Room >84 Stanton St. >New York, NY 10002 >212.533.7235 > >Mon 2/1 - 7:30 Gavin Thomas / 8:30 Tom Freund / 10:00 Dorothy Scott >Wed 2/3 - 7:30 Featherweight / 8:30 Dayna Kurtz / 10:00 DB Leonard / 11:00 >Laif Artnzen >Sat 2/6 - 8:30 Melissa Huffsmith / 10:00 Mecca Bodega / 11:00 Jim Allen >Mon 2/8 - 8:30 Tom Freund / 10:00 Voices on the verge w/ Erin McKeown, >Jess Klien, Rose Polenzani >Fri 2/12 - 7:00 Josh Max's Outfit / 8:30 Trina Hamlin / 9:15 Coleen Sexton >/ 10:00 Lori Geltman / 11:00 Songs From A Random House >Wed 2/17 - 8:30 A Fire & Water Living Room w/ Rose Polanzani, Kevin So, >Chaz, Chet Keef, Star Drooker, Pamela Means & More! >Fri 2/19 - 8:30 Dayna Kurtz / 10:00 Marilyn & Friends / 11:00 Jabbering Trout >Sat 2/20 - 8:00 Randy Kaplan, Mike West & Myshkin / 10:00 Karen Ramos / >11:00 Rachel Loshak / 12:00 Terre Roche >Tue 2/23 - 7:00 Yoav / 8:30 Beth Sorrentino of Suddenly Tammy / 10:00 The >Bisbees / 11:00 Carmaig DeForrest >Thu 2/25 - 8:00 tubers and roots...a lunchbox recordings evening featuring >live music by chris cunningham, rachelle garniez, and cathie >martino...musical collage by feng shui...visuals curated by virgil of >paperveins...poetry by shai isenberg and josh steichmann > >**Call to confirm - schedule changes occur 212-533-7235 ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V5 #37 *************************
