Hello Ectophiles! The fanzine is very much in the planning stages and we need some help to make the first issue worth reading, worth keeping. We don't yet know how many issues a year we'll be producing, and we are not yet taking subscriptions, but we would like some help with the first issue's articles. The first thing to know is that the fanzine now has an official name! The "Collective Heart" (the people behind the fanzine) brainstormed and we threw names back and forth at each other and Happy. Happy herself was the one to come up with the name, and we all like it quite a bit. We are now... "Inside Offworld" (I/O for short, pronounced eye-oh) To give you a small taste of what we have up our sleeves, here is something we have planned for the first issue, and how you can help. ======== Happy's brand new studio questions, and a techical writer: There will be a major feature/article about Happy's new studio that she's building from scratch. Happy herself is contributing greatly to this article by talking about building the studio and her equipment. YOU can help: Do you have any questions for Happy about her studio, about her equipment, about her recordings, including mixing and engineering? What do *you* want to know about the technology and technical aspects of Happy's recordings. Happy is keeping notes on a hand-held cassette recorder that will be transcribed. Is there a technical/musical-minded Happy fan writer out there willing to help us order and write this article once all the questions are answered and the transcriptions are ready? (For those who just want to ask questions, don't worry, we won't try to corral you into writing unless you want to write. Right now we want questions for Happy so no one will later go through a "I wish they'd asked...if I'd had a chance, I would have asked..." syndrome. This is to be an article that technical and musical-minded people will enjoy thoroughly, but that won't leave non-techys (like me) in the dust. ======== Project Lo For any Project Lo fans in a questioning mood, we're planning a major article/interview with Bon Lozaga from Project Lo. If you've ever had a question for Bon, about either his working with Happy *and/or* his own solo and group works, now is your chance. Send us your questions and we'll pass them along to Bon. ======== Movie reviewers wanted: We're planning to have, in every issue, a review/article about a film that has influenced a Happy song, or that she just likes a lot. Happy will give her thoughts about the film and (if applicable) the song it influenced. The first in line is pretty obvious, Blade Runner. Any film buff Happy fans out there who want to write a review of Blade Runner, and can tie in "Roy" too? ====== We'll need more contributors later (and appreciate those who have already offered to help) but these calls for help are a start. We'll have our own domain name, and a dedicated e-mail address for the zine before the launch, but for now write me at either vickie@wwa.com or vickie@wwa.smoe Thanks in advance! Out of curiosity Vickie, how do you rate "The Fifth Element"? I personally think it's the most original and interesting sci-fi movie since "Blade Runner". Some of it reminds me of parts of "Heavy Metal", the animated sci-fi movie from the early 80s. How do the rest of you rate these movies in your personal lists of fave movies? Oh BTW, if this topic has already been done to death here on Ecto then please point me to the appropriate archives to read. Thanks! My little brother is a big Ridley Scott fan. Blade Runner is one of his favorite movies of all time. I'm going to be turning him on to Happy's music this weekend. We both share our newly discovered musical gems with each other. He's the one that told me about Tori Amos right when "Little Earthquakes" came out. > The Replicants were Roy Batty (Rutger Hauer) FYI, in case you all didn't already know this, Anne Rice wanted Rutger Hauer, not Tom Cruise, to play Lestat in "Interview with the Vampire". I >personally think it's the most original and interesting sci-fi movie >since "Blade Runner". Some of it reminds me of parts of "Heavy Metal", >the animated sci-fi movie from the early 80s. I really liked The Fifth Element. I went to see it mainly for Milla, and because Luc Besson directed it, but liked just about everything about it. We saw it a few times at the theater. We recently bought the DVD too. I don't actually think it's a great movie, or an important one, but yes, it's original and interesting, and likely to be very influential to a generation of upcoming filmmakers, and no matter what, it's a whole LOT of fun. It might be in my top 100, if I were ever to make up a list. I also have a soft spot for "Heavy Metal" because it provided a diversion at a time in my life when I really needed one. >> The Replicants were Roy Batty (Rutger Hauer) > >FYI, in case you all didn't already know this, Anne Rice wanted Rutger >Hauer, not Tom Cruise, to play Lestat in "Interview with the Vampire". I still haven't seen that movie. Charley and I tried to get Equipoise to Neil Jordan while he was making the movie, but I don't know if he ever got it, or if he did, if he listened to it. If Rutger Hauer had been in it, I would have seen it in the theater. Tell us if your brother likes Happy! Vickie ps, My all-time favorite film, btw, I know you didn't ask, is Terry Gilliam's Brazil. After that, in rough order, Blade Runner, the 1985 Australian film Bliss, Local Hero & Birdy. Other favorites, in no particular order, War Hunt, Fitzcarraldo, Dersu Uzula, Never Cry Wolf, One From The Heart, Say Amen Somebody, Wings of Desire, The Professional, Star Wars, The Stunt Man, Crimes of Passion, Pulp Fiction, Comfort & Joy, Life of Brian, Raising Arizona, Bullitt, Treasure of the Sierra Madre, The Cotton Club, The Conversation, Apocalypse Now (yeah, Coppola fan), L.A. Confidential, A Clockwork Orange, Brother Can You Spare A Dime?, 28 Up, Zero Effect, Fearless, Gambit, Until The End of the World, High Wind In Jamaica, This is Spinal Tap, Sling Blade, the original Cape Fear, Man Facing Southeast, Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet, Dark City, At Close Range, T2, and about a hundred others, most of which I'll think of as soon as I send this. My tastes are fairly Hollywoody, but eclectic, I think. My most recent favorites are Shakespeare In Love, and, strangely enough, bizarre as it may sound, Babe II, Pig In The City, which is a dark, cleverly subversive and very, very funny movie. I'm not surprised at all that it bombed at the box office. At least it will come out on DVD that much quicker. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 29 Jan 1999 09:36:07 -0500 From: "joe n chuck" Subject: suzanne vega @ borders.com hi all! thought some people may be interested in this... chuck > > >ANN ARBOR, Mich., Jan. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Internationally renowned singer, >songwriter and author, Suzanne Vega, will discuss her new book -- The >Passionate Eye: The Collected Works of Suzanne Vega -- live on Borders.com >(http://www.borders.com) Feb. 10 at 10 p.m. EST. I'm making a compilation tape and i want to put a cut on it by Annie Lenexa called "did i tell you i love you" at least i think that's what its called can anyone tell me what that is on and i just like to comment on the movie the fifth element. i saw it in the movie and i have it on tape. it was fun. it was entertaining. but the humor was way over the top and it did not have to be. way over!!!!!!!! every character. if they would have just left the humor in Bruce's hands it would have been a brilliant sf film. but the director must have felt uncomfortable or could not relate to that. 2 minutes of the black guy would have been enough. There was no reason for that kind of over the top crap at that point in the movie. Even a lot of the b-movie veteran actors that were chosen dragged what was still an enjoyable film down to a lower level. And for me the art direction was what i was most impressed with. I also have been following Moebius since the seventies when i saw his work for the first time in many issues of the French magazine, Metal Hurlant........which was later reprinted in Heavy Metal in this country. And of course it was the taxi segment in the heavy metal movie that was his and transfered to the 5th element in atmosphere. fred ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 29 Jan 1999 08:56:11 -0600 (CST) From: "Joseph S. Not familiar with O'Gara's though If you get the chance to see the band February, they're an excellent indie-pop band--especially good to see live, with great female vocals. Another of my favorites was Suspect Bill, a swing/ska band (before those bands were the rage)--though I'm not sure if they're playing much anymore. One more band you'd enjoy is a band called Big Sky. They're release, Standing on the Earth, is worth searching down while you're they're. Imagine a cross between Renaissance and Grace Slick, with a bit of Tuvan throat- singing thrown in for good measure. Real nice people as well. The band The Sandwiches is also a great live bar- band--totally crazy. They often dress in costume (including a gorilla, a Viking, a clown, and a go-go dancer who dresses up as Tiger Woods). They also serve the audience peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Their sound is definitely retro-80's--sort of a cross between Gary Numan and the Go-Go's but lots and lots of fun. If you're interested in CD shopping while you're they're, the best stores are Cheapo and Disc-Go-Round--I particularly like Cheapo. They both have stores in several locations around the metro area, but hte best CHeapo stores are located in Uptown Minneapolis kitty corner from the Uptown theater, and on Highland Street in St. Paul. The Cedar Cultural Center usually has great shows going on - --I was able to see acts like Mari Boine, Lena Willemark, and Cesaria Evora there. It's also where Ani DiFranco always played before she hit the big time. Boiled in Lead also does their annual St. Patrick's Day show there. Other recommended venues are the Fine Line Music Cafe, which has a nice ambience for a bar and a great sound system, and decent food, though a little over-priced. First Avenue is fine for loud shows, but expect noisy crowds and expect to stand if you want to be close to the stage (though they occassionally set up tables on the dance floor for quieter shows--such as Lisa Germano or Katell Keinig). The Bryant Bowl/Cabaret usually has some hilarious plays and/or cabaret shows going on. Yes, it's a bowling alley, but also has a decent small stage space. There is a ton of small theater in the area (Minneapolis actually has more theater per capita than any other city in the U.S.) You should have plenty to do, despite the cold. Hope you're able to get out and partake of the fun. Let me know if there is anything else I can help with. For restaurants I recommend Cafe Brenda for upscale but worth it vegetarian & seafood, the Pickled Parrot for BBQ Ribs or Sunday Brunch (they have the *best* bacon!). There are a ton of good restaurants though--all depends on what you're in the mood for (unless you want Mexican food, which I suggest you wait until you go somewhere else--although south St. Paul has a few decent spots). The band in a good form, Margo's voice just as gorgeous as it is in the studio and politely enthusiastic crowd. The set was not quite what I expected - I thought it would be heavily based on the new record, but no, perhaps mindful of the fact that this was the first time they ever visited Australia they covered their whole career with just 4 songs from "Miles" thrown in. Margo is quite a comedian, with a deadpan delivery - the intro to "A common disaster" involving Neighbours (our local soapie) was very funny indeed, though a bit too long to quote here. Just trust me on this :) I'm glad that these two people from Over the Rhine made it to this leg of the tour, the keyboard player did an excellent job and Karen's (?) background vocals really enriched the sound. One strange detail - the drummer sat separated from the rest by a sheet of glass reaching to about his chin. I've never seen a set-up like this before, and I was wondering whether there was some acoustic-related reason or do they just like the look? All in all, event worth seeing. They will be in Melbourne this Tuesday, so if any Melbournians are reading - don't miss it! - ------------------------------------------------------ So I got this job, and I got a life, now what am I supposed to do? - ------ http://www.zip.com.au/~afries/hall.html ------- ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 29 Jan 1999 21:10:23 -0500 (EST) From: josh burnett Subject: Re: Neile's January obsessions On Wed, 27 Jan 1999, Neile Graham wrote: > I really do like the new ani difranco, _Up Up Up Up Up Up_ which is a great > relief to me after for some reason _Little Plastic Castles_ just didn't Okay, this is rapidly becoming a pet peeve for me. It's _Little Plastic Castle_ - it's singular, damnit! No s! :) It seems like *everyone* on Ecto makes this error, though. And I never see it anywhere else. Wassup with that anyway? :) Yeah, I'm annoyed easily. :) For the record, I like both LPC (especially the last 4 tracks) and _Up Up Up Up Up Up_ (especially "Tis of Thee", "Angry Anymore" and the title track. and back to lurking, jcb. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 29 Jan 1999 21:26:16 -0500 From: meredith Subject: cowboy junkies on liveconcerts.com Hi!
