Here's what I wrote about them then: Subject: Air, "Moon Safari" (a la Stereolab) I stumbled across a French duo called Air that reminded me a bit of Stereolab, but with some interesting twists... They've got the classic synths of Stereolab (moog and korg), and a few of their tracks feature some interesting 'vocoder' vocals by the 2 band members (Jean-Benoit Dunkel and Nicolas Godin) and there are also 2 tracks with guest vocals by Beth Hirsch. There are 2 song samples at the eonline site, as well as the review I copied below: http://www.eonline.com/Reviews/Music/Leaves/0,6,720,00.html When it comes to stylish electronica, French duos have risen to the top. Daft Punk did it by combining stripped-down grooves with terse, witty melodies, while Deep Forest works the ethno-techno World Beat angle. Now, here comes Air, taking an equally fresh approach. Ethereal, sensuous and slightly funky, Air's electronica makes a strong impression without stylistic strain. Because old-school keyboards dominate, most of Moon Safari rings slightly retro. The delicious "La Femme D'Argent," for instance, comes across as a dreamy French version of "Superfly." But "All I Need," which features the poignant and intriguingly soulful vocals of Beth Hirsch, definitely connects with the '90s and beyond. Let Air pervade your consciousness--you won't want to exhale. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Jan 1999 10:20:10 +1100 (EST) From: Sherlyn Koo Subject: (fwd) Beth Nielsen Chapman News Hey folks, Beth Nielsen Chapman news, for those interested... sherlyn ps - saw a great Ani Difranco show last night! =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= a+e=ig Sherlyn Koo - sherlyn@fl.net.au [Sydney, Australia] "If I am not who you thought I was, Well hello, it's nice to meet you..." - Melissa Ferrick - ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: mark@bethnielsenchapman.net (Mark Perry) Subject: Beth Nielsen Chapman News Date: Wed, 27 Jan 1999 14:34:04 GMT Lots of news for you today. I do not think I could top what Jeff had to say about Air. MixMag recently had a decent article about one of their concerts. The only thing that I wish to add is that it is great music to listen to after a long night of clubbing. As soon as I hop in my car after dancing I start with Air, then move onto some Fat Boy Slim, and Dario G. Compaired to much of the electronica I found Air to be a refreshing change. Faye sings very well. I like the albums quite a bit, despite not being able to understand anything. She covers Cocteau Twins songs on two albums - -- and sings new ones written for her by the Twins on one or two others. I don't have them all yet. Some of her earlier stuff is a lot more stereotypical Canto-pop, but it's all very good. I'm no good at remembering the English names of the albums. My favorite is the pink one with 10 tracks, some of which aren't in any real language. My next favorite is the all-white album, tied with the question mark album. That's where my Faye collection ends. I keep meaning to get her latest stuff, but never do. Thanks to Wong Kar-Wei, however, I can never see her without hearing "California Dreamin'", grr. Hmm... hkpop beckons, I guess. - --r. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Jan 1999 19:52:35 -0800 From: G Perez Subject: LA Shows of Interest 1/27 - Gregory Page & the Troubled Sleepers @ the Mint 1/28 - Buck @ the Troubadour 1/29 - Scott Thomas Band w/Joan Jones and Michael Lord @ the Troubadour Jon Brion w/The Solipstics and Amy Correia @ Largo 1/30 - Mare Winningham w/Janet Klein @ Largo 2/2 - Deborah Bartley @ the Opium Den 2/3 - Sky Cries Mary @ the Troubadour Poptopia '99 w/Splendid (featuring Angie Hart of Frente!) w/Kristian Hoffman, others @ the Gig 2/4 - Deborah Bartley @ the Crooked Bar Jason Falkner @ Dragonfly Poptopia '99 w/Kim Fox, The Sugarplastic, Sissy Bar, Lucy Gamelon, Belle Academe, others @ the Troubadour 2/5 - Poptopia '99 w/Space Twins, Tsar, Gwen Mars, Astropanties, Skip Holiday, others @ Martini Lounge Sunny Day Real Estate @ the Troubadour Lori Carson @ McCabe's Guitar Shop 2/6 - Poptopia '99 w/Cockeyed Ghost, Anna Waronker Band, Chris Von Sneidern, The Mello Cads, The Andersons, others @ the Gig Carlos Olmeda @ Highland Grounds Sinead Lohan @ the Hollywood Athletic Club 2/7 - Poptopia '99 w/Apples in Stereo, Baby Lemonade, Buck, Jason Falkner, others @ the Troubadour 2/10 - Natalie Merchant @ Universal Amphitheatre Rasputina @ the Troubadour 2/12 - the eels @ the El Rey Theatre Kelly Joe Phelps @ McCabe's Guitar Shop 2/17&18 -Brad Mehldau @ Largo 2/19 - Susan Tedeschi @ the House of Blues Jon Brion @ Largo Gregory Page & the Troubled Sleepers w/Starbelly @ the Mint 2/20 - Grant Lee Phillips @ Largo 2/22 - Cardigans w/Kent @ the Palace 2/24 - Lucinda Williams w/Patty Griffin and Rosie Flores @ the House of Blues 2/26 - Janet Klein @ Luna Park Jon Brion @ Largo 2/27 - Maire Brennan @ the El Rey Theatre 3/3&4 - Elliott Smith @ the El Rey Theatre 3/5&6 - Sleater-Kinney @ the Roxy 3/7 - Dave Mathews and Tim Reynolds @ the Arlington Theater (Santa Barbara) 3/11 - Fatboy Slim w/Dub Pistols, Gearwhore, and Jason Bentley @ the Hollywood Palladium 3/14 - Marilyn Manson and Hole w/Monster Magnet @ the Great Western Forum ____ gp ... in rotation: demos by Francesca Gregorini, Dudley, and Gregory Page. I can't believe it's not even the end of the first month and I've already bought mumblety discs this year. I really do like the new ani difranco, _Up Up Up Up Up Up_ which is a great relief to me after for some reason _Little Plastic Castles_ just didn't make that much of an impression on me. I didn't hate the horns, but they just didn't intrigue me, while the sound of this one is quirky and hooky to me, despite some of ani's most didactic lyrics. Anyway, I haven't had it that long but I think this is going to be one of my favourites of her discs. Nothing to top _Dilate_ but still a great one. Alex introduced me to _truthcage_ by Whitney Rehr. The liner notes call it alternative folk rock, and I guess that's as good a description as anything, but to my ear it leans closer to rock with some folk and jazz touches. Hard to know how to describe it. I said elsewhere that I hear flickers of resemblances with other artists (some early Jane Siberry harmonies, some offbeat Cindy Lee Berryhill humour) but most this is pretty individual stuff. I guess that stands. I recommend it to anyone interested in mellow folky atmospheric stuff that moves to boppy stuff, that moves to crunchy stuff, that moves... The disc I've been playing to death of all of these is Kristeen Young's _enemy_. I love her hard-rock sound combined with the high, Kate-ish vocals, and she has killer hooks in the songs here. I just can't stop hearing "Sacrifice" whether it's hitting the repeat button yet again or the radio in my head hitting that repeat button. There's so passion here I can't help loving the whole album. Also got Smoke City's _Flying Away_ after getting the "Underwater Love" song stuck in my head after hearing on MTV's _Amp_ (see? those horrible programs can sometimes bring something good to your attention!). It's Brazilian-flavoured dancey trippy music with catchy hooks and great vocals. Thanks to everyone's end of the year lists I was prompted to pick up a few things like Mari Boine Band's _Balvvoslatjna/room of worship_ (I find it hard to distinguish between her discs but I like them all!), Mandalay's _empathy_ (which is mellow and lovely), and Susan McKeown & Lindsey Horner's, _Mighty Rain_ (which might be my favourite of hers since _Bones_ gradually worked its way into my heart). Anyway, I'm embarrassed. I didn't mean to become such a purchaser of music, and isn't this supposed to be an off time of year? A well, bye for now. - --Neile n.p.
