I've got the cassettes of both Slack (the former name for what is now Liquorice, i.e. Jenny Toomey and Dan Littleton) and Geek (Jenny Toomey's pre-Tsunami band). I am contactable by private e-mail. When I saw Jenny Toomey do a solo show a few months ago, she said she was working on recording songs for a new Liquorice album; I had also understood from Dan Littleton that some material has been in the can for a while. So there will at some point be a new Liquorice album, on what label I can't say. I'm also a Gentle Giant fan; I saw them three times or so in '74-'75, and they were a tremendous live band. I like all of their albums up through, oh, =Free Hand=. I've been wondering if the King Biscuit Flower Hour set that recently came out (vintage '75, I think) is worth getting. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 Jan 1999 08:45:11 -0500 From: "Foghorn J Fornorn" Subject: RE: welcome Speaking of Bjork... Entertainment Weekly lists the planned release date for her new album as September. While reading Robert Fripp's diary on the DGM website, I came across this interesting snippet: Tuesday 10th. November, 1998; 10.49 3. Bjork's keyboardist has contacted [DGM] World Central. Bjork is planning to record an album of covers and is considering "Mary" from the RF solo album"Exposure" (1979). But Neal's e-mail wasn't too clear on just what the deal was, and when I asked him, he wasn't too sure either. So I dropped Lisa a note, and she has elucidated that, yes indeedy, it's two CDs shipped to you for a total of $10. Any combination of her two discs, _Close Your Eyes_ and _Mercy_. Crazy! > So if y'all have ever noticed this "phenom" of sorts as well, > comment, please, and if not, ignore me! ;D > Ø John Sorry to be so long in replying (I’m sure many of you thought I must be dead not to rise to _this_ bait) but I’ve been awash in a sea of excuses: undergoing (underwent) permanent, rejuvenating, liberating divorce from my entire family---I’m no longer related to anyone, and I feel like a grown up for the first time in my entire life; a mild bout of homelessness---staying with friends here and there, enjoying a short-term stint as a professional houseguest; a job that I’ve hated and decided to leave to seek other horizons is suddenly improving a great deal, making me feel more tied down to this city I’ve grown to dislike and had decided to quit; about to be sued by a hospital because my insurance company has not yet gotten around to paying a bill; and I’ve had God’s own flu. But enough about me. As many Ectophiles can tell you, John, I’ve been touting (some might even say flouting) the Fibbers for some time here on Ecto; their _Butch_ was my number-one pick for---mindblank: what year?---its year. Carla is one of my personal heroes. But I’ve never heard the Kristin Hershey sound you’re talking about, though I own and have seen and heard plenty of KH. Neither have I heard, however, I’m ashamed to say, _Scarnella_. I missed a chance to see them when we were all in Seattle on the same night this past November, and have yet to come across the album. So either A), this effect is unique to _Scarnella_, or B) you are, indeed, a crack baby. Impressive typing if the latter is the case, by the way. And allow me to extend a belated (see above) welcome to a new Ectophile with (finally!) some overlap with my musical taste. Diamanda, Polly Jean, and Carla are permanent fixtures in my musical firmament---all of them can be found on my lifetime-top-(n) list. I do, of course, like Happy and Kate and Jane (a bitch goddess, yes, but a goddess nonetheless) but some of my other favorites are L7, Patti Smith, Danielle Dax, Silverfish/Ruby, etc. I’m mostly really not a Tori fan, but I dislike her the least when she’s borrowing more obviously from PJHarvey than from whoever else she’s into at the time: Polly Jean’s influence is responsible, in my ever so frightfully humble opinion, for some of Tori’s most interesting vocal excursions. So welcome, John, and I’m looking forward to working with you in my neverending campaign to add some texture to the Ectopian repertoire. - --charley n.p.: Pulp: _This_Is_Hardcore_ n.r.: Niles Eldredge: _The_Pattern_of_Evolution _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? Jessica, Congratulations on the new addition to your instrument family! I'm not a player myself (a guitar is about all I can handle), but the cello is prolly my favorite stringed instrument (besides guitar, of course!) For some helpful internet info about them, take a peek at the 'Internet Cello Society' at- www.cello.org , and 'Chrissy Kemp's Cello Home Page' at- www.busprod.com/ rkemp/chrissy/Title.htm . I'm also a big fan of the predecessors of the cello, namely the 'viol', which was (and still is) used in Renaissance period music. There's a great film French film called 'All the Mornings in the World', that has to do with a reclusive viol player named Sainte Colombe, who was the premier player of his day (17th century), and his dealings with a young upstart named Marin Marais (played in the film by Gerard Depardieu). Marais becomes his student, and eventually, suitor to his daughters, and in the process nearly ruins his life, due to .... well, you'll just have to see the film ! ;-} Anyway, welcome to the world of the cello, and I look forward to hearing it on one of your future recordings !
