SCOTT, i am not a huge LENNY KRAVITZ fan, though my friend LINDSEY cannot praise him enough. i only have MAMA SAID (a tape found in the dollar bin ages ago) which i really liked, but for some reason, never really listen to (well actually i don't listen to my tapes all that often, unless it is on my walkman), and i have never picked up anything else by him. i hear 5 is a marked departure, but quite good though.... HUUB. looking at the SESSIONS AT WEST 54TH CD by SUZANNE VEGA, it certainly says 1997 as the copyright date. as for TRIED AND TRUE, i think that only recently came out in europe and asia, and i am glad to hear that it is getting US release, as i would hate to have to pay import prices for just two extra songs (as i have everything else on the CD, though not necessarily packaged so nice and tight together). as for the EELS. now that i know E is the same E, i shall definitely track down used copies of ELECTRO-SHOCK BLUES and the previous one BEAUTIFUL FREAK. I wasn't overly thrilled with BROKEN TOY SHOP (okay i thought it was really bad, i dunno why, i just couldn't get into it) but his first album A MAN CALLED E is just great. the single in japan right now is CANCER FOR THE CURE, but i don't know if the european/US lead single is different. it could be LAST STOP: THIS TOWN. either way, the hype sticker on the CD, lists both songs, so i figure they will both be singles eventually everywhere. whatever lead single i heard, i liked a lot, and i hear the new CD (which i mentioned previously is getting tons of press) is different than BEAUTIFUL FREAK, and not nearly as commercial. they made is sound very emocore in nature, but from what i heard, the subject matter and lyrics may fit into the emocore stereotype, but the music sounds much more rockin'. LISA GERMANO is a bonus plus. must purchase MUST PURCHASE... (irvin gets glazed look over his eyes). and JULESETTE...for the new MILLA CD the best place to purchase it is to get it from her indie label website http://www.peopletree.com which sells it. i have run across it a couple of times in various indie stores in the bay area (notably AMOEBA RECORDS on HAIGHT STREET) so if you don't wanna buy via net, let me know, and maybe i can run over and pick it up for you. oh and i was finally able to track down a used copy of STINA NORDENSTAM's DYNAMITE CD (in japan of course) and i don't know what i think of it. CHARLEY introduced me to her via MEMORIES OF A COLOR and for some reason neither AND SHE CLOSED HER EYES nor DYNAMITE has lived up to that initial one. i think i will have to give them both a separate spin and try to judge them on their own, as opposed to a comparison situation. i will say though, that STINA looks downright scary on the back cover of DYNAMITE, where as she looks quite beguiling on AND SHE CLOSED HER EYES, and quite glamorous on MEMORIES OF A COLOR. and thanks to whoever told me about the IVY release. now i gotta run out and get the new released version as well, so i can get the remixed songs. damn you. and here i thought they were just changing the covers to trick the buyer into buying the new IVY CD with the HIT SINGLE from the SMASH MOVIE S O M E T H I N G A B O U T M A R Y ! ! ! ! and i thought i was being so savvy (ha! i had the CD with the earlier cover!, i was IVY aware before the movie!). grrrr...... by the way, IVY fans should keep an eye out on a MARCH RECORDS compilation coming out soon called Pop Romantique (songs sung in French by Air, Ivy, Luna, Lloyd Cole, Magnetic Fields, Apples In Stereo, John Wesley Harding, Sukia, The Hang-Ups, and more). direct info from the head MARCHing LEADER himself SKIPPY. hope all is well. one confession before i go. i am sorry to say that i really do like the new SPICE GIRL's song GOODBYE. this means i might actually break down and purchase a SPICE GIRL CD. and i like the video too. my tastes seem to be going down hill.... i blame all that time in japan. a consistant barrage of bad japanese pop music, the infamous japanese bad taste in western pop music, and all those spice girls videos at the bar (i was in the bar for less than 45 minutes , and i saw three spice girls videos) have infiltrated my brain. someone help me.... I thought you were talking about T&T. Sessions has indeed been released in 1997. I think it's a great album, but also a little bit short (a shortage of which more of Suzanne's live recordings suffer, alas...) as for TRIED AND TRUE, i >think that only recently came out in europe and asia, and i am glad to >hear that it is getting US release, as i would hate to have to pay >import prices for just two extra songs (as i have everything else on the >CD, though not necessarily packaged so nice and tight together). Hmmm. Don't know *how much* you like Suzanne, but as a die hard fan I feel I should mention that it's not *just two extra songs*! :-] Especially the song Rosemary is one of the best songs she's ever written & recorded, imho. >hope all is well. one confession before i go. i am sorry to say that i >really do like the new SPICE GIRL's song GOODBYE. Well, you're forgiven for that.... When I was in the States for a holiday I was forced to buy their first album on cassette because it was one of the few tapes they sold at the gas station in the middle of nowhere. But I happened to like it, and even 18 months later it still makes my happy and brings back good memories whenever I play it. [blush] ;-) Well, enough rambling for now. Time to go on working.... This is the usual response to anyone that announces themselves here and is a very nice touch I think. This is a more civil and polite place to be. On the other hand I also noticed that there was not one response to the departure of Eponine. I'm not saying that's a good thing or a bad thing. I think that most people who leave here do so because they just dont have the time or it's more like "been there done that". When someone takes a shot on the way out ( after all this is still a Happy site ) it's to incite. I'm betting that ignoring someone is a powerful statement in itself. She probably got the point. But in response to her departing letter I would like to say that I find it ironic that the CD that pulled me into Happy.........Equipoise........is the same one that ended it for eppy. But my reocurring complaint is that again, someone puts a CD on once or twice and has an immediate opinion. That just might be Happys downfall. I don't think her music is for people who don't have the patience to let it all sink in. Happy is on the top of my list of artists i love. I don't think any of her CD's did it to me until after about 10 listens and reading the lyric sheet. MWABT took me an even longer time but it was well worth the wait. On the other hand i've been playing Lucinda Williams well over 20 times. I like it. I love Joy. WXPN amazingly picked it for number one this year. But number ONE???? Ani came in at number 7 and is so much more original both in lyrics and music. Almost every cut on CAR WHEELS reminded me of many other country female artists and country songs. The words are straight red neck trailer part white trash pathos. But I like to watch Jerry Springer ocassionally too. And I will ocassionally put Lucinda back on too. Neither MWABT or the new PJ cd made their top 50 either. I think overall it was a terrible year for music. But WXPN is starting to play good stuff again so maybe 99 will better. Totally out of the blue here...............did anyone ever listen to an album that came out in 1995 by VANESSA DAOU called zipless that put Erica Jong's poems to music. After all this time i still enjoy hearing it. fred..... ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Jan 1999 07:19:50 -0500 (EST) From: Michael Colford Subject: Re: Ani and Rufus On Wed, 13 Jan 1999, kerry white wrote: > Rufus was on Sessions lately and IMHO, has no singing voice at all. When i first picked up the album and started it, I thought, Whoa, this guy can't sing! At times, I too found it painful to listen to (although i remember having a similar reaction the very first time I listened to some unknown British singer's first album, The Kick Inside). I loved the style of the songs, and the arrangements, but something about his voice put me off a bit. However, by the second time I listened to the album, his voice moved me to tears. Really schizophrenic, I know, but that's how it is. Now, ever time I hear Rufus, I find his voice to be beautiful, but I can definitely see how people would find it the equivalent of nails on a chalkboard. As for Liz Phair, I don't find her voice all that great either, but i don't think that's her strength. Her strength is definitely in her songwriting, and she has a passable enough voice to carry the songs, imo. That being said, my boyfriend things Liz Phair has a horrible voice, can't really sing at all and couldn't stand her first couple of albums. He does, however, enjoy the couple of songs from her latest album that they play on the radio, so there's hope for him yet! Michael n.p.
