Michael (hi michael! thanks for the card!) gave a pretty decent discography, though he missed out on some of the singles and eps, including the great ELEPHANTINE ep, which is actually included in some versions of LOVE IS HELL. another mistake he made (ha! i had to beat a dead horse didn't i?) include the mispelling of the ex lead singer of LUSH (MIKI not MICKI). also he off handedly made a comment (watch those off hand comments, i am all about beating horses) about listening to LIZ PHAIR, and it having not a single gay reference in it. joyce mentioned pansy division as a connection, but there is actually a closer connection. not to out people but LIZ has been rather candid is early interviews about relationships she has had with women in college (well she did go to oberlin - ha! just kidding all). she has also made references about it, as well, about the time she lived in san francisco. LIZ has also made comments about her gay/lesbian friends were dissapointed with her and the release of EXILE IN GUYVILLE because she took out all the gay references that she originally had in the songs. i guess she is what my dyke friends like to refer to as a "4 year lesbian" sort of thing. anyway, if you anyone gets a hold of the original GIRLYSOUND demo tapes (yes woj, they are in the mail - sorry took so long, i was in japan and all) you can hear two queer references, one in the song FUCK AND RUN (i actually like the gsound version better, but not because of that, but because she actually sings the second refrain of the song, from the guy's perspective) where she uses the line "fuck you and your girlfriends too." the EXILE version was changed to "fuck you and your minions too." the second reference is in the song CAN'T GET OUT OF WHAT I'M INTO (sequenced on my tape right after FUCK AND RUN - but that might just be a coincidence) which includes the line "i figure two more years, and i'll go back to queers." okay too much information for an offhanded comments. typical irvin other things. i love reading the top ten lists of 98 releases. i will yet again refrain from making a list. especially since i just picked up a slew of CD's that i have to process. no, you don't want to know what i bought. really you don't. information. that latest CYNDI LAUPER - MERRY CHRISTMAS, HAVE A NICE LIFE is the last CD for her SONY/EPIC. it fulfilled her contract obligation, and as of a couple of months ago (this information is a couple months old, sorry i meant to post earlier), she was going to be labelless for awhile - maybe take some time off, maybe not record anymore?!? she wasn't happy with the promotions for SISTERS OF AVALON. go figure. the CD flopped big time, and her video for BALLAD OF CLEO & JOE looked like it was filmed with a video camera in her basement. sad. rumor has it that there is a sitcom pilot in the works though for her (she did win an emmy for her MAD ABOUT YOU guest spots). did anyone pick up MERRY CHRISTMAS...? just wondering how it was. information. if anyone is a big COCTEAU TWINS fan, i highly recommend the latest FAYE WONG CD. her two previous album had collaborations with various members of the cocteau twins (and/or covers of cocteau twins songs). Obviously all this collaborative work has rubbed off on FAYE's songwriting. this album doesn't have any guest appearances, but at least two of the songs (track 2 and 4) sound very cocteau twins in their production, and in FAYE's vocal treatment and layering. oh and it is a fantastic album too, with great packaging (you can pick up the CD with a bonus CD as well, three extra songs, or you can track down the japanese import version and get a remixed extra song, your choice). FAYE by the way is now writing a good majority of her stuff now, definitely making her a step above most chinese pop singers. information/question. WHEEE. reissues of HOSUE OF TOMMORROW ep and HOLIDAY album by one of my all time favorite bands THE MAGNETIC FIELDS. one of my all time favorite STEPHIN MERRITT (another gay artists to add to that previous list discussed) projects. look for his double (possible triple i am not sure, ICE just listed it as multi CD pack) release in the spring of 99 (may? i forget). the CD set is all new songs, called 69 LOVE SONGS or something like that. apparently they are also going to be organized in some sort of order (alphabetical?). anyone have more information question. does anyone know if SUZANNE VEGA's TRIED AND TRUE best of collection is going to be released domestically? i saw it many a places, and could have picked it up cheap, but opted to buy her SESSIONS AT WEST 54 instead, because i haven't seen that anyway stateside, but then the CD said it was actually manufactured in the US. was that ever released here? did i blink and miss it (the copyright date is 97 too!). question. i dunno if any on the list is a TRASH CAN SINATRAS fan, but an aquaintance of mine is trying to organize a tour for them, and could use help. email me for more details, or more info. questions. does anyone know if the lead singer of THE EELS, a guy who goes by the name of E, is the same guy E who released those two solo albums (A MAN CALLED E, BROKEN TOY SHOP)? E toured with TORI AMOS way back during her LE tour (the ecto connection). anyway i really like the lead single off of their latest CD (CANCER FOR THE CURE is the song name) and they are getting press left and right. if it is the same guy, then i am definitely picking up the CD.... and that is all. hope things are well. gotta go to sleep. work tomorrow, and am i still not over my jetlag. perhaps i will annoy you all with a review of my CD purchases from taiwan and japan. we shall see. love irvin np. HOLLY COLE - GIRL TALK. hey does anyone wanna buy/trade my old copy of this? i found a used japanese version with the bonus songs in japan for cheap, so figured i should pick it up, but that leaves me with two copies of it. i almost never do this, even to get bonus songs (i passed the WHITECHOCALATESPACEEGG japanese version with the bonus song on it as well! and i love LIZ!) anyway my other copy of GIRL TALK is actually a japanese import as well, but for some reason, it doesn't have the bonus tracks. email me and i am sure we can work something out.... ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Jan 1999 12:02:10 +0200 (EET) From: Juha Sorva Subject: Re: eels. Bummer about Cyndi. I can't believe she is labelless and considering giving up recording! SISTERS OF AVALON was a terrific CD, and it's true that it was promoted horribly. People just don't want to take poor Cyndi seriously. It's a shame. I bought MERRY CHRISTMAS two days ago actually, in a post-Christmas sale but haven't listened to it yet. I'll remark about it after I do. For those interested, I did pick up the new Melissa Ferrick as well, and enjoyed that quite a bit upon first listen. As fa.* is a one-way-gateway I haven't been able to write back through news, but as I saw Eveline introduce herself, I thought I'd give it a try. I think it was Yngve who first introduced me to Ecto-music back in 1991 or something like that, I can't quite recall wether I borrowed the first Happy-album from him or Alvin, but when I did, I was completely in love w Happy and have been so ever since :) In case this post doesn't get through, I won't bother to write about my favourites (yet), but as someone here asked about Ephemera, I thought I'd mention that when I first found the album, I tried to describe them this way: A wonderwul mixture of... Cranberries, Velvet Belly, Bjørk, Kari Rueslåtten and Suzanne Vega. (Keep in mind this was early 1997!) I also kept Yngve's post about them from February 1997, and without his permission (!!) I paste it here: I bought the debut album by a new norwegian band called Ephemera today. I would say that after listening to it 2 times through, it is as good as Velvet Belly's The Landing. The band consists mainly of 3 women all with wonderful voices. The album itself is very accustic oriented focused on the vocals. It seems like BMG Norway AS really is trying to move away from all those terrible albums released the last years. 1996 gave us The Landing and now Glue this year. This has never happened before!! Definitly Ecto .. Will write more about the album after a couple of more listenings. Very promising upto now, very promising. I never saw him write more though, but Glue was on of my top 5 from 1997. Did anyone watch OTR when they were on that Morning Show back in December? how did that go? Margo was in wonderful spirits tonight and Michael seemed to come out of his shell a bit...it was the usual langorous Junkies show but with some added kick as Michael and Jeff Bird went on some ripping solos...like Neal C, I feel so badly that I haven't bought all of their albums...I definitely need to pick up "Miles from Our Homes". During the encore, Margo attempted to sing "Sun Comes Up, It's Tuesday Morning" but she forgot the words after the first verse...while her brother kept playing the song, she tried to find the lyrics in her black folder that she keeps by her side and was dropping sheets all around her looking for the words...she gave up, composed herself, and started the song again and squeaked out all the words with a few stumbles, finishing to a rousing ovation... I loved the addition of Karin on vocals and acoustic guitar and Linford on keys and organ to some of the Junkies' songs...the arrangements throughout the show, especially a stripped down version of "Anniversary Song" were cool...I did miss the cellist who played with them back when _Lay it Down_ came out in 1996 :) one thing that i've noticed everytime i've heard or seen the Junkies live is that Margo always seems to be a leeeeetle bit off key when she sings...it happens often enough that I wonder if they need a better monitor guy or what...but she's still so nice, i'll have to let it go...
