An excerpt from a Lee's Palace (a toronto venue) email: > Fri. & Sat. Feb. 19 & 20 - MOXY FRUVOUS > - Friday with guest SARAH SLEAN > - Saturday with guest SUSAN WERNER Do you suppose the Moxy boys are ectolurkers? Actually, it's not too surprising that Sarah's opening for them because they are longtime friends, but the Susan Werner thing is an absolute shocker, at least to me. Ever since Jeff W traded me a copy of one of Susan's CD's for Sarah's, I've been DYING to see her (Susan) play, but I didn't figure I would for a while, since she never seemed to come even near here. Just thought of something... if I go to both shows, people are going to think I'm a fru-head... :-) Steve ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Jan 1999 19:06:45 +0000 From: "Tim" Subject: Catatonia - ---------- >From: "Bridges, Martin" >To: "'Xenu's Sister'" , ecto@smoe.org >Subject: RE: 1998 Favorites >Date: Mon, Jan 11, 1999, 9:28 AM > >They're >very proud of their Welsh heritage, and one song on "International Velvet" >is in Welsh, but with an English chorus inlcuding the line "Every day when I >wake up, I thank the Lord I'm Welsh"! Actually I think its a joke on all the English listeners. From what I've read in interviews, the verses (sung in Welsh) are really anti-Wales, and the chorus is sarcastic. I too strongly recommend Catatonia. Both albums (Way Beyond Blue, International Velvet) are worth buying, the first for its cute, catchy but intelligent pop tunes, and the second for the more muscular, inventive sound and huge songs. Cerys' voice is interesting, because it can be really rrrrrough and ready (usually the chorus), but at times she has this amazingly sweet childlike voice. Although Catatonia are a *fairly* conventional rock band, they are quite interesting musically. Their second album particularly is quite varied. "I Am The Mob" pounds, "Road Rage" has sweet synthesiser verses and then an enormous chorus, "Jonny Come Lately" is slow and dreamy, "Goldfish and Paracetemol" is a tongue-in-cheek trip-hoppified spoken words piece, the title track sounds like a really loud toy factory, "Why I Can't Stand One Night Stands" has a very slow cabaret quality to it, and the closer "My Selfish Gene" is a gorgeous piano number, which to me is quite similar to the piano songs that Happy does (In Hiding, Mother Sea), and just as surprising in relation to their usual style. Still, something told me to go buy _Up_ > when it was released, and I'm very glad I did. I was disappointed with _Monster_ too, although I think I would reserve the priceless gems among dung description for _Green_. But _New Adventures in Hi-Fi_ is a great CD, possibly my favorite of R.E.M.'s. "E-Bow the Letter" is wonderful. And, songs like "How the West Was Won and Where It Got Us" and "Leave" sort of point to the direction they ended up going on _Up_. It's definitely a CD worth checking out.
