A brief outline: Catatonia are a band from Wales fronted by Cerys Matthews, a charismatic female singer with a voice which is maybe not technically brilliant, but has plenty of gravel-voiced passion and a lovely welsh lilt. Hearing her roll her R's on the song "Road Rage" is quite wonderful. The music is fairly standard guitar-led pop, but they do it pretty well. They're very proud of their Welsh heritage, and one song on "International Velvet" is in Welsh, but with an English chorus inlcuding the line "Every day when I wake up, I thank the Lord I'm Welsh"! (That goes for all :-). I'm not very good at describing music, but with a little help from articles in Norwegain newspapers, I'll try .. The comments to the two first (Ephemera & Bertine Zetlitz) are mainly from the newspapers. *Ephemera* http://home.c2i.net/toeye/ephemera/log.htm - official homepage. (Bergen, Norway) From their h.page: An Ephemera song is melodious and harmonic, somewhere between pop, folk and rock. Consists of 3 Norwegian girls. So far, they're only published one CD - "Glue" (1996). Their music: evocative, low-voiced, airy and guitar-acoustic with a withdrawn beat. They voices are good and clear, but not great. There are 12 songs (in English) on the CD, most of them are mellow, "calm" songs. On the "negative" side - there are little variations in the vocals, the melodies and the performance. But all in all it's a nice recording with some beautiful songs. (imo :-) Note: there are 4 mp3 soundclips in their homepage which you can download and listen to. *Bertine Zetlitz* http://www.angelfire.com/ms/bertine/ 22 yo. (Oslo, Norway) Released her debut - CD: "Morbid Latenight Show" in 1998. Her music: synthetic pop with elements from both jazz and house/techno. In 1997, the single "Apples and Diamonds" was one of the more popular pop-songs in Norway. The songs varies in quality, in the best ("Abigail" and "Colour") Bertine's voice is very nice, and she appears as the techno-pop's answer to Sade. She writes her music herself (in English). *Herborg Kråkevik* http://www.dreamscape.com/waystein/herborg/herborg.htm - a fan side with just pictures. 24 yo. (Bergen, Norway) She has made 2 CDs - "Haugtussa" (?) and "Herborgs verden" (1998). I haven't heard the first one, but I have the latest one and I love it :-) She writes some of the texts herself, but the melodies are not her own - many of them are traditional, old songs/ballads. Herborg has a warm and beautiful voice, and she's a great theater actress. Two things combined - her beautiful voice, and the songs which I know very well - I grew up with some of them - makes her latest CD great imo. But I don't know what someone who haven't heard the music before or relates to it in some way, would think about it. Herborg's voice alone is very good. But I don't know if that alone is enough - I can't tell .. sorry ..! 1998 got to be a great year for Herborg - she's very popular in Norway, and her latest CD has sold a *lot*. Actually, my sister was going to buy it for me for Christmas, but it was nearly impossible to get hold of - sold out everywhere. Fortunately she found a store who had it - only 2 left ..! This winter, she's also playing "Juliet" in "Romeo & Juliet" on "Den Nationale Scene" in Bergen (theater) - it took less than a week to sell out most of the tickets for at least saturedays ..! On May 1st, I'm going to watch it (the theater) together with my sister, who lives in Bergen - I can't wait! *Trading* >>Another generally fun option is to set up a trade with someone. I'm sure there are at least a handful of ectophiles who'd be happy to get their hands on impossible to find Norwegian albums who'd be willing to pick things up stateside (or elsewhere in the world).<< I'd be happy to help if anyone want that .. (trading) :-) *Neal* >>(and to answer your next question, and a common ecto first... np is now playing, nr is now reading)<< Thanks .. that was just what I was going to ask .. :-) Eveline ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ hansen@telko.no (Vestfold, Norway) np: Liz Phair - whitechocolatespaceegg ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 Jan 1999 12:46:14 -0800 From: Eponine Subject: Elliott Smith/Happy Rhodes/Farewell, Ecto Hi Ecto Gang - If I had heard Elliott Smith's 1998 major lable debut, 'XO', a few weeks ago instead of just this morning I would have included it in my "Best Of" list. It's a most sumptuous sounding disc, just beautiful, a little mellow, a little groovy. It soothes me. It delights me. Much has been made of Mr. Smith's idolization of John Lennon, and I must say that it must definitely be true because you can't help but hear the influence in his songwriting. A remark like this coming from me is the highest of compliments, indeed. But I think that the way he overdubs his vocals is more reminiscent of Simon and Garfunkel than Lennon and McCartney. NOT to imply that he does not have his own unique mojo working, or that his music is some sort of retro novelty act, oh no. Very nineties, meant in the best way. I love this album! Two of my Happy Rhodes special-orders came in: 'RhodeSongs' and 'Equipoise'. RhodeSongs, in my opinion, has some charming moments and some clumsy moments. Equipoise I really hate. This is not for me AT ALL. It's too bad, too, because just from having heard 'The Keep' I know that she is a great songwriter, so it's probably not the songs themselves that leave me cold, but the production. I cannot get into this outer space fixation that she seems to have and the bloodless, synthetic production which is supposed to symbolize - what? - "alien"ation? - strikes me as kind of cheesy. I really don't like it and I won't be buying any more of Happy's CDs. I wish I hadn't bought this one. Well don't bother sending hate mail my way because I'm thinking I'll just unsubscribe from this list anyway. I had my expectations of what this list would be like, and the reality was different. That's all. I'm not saying "You guys suck" or anything like that. Ecto is just not my cup of tea. (Yup, this reply took a while in the coming... :)) I just stumbled upon a record by the strangely named OOIOO, and dug this one up... Incidentally, Greg's message was one of the very first that I ever read on Ecto. Anyway, I think I like the above Japan Times description of OOIOO better than the actual... uhh, music. I wasn't too impressed by the (self-titled) album I have now. OOIOO occupies the same artistic niche as the parent band, the Boredoms... indeed I'm not at all convinced I could tell the two projects' sound apart except that with OOIOO, all the shouting and screaming is female in origin. Also, OOIOO is somewhat less punk-rockish and more electronic. For me, this one, like the Boredoms, is good for a very occasional alternative listening experience. Repeated listens are bound to bring on a serious headache, though. Juha n.p. No, you'll probably lose all your money. Especially if you use a credit card. Not that there's a big security risk involved with credit card numbers (I haven't had any trouble - yet), but CD purchases over the Internet will become so easy that you'll get rid of your kroner in the blink of an eye... or at least in the time it takes for the credit card bill to arrive. You know, having bursts of violent temper, fits of euphoria, dancing wildly to The Jackson 5, and exhibiting other telltale signs of demon possession. Now, I think I've found just the thing that my friend needs to be cured. Going though educational material on the subject, I listened to Rasputina's "Christian Soldiers", which suggests a very, uhmm, enterological procedure for flooding the malevolent spirits out. Only, it seems my English vocabulary is failing me here, and despite my best attempts, I can't figure out exactly what type of brass vessel I'm supposed to use to create the purifying lavage. And as the lyrics to the 'song' are not included with the album, I can't check the written form of the word ("20-gallon brass ???") in a dictionary.
