She very strongly goes on about how people always compare her to Tori (they see estrogen and a piano, they think Tori, but I sound absolutely nothing like her [paraphrase]). I find it kind of amusing that so many talented women don't want any Tori comparisons. Seems to me that Sarah Slean, Pepper, and Margot O'Breslin sound strikingly like Ms. Amos, but also have a sound of their own. I don't think any of them are particularly derivative, but the similarities are unmistakable, and I don't think even insulting. In the past, I've found that those kind of similarities sound overwhelming on early listens, and fade into the background on later ones. I thought Tori sounded just like Kate when I first heard her, and now I can't see the similarity at all. The same with Happy, though the similarity hasn't faded as much. When I listen, I hear Happy, I don't hear shades of Kate. But that is what I heard at first. Pepper's page has a lot of added amusement. If you read it, you will learn that she is a genius in film and literature as well, having an unpublished great novel - the Gen X Catcher in the Rye (hey, that's what it says). I actually like her album, but the web site is so over the top that I don't think I'd have considered it if that was my introduction. neal np: Peter & Wendy (getting excited to see this in February!) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 6 Jan 99 09:15:17 EST From: ken@isis.ST.3Com.COM (Ken Descoteaux) Subject: Re: Message encoding - sorry, but can anyone help? My name has been invoked in Ecto!" :) ] Doug is sorely missed, and not just because he ran the Dubbing Project. Has anyone heard from him recently, or even not so re- cently? I'm still alive, kicking, and subscribed to Ecto. As Neile indicated, my life priorities have merely shifted -- completely of their own ac- cord. I probably was as surprised as anyone as music slid down (though not off) that list. I suspect that I may have been _too_ into music for for too long, and probably just needed some time off. I hope and sus- pect that it will once again climb back up that list someday. Ditto with life in cyberspace, though I doubt I ever will put anywhere near as much time into e-mail and browsing the Internet as I once did. I certainly can't complain about the things that have moved ahead of mu- sic and cyberspace in my life. I bought a wonderful old house two years ago and have not regretted it one iota -- not even when mailing off those once a month huge payments. :) With the house, I added two live- in companions -- my cats Giant and Mariner -- who are a constant joy. Add in friends and my hobbies of baseball and horse racing, and I can't complain. Well, I am struggling with a few personal problems, looking for a new job, and would like another friend or two, but, after all, this is Real Life (tm)! It will never be perfect, but I like the way mine is going. Before disappearing again, I would like to expand a bit on Vickie's de- scription of the tape dubbing project. Money did exchange hands, enough to cover my expenses of tapes, postage, and packaging. In fact, people could set up an "account" with a chunk of money, and then merely e-mail me an order for tapes, until the account is empty, when they could re- fill it again. I don't remember how long it lasted, but I would guess that the number of tapes and number of people who ordered both ap- proached about eighty when I called it quits. 'Twas quite a nice little system. In retrospect, I am surprised that it lasted as long as it did, but at its heart, it was a labor of love. Anyway, just wanted to let the dwindling number of people who remember when I was a more regular poster that I am still around, listening, and doing well! ["Dive! Dive! I'm cc'ing Matthew, Rod and Larry, who indicated that they're getting the digest. woj had the idea of having a mailing list for those on the digest who want to be notified right away. I think that's a great idea. I'll let him and Jeff work out the logistics of it. We didn't broadcast anything yesterday, btw. We had a lot of errands to run and other things to do because Chris is going to the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas and we had to do laundry, go to the store, and various other things. So...at 5:00pm (CST) I'll be playing a show from Dec. 30, 1989, which is a "Some of my favorite artists of the '80s" show. At 7:30pm (CST) I'll be playing a show from Dec. 23, 1989, called "Gaffa In My Soul" and when that's over I'll be repeating the earlier "Some of my favorite artists of the '80s" show. I'll post the playlist to both of these shows shortly. The mailing list woj was talking about can be useful to those even on loose mail. I feel like I'm taking up a lot of space here posting playlists and whatnot, and I'm sure those people who don't have the technology, or who just aren't interested are probably running out of patience with me. The "radio ecto" mailing list could be for anyone who wants to listen in and I could post the playlists there instead. It depends on what people want. I am playing the 80's show now (I popped it in as a test, and decided it was good enough quality to play), but will stop and re-wind to the beginning of the tape in a little while. If you hear any pure silence it would be because either 1) I'm re-winding (but when I do that I try to switch to a CD), 2) the thing has crashed (if it's us then it's just a matter of me re-booting which will take a couple of minutes, but if it's Jeff's server, I have to wait until it resets itself, which Chris said can take maybe 10-15 minutes, 3) something else has gone terribly wrong that I can't fix because Chris isn't available to help me. (He's sleeping now because he has an ungodly early flight to Las Vegas for the Consumer Electronics Show, and once he leaves he won't be back until Sunday or Monday.) I've made the forced switch from Maxell XLII-100s to 110s and haven't noticed any immediate difference in sound quality, though of course that may well change in the future as the tapes become older and more worn. It's a change that I wish hadn't been made, because I was perfectly happy with the 100 minute length (which was of course actually more like 104 minutes) and am worried about what these bonus minutes are going to end up costing in sound quality or tape life. One bright note has been that Maxell at least is still sticking in a few extra minutes of tape, which was one of the other things I was worried might change.
