Sarah McLachlan donated "I Will Remember You" to the AT&T holiday campaign - -- I think the AT&T donations are going to the Red Cross(?). (I could be cynical and mention how these corporate donations to charitable organizations which are laid out like "for every dollar you spend with us we'll pass along x teeny tiny amount" are total bullpuckey, because mostly the corporations in question are going to give a preset amount to the charitable organizations anyway, regardless of whether a million people buy their product or ten. It's just yet another marketing ploy. But since it's almost Christmas, I'll refrain. ;) Susan McKeown and BOWSIE were weird and wonderful at the Living Room tonight. I've often thought the Changelings exotic blending of styles is so much more than the "goth/darkwave" branding they've gotten themselves a bit pigeonholed into. When we got there at a little after 9pm the place looked packed, but fortunately John Henshon had saved us seats at his table up by the stage area. There was an act on when we got there, and she was mildly intriguing, but since I can't recall her name I guess there's not much point in attempting to say anything else about her. During the break between her set and the rest of the evening's festivities we were also joined by Don Keller, and of course Hillary and Sam were there as well. I saw Nick Hill wander through during part of the main set(s), but I guess he was too busy to stay, and Tom Neff was there for a time as well, though he left early. If I've left anyone who was there out I apologize. :) The performance basically consisted of three distinct parts, Susan's material, Gerry's material and the BOWSIE stuff, though there was some overlap between them. The combination of musicians varied from song to song, but the players were Susan on vocals, Gerry Leonard on guitars (and many electronic effects) and some vocals, Jon Spurney on guitar and harmonium, Jay on drums (I've forgotten his last name, but some of you may have seen him playing drums for Paula Cole on her last tour), some guy whose name I've completely forgotten on bass and a special appearance by Jimi Zhivago on piano (for one song). What I would describe as Susan's part of the show consisted simply of her and Jon (or for one song her and Jimi) doing some of her usual wonderful repertoire. I don't have a set list, but I know it included "Who Knows Where the Time Goes," "Fortune," and a few others. I guess this demonstrates why I usually try to grab a copy of the set list at her shows. Gerry's Leonard's part of the show consisted mainly of material from his CD _Spooky Ghosts_. It was basically guitar-based ambient with lots of effects, which is not something I'm really a fan of, but it was pretty good and occasionally interesting. The last part of the show was mainly the BOWSIE project. The basic idea seems to be traditional Irish songs combined with guitar-based ambient music. After reading previous descriptions of BOWSIE I was worried that I was going to hate it, but fortunately I didn't. Yes, I still prefer the traditional versions of the songs to the BOWSIE ones, but it was still quite enjoyable. Of special note was Susan's song "River," which I had heard a few times before with various incarnations of The Chanting House. I gather that the arrangement we heard was similar to the one that will appear on the upcoming _Ripples of Hope_ CD in February, and it was easily my favorite part of the BOWSIE section of the show. Overall it was a fun evening, and well worth the long trek down to NYC. Of course, the shows Susan is involved in always are. Especially impressive was the fact that due to touring constraints (Susan with Natalie Merchant and Gerry and Jay with Duncan Sheik) there was only time for about an hour and a half of rehearsal for this show. Speaking of music divas in film, I also recently read that Melissa Etheridge will *not* play Janis Joplin in a film version of Janis' life that was practically guaranteed to be a Melissa E. vehicle. Hmmm...now it's open for grabs and the producers are searching for a substitute to play Janis. This guy, that guy who took umbrage at my wanting the network executives to die a slow, nasty horrible death because I didn't think we'd be able to get the Saturday Night Live with Kate (we did get it after all) has taken his flame war against satellite dishes into e-mail, but he's *still* harping on my wanting him to "die." Funny that there's talk of love-hounds here of late ... after sitting in O'Hare this morning skimming through the last month's worth of love-hounds Digests and finally deleting the lot mostly unread, I've finally decided that sentimental value just ain't gonna cut it any more. I'm unsubbing after 9+ years. It's kind of like a divorce. rec.music.gaffa was my introduction to online music fandom, the place where I discovered that no, I really wasn't the only person on the planet who was nuts over the music of Kate Bush. I was a sophomore in college and had just discovered this thing called the Internet, and I was completely and utterly amazed at what I found whenever I went into the campus computing center to check in. People who loved the same music I did, who gave me ideas for my own radio show (Vickie's weekly Suspended In Gaffa playlists were like a bible to me). I heard about people named Sarah McLachlan, Jane Siberry, and a newcomer called Tori Amos for the first time. Oh yeah, and the name Happy Rhodes got bandied about quite a bit too. And through all of that, I started exchanging e-mail, then tapes with a cool guy named woj from Clarkson. I don't think I need to elaborate on how that turned out. :) It's been a long time since ecto replaced Love-Hounds as the prime source for fascinating musical discussion in my life, but I've kept hanging on, hoping against hope that one day .gaffa will become useful again. I think it's time to face reality -- unless KaTe comes out with another album, which is increasingly less likely, Love-Hounds is going to just continue spewing forth 30k chunks of adolescent vitriol into my mailbox each day, to pile up until I have the stomach to skim through it all again. And even if a new album does appear, I'm skeptical that the situation over there is going to improve. If there's any important KaTe news posted over there, someone please forward the news here. That's all I've been hanging in for anyway. +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | U.S.A.
