Hmpfh! AR Kane! You're putting me in a nostalgia mood now! I agree with yer "Hmpfh"...I think it took me so long to warm up to Massive Attack's "Mezzanine" because I have two old friends, twin brothers who live in L.A. of all places (you'd assume they'd have "connections"), who were doing very much the same thing as Massive 15 years ago. I've still got their vinyl to prove it...and unfortunately, they're sitting on boxes of that vinyl still, in their garages. So, let me repeat, "Humpfh". I'd also like to add that "there oughta be a law". ;-) Now for brighter news, former Cocteau member Liz Fraser is going to be making a solo record with a '99 release. The deal is still very new & I don't have more details, but I'll certainly post more when I have it. Robin and Simon will be working on something together in '99, and I already posted that Simon is doing some stuff with Anneli Drecker. Folks who want to check out Simon and Robin's label can get news by visiting www.bellaunion.com, although not all their involvements are handled via Bella Union (for example, one of my '97 faves which I didn't acquire til '98 but could easily place in my "top ten" is Billy Mackenzie's posthumous album, "Beyond the Sun", which Simon co-produced. Billy was the former lead singer and songwriter for one of my fave 80's bands, the Associates.) That's it for now from Cocteau-land! Carol PS. One last thing...I never think of Cocteau Twins as "specialized", or more so than Happy, anyway. If they were so specialized I don't think some of their songs like "Bluebeard" or this time of year "Winter Wonderland" would be making it into that music mix they pipe into soundsystems in department stores. (Oh, the horror!) Btw, my fave band for a dozen plus years til they broke up was Cocteau Twins...how convenient of them to leave a "fave artist" space in my heart and soul for Happy to move into! :-) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Dec 1998 15:37:58 -0600 From: "Mike Mendelson" Subject: fun fun fun till moxy took the fruvous away Lots of very entertaining stuff from charley summed up here in one fruvous swoop: >So anyway. >To reiterate, MF definitely has a loyal following of serious fans, but >I do not share their enthusiasm. It grabs the listener. I think that even those that don't like it would probably have to admit that when they first heard MWABT, it is one song that demanded to be be noticed... and remembered. I've played MWABT for a few people who are not familiar with Happy's music. As their tastes are more mundane - er- mainstream than, say, an ecto subscribers, I watch them as they listen. They seem initially impressed and interested, but their typical mainstream short attention span kicks in, and they'll begin to chat more than listen, or find something to read, or lapse into a coma, or something. Proof invariably pulls their attention back to the music. I think there's a lesson here relevant to the recent musings on stardom, popularity, making music for a living, etc. Proof should have been (and still could be) the single from MWABT. It can draw people to the music. Learning the depth of that artist's ouvre is, of course, left as an exercise to the listener (and hopefully, buyer). And for future reference - although Happy is certainly not one to rehash tried formulas in her work - the style, the feel, the punch, the grab of a song like Proof is worth revisiting. Not a whole album's worth, of course, but there is commercial appeal in the dance mix beat that Proof, more than any other HR piece, offers. This is the kind of tune that a lot of people could like a lot. I've mentioned before here how I think the David Bowie influence is real strong in Proof. At the Troy show, Happy mentioned Bowie in her (brief) intro to this song. I think she said "This song is inspired by David Bowie" but I'm not sure I heard "is inspired by" or something else. Anyone with > better ears and/or memory know? I wasn't there, but yes, I do hear the Bowie influence, now that you mention it. Not derivative of Bowie, but definitely inspiration there, from Bowie's later, funky-beat era. Not that there's any influence on Happy here, but it flashed into my mind that throughout MWABT I hear glimmers of synthesized effects reminiscent (to me at least) of what Mark Clifford has done with Seefeel and with Cocteau Twins during their last days recording and touring. (Mark also joined CT on the Milk and Kisses tour.) I love his sound, and I like Seefeel a whole lot...so this is probably another reason why MWABT grabbed me instantaneously and is my top pick for '98. "Good music to space out to and occasionally groove to" seems like faint praise to me. Do you like it? Is it too soon to tell? You're right that there were a few mentions of it a while back (seems like August, maybe?), and a whole bunch of us immediately bopped over to peopletree.com and listened to the samples that were available. From the response afterward on ecto, this would seem to be one of those relatively rare occurences where an artist made a huge mistake in making samples available online before the album's release -- there were a *lot* of ectophiles who would have rushed out to buy a new Milla album sound-unheard, who listened to the samples online and said, "Ugh, we'll just stick with the good album." From what I recall of the samples, *this* was the music that people should have been referring to when they kept calling Tori's BfP "masturbatory." jeff (wondering if, indeed, the recent Milla album did turn out to be worthwhile...) np: mwabt. just finished, _tidal_. mwabt wins hands down, of course, but _tidal_'s groovy nonetheless. and I *like* fiona's voice. - -- |Jeffrey C. Last week I picked up a Kristen Hersh single called The Holy Single that contains Jesus Christ, Amazing Grace, Sinkhole, Can The Circle Be Unbroken. Jesus Christ is a Big Star cover that was also covered by Voice of the Beehive on their first disc, and probably others too. When I was shopping I saw but didn't buy the 2 Tori import Spark singles ($10 a pop). One of them had a version of Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas on it. Dzintars, a Russian(?) vocal ensemble that is stunningly beautiful has these songs (Christmas Masquerade (Mummery Song) and Oi Hanuke) on their fine album songs of amber (on Ryko). Winter, Fire & Snow: Songs for the Holiday Season (Atlantic) is practically the sampler you are looking for. Course, you could probably cut out half of it, whatever your tastes are. But it does have Are You Burning Little Candle (Jane Siberry), December 24th (Julia Fordham) and the lovely title cut by Anuna. Most of these are available in other places. Count Your Blessings by Jane Siberry, Mary Margaret O'Hara, Holly Cole and Victoria Williams is also chock full of holiday fun (as is Jane's Child). Christmas by Lori Carson on Where It Goes.
