Or have I just earned myself an expulsion from Ecto?! :-) No, you're not going to get expelled. There are other people here who aren't really fans, and they stay because of the diversity in tastes and information that pours through this list. The only "requirement" for a non-Happy fan here is to always keep in mind that this *is* a Happy Rhodes mailing list and that there's bound to be a lot of talk about Happy at times (never enough for a lot of people, but there you go). Never have I seen a non-Happy fan complain about too much Happy talk, but it could happen, you never know. That and deliberately trashing Happy would be, I'd imagine, the only things that would get a non-Happy fan flamed off the list. So, don't worry about it, welcome, and enjoy all the non-Happy topics. You can just delete the Happy stuff. Having said that, I will throw out my dignity and get down on my knees, clutch my hands together and BEG BEG BEG you to open up "The Keep" and listen to it once, maybe twice, before you get rid of it. It's so completely different from MWABT as to be from another planet. It's quiet, acoustic, gorgeous and soothing. If you listen to it, and you don't like it either, then I wouldn't try to get you into Happy again, but please, please, please, open it up and listen to it. Just once. Please? If you don't like The Keep *I'll* buy it from you, opened. I'll buy your MWABT too. Criticism is fine as long as you give the artist a fair shot. I don't believe 3 listens is a fair shot, let alone once, for any artist that composes music that has more than the 3 basics chords that some people give up on when it goes to four. I believed I said to you that the cd's i've gotten bored with quickly are the ones I like right off the back. The ones that I like the longest are the ones that are a little more complicated to absorb. But...I definitely don't share your opinion about Happy's music, especially MWABT, which is a masterpiece in my opinion. I consider it very much a concept album...when I first listened to it, I thought of that scene in Star Wars where a bunch of aliens are in a bar, there's an alien musical combo playing for folks, and all sorts of characters conversing about this and that, drinking strange brews and telling tall tales. Then I imagine that Happy is sitting quietly in a corner, observing, listening, and jotting notes into a journal which later evolves into the story-songs on "Many Worlds". This cd blows my mind...and in turn it has blown the minds of friends and e-pals of mine whom I've introduced to Happy via this cd. Many of these people are more into electronica than folk/acoustic...and since I knew what they liked already, I knew which friends to focus on when I wanted to share my excitement about MWABT. On the flip side, with friends who like the more folky/acoustic side of things, I definitely recommend "The Keep", which is actually my second fave Happy record (and then my third is "Rhodesongs", which is a really well-conceived compilation of pre-MWABT/Keep/Colossus material.) So...I would encourage you to listen to "The Keep"...and if you find you don't like that one either, then pass it along to a friend who likes wonderful voice with an "unplugged" backdrop. Tis the season of giving...and I'm sure you have a friend or relative who would like Happy. (I turned my brother George onto Happy on a whim pretty much...he's mostly a jazz buff with maybe 10,000 cds all up and down and across the walls of his listening room. Yet when he listened to the sampler tape I made, he was well pleased and now he owns 4 Happy cds!) I guess that's it...I hope you don't feel you shouldn't have posted. And I hope you'll tear that shrinkwrap off "The Keep" and give it a spin or two. Hey, it's got a Christmas song...tis the season after all! :-) Ciao for now, Carol ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Dec 1998 10:47:05 -0500 From: Paul Kim Subject: cowboy junkies with OTR in boston january, sinead lohan too According to this week's Boston Phoenix, tickets for both the Cowboy Junkies with OTR at the Roxy on January 13th and Sinead Lohan at the Somerville Theater on the 27th of Jan go on sale today through ticketlickers...er master... I hate to see anyone judge Happy by MWABT. I agree with you, I respect it but don't particularly like it. (excuse me ectophiles if this is blasphemy, it hurts to say, but is true.) I do however love every single one of Happy's other Albums. The Keep was my intro to Happy Rhodes and I loved it the moment I heard it. It is sort of the Happy Rhodes unplugged album, and lacks the overpowering electronic gimikry which, I think, was the thing I most disliked about MWABT. the songs on The Keep are also just all around better in my opinion. Please try The Keep before making any final judgements about Happy. My two cents worth. - -Matt np: The Nields, Play ***...Relurking*** ____________________________________________________________________ Get free e-mail and a permanent address at http://www.netaddress.com/?N=1 ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Dec 1998 12:29:10 -0800 From: Eponine Subject: Re: A confession: I don't like Happy! Hi Vickie - Thanks for writing! - And thanks to everyone else who wrote, too! - Almost everyone said the same thing you said, that I should definitely unwrap and listen to 'The Keep', that I should not judge Happy's music by 'Many Worlds Are Born Tonight' alone. In fact several people were quite passionate about it!! And, since I liked the very first song I ever heard by Happy Rhodes - mistakenly thinking it was Kate Bush - I WILL, darn it!! I WILL tear off that shrinkwrap and listen to 'The Keep'!! In fact I'll do it tonight. The way y'all have described the music on that particular album has rather whetted my appetite, so to speak, and now I am very intrigued indeed. I had a feeling that maybe MWABT was not "typical", because it didn't sound anything like the one song I heard by her on the car radio that one time. (Not that an artist has to sound the same all the time, of course. But very few artists successfully jump genres. Yo-Yo Ma has jumped from classical to jazz and bluegrass, and rather successfully, but I digress.) Thanks for the feedback, everyone. And sorry to those who did want to buy my 'The Keep' CD off me - I'm gonna keep it and listen to it. Love and regards to all o' ya, Eponine P.S. Not one single person e-mailed me to say, "Get the hell off of the Ecto list!" and for that I salute you all! It is an opportunity OTR can't pass up. OTR regrets calling the tour off and wishes everyone a Happy Holiday Season. I think someone forwarded this news to ecto when it was first released.
