K Rawlings, Name This Paper Charlottetown, PEI, Canada "One of the most genuinely innovative...musicians in Canada... seethes with honest conviction and musical rewards." Larry LeBlanc, Billboard, November 26 1994 "She has a deep poetic understanding of how the world works and the poetic imagination necessary to put her world view across. One of the most arresting lyricists in popular music." I've never even heard of "The New Gidget" - was that on Nickelodeon or something? Well, you asked how I happened to hear of Lili Haydn. The truth is this: I have NEVER heard of Lili Haydn; I confess I bought the CD because of the cover!! Oh it is horrible to confess that!! The handful of times in my life that I've done that I've been - naturally - very disappointed. But the cover art of her CD 'Lili' just really "spoke to me", as it were. I saw this striking artwork, and this woman holding a violin, and her look, and the style of the artwork, and the fact that she is - obviously - a violinist yet was in the "Rock" section at the record store just reached out and said, "I'm really unique - buy me!", so I did! I am just completely slayed by this CD. I actually wrote to her at lili@atlantic-records.com and received a reply about four days later. It wasn't from her, but from someone who said, "Lili appreciates your kind words, blah, blah, blah..." I don't like that. If she's gonna include her e-mail address in the liner notes the least she can do is answer her e-mail herself, dammit!! But I guess I'll overlook the slight just this once! I wonder what these words really mean: "...will we ever understand the reason we were chosen obligations for the seventh day of our creation..." I guess that, within the context of the rest of that song ("Someday"), she's acknowledging the fact that her life has been fortunate in many ways and also acknowledging that we don't know why the suffering in this life is spread around so arbitrarily and so unevenly. Well, gee, I didn't mean to get to heavy on you there, Dave! Thanks for answering! What an amazing collection of songs, both musically and in the power of their delivery and message. Yes, the political songs are didactic, and if I read the lyrics alone I would be annoyed by their hectoring tone--but the delivery is so stunning. Some of the most haunting, compelling tunes I have ever heard. Again it's not easy listening--much of it is harsh, but still beautiful. Listening to this is an experience. You might hate it, you might love it, but it's unlikely to leave you cold. Anyone who has found Kathleen Yearwood's work interesting previously--this is a must have. Anyone who is interested in a what it might be like if Diamanda Galas sang traditional folk and political folk songs with higher, operatic-almost vocals with dynamic guitar work and strange background accompanient, well, you have GOT to hear this. It's harrowing listening hour again at my house. - --Neile - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Neile Graham ..... http://www.sff.net/people/neile ..... neile@sff.net The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music .... http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 8 Dec 1998 20:49:19 -0500 From: Paul Blair Subject: Rachel Sage in NY Guess I wasn't paying attention when the Arlene Grocery dates were posted a few weeks ago, but in case anybody else didn't notice either, Rachel Sage will be playing at Arlene Grocery this Friday Dec. 11th at 8pm. (John Henshon, where were >you?) I was very distressed at not being able to be there, and unhappy as well that I'll be shut out of Susan's thing with Ms. Merchant. Susan told me that the first night was already sold out when I was blown away by her performance at St Ann's. She did mention that they might add a second show. Tickets for that when off while I was out in California. My sole consolation may end up being the Living Room show. Not real happy to hear Chris wasn't on board. I shared a pew with him at the St Ann's Poe tribute and I was heartened by his telling me that while Lindsay was living in Brussels, he didn't give up his apartment in New York. Two of the highlights of the Sandy Denny show were Sloan Wainwright's "Next Time Around" and Susan's brilliant "Tam Lin". I'd heard Susan do that tune previously but that nights performance was a punch in the gut. She soared ! With Susan's vocals, Peter Holsapple's arrangement, and the Continental Drifters dramatic execution (at the risk of tipping my age) it was one of the few moments that night I was transported back to having seen Denny herself with Fairport Convention rip up the stage with that number. The Emily Dickinson song/poem Meredith mentioned, Susan premiered in front of Chuck and Joe up in Pawling not too long back and I'd agree it's very tastey indeed. Meredith also mentioned Merrie Amsterberg who I recently had the pleasure of seeing in a showcase at Spiral. If ever she comes your way do be sure to go and see her, she puts on a terrific show. When I asked her about the infrequency of her runs through New York she did say she'd love to reprise her appearance at Fez with Susan. Some of the things Chris mentioned he'd gotten involved in that have kept from Chanting recently sound intriguing, got to keep my eyes open to see if he does anything local down the road. His Mrs worked both the Poe thing and the Sandy Denny shows and was smashing both nights. A lot of the musical accompaniment at the Poe show was less than effective but Michelle's work that night was a glowing exception. Her style was ideally suited to the spookiness of the night. I'd have loved to see her interact with the late mad cellist Tom Cora, what a pair they'd have made. The slopes of Heavenly were just that, but truth be told I'd have preferred seeing Susan sing anytime. Just to throw in a little Happy content, one of the highlights of my trip out west, silly as it might sound, was cranking up Ra on the phones while plying a blood red sea of clouds beneath a cobalt canopy in one of Boeing's flying machines. The bit of Rolls Royce roar that creeped in the cans and shook my fanny provided a demented counterpoint to the music. Too bad you can't open the windows and Northwest airlines stoutly refused to strap me to the wing for the journey. Damn. Hey Happy fans, Tony Matern, Carol Coney and I are in the discussion stage of starting up a new fanzine for Happy. Details will be forthcoming, but give us a bit of time to get everthing in place and you'll be the first to know what they are. If anyone else was thinking about taking up where Terra left off, write and let us know what you had in mind and maybe we can work something out. We can always use help. Poor Sharon had to do everything herself, and we're going to try to avoid taking paths like that that will lead to burnout. Rhodeways/Terra Incognita was one of a kind, and we hope we can do justice to the standard that Sharon has already set. I'll always treasure my copies of her work (and urge people to send away for back issues from Sharon while they're still available) and we all thank her for her willingness to answer our questions and give us details about putting together a fanzine that she had to learn on her own. We have Happy's blessing for the new fanzine and she will participate whenever she can. Her time is more limited now than it has been so I'm afraid we won't be able to compete with Terra Incognita in regards to Happy's participation, but we'll do what we can. We're going to need submissions and material, but not until we actually start putting together issues. If anyone has any ideas, write and let us know. I'm working on updating the Happy Rhodes Encyclopedia (a wonderful project put together by Klaus Kluge that was lost until recently) and there's a wealth of old material in it. That's it for now. More later as details start gelling. (We haven't decided on a name yet. Maybe Collective Heart.) Vickie ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V4 #428 **************************
