You should have listened to me a year ago......hee-hee! ;-) Make sure you get Deanna's previous album, "Mariana Trench," too. She also has a live album (lots of jazz covers), which is more difficult to find unless you buy it at one of her shows. I just called Glass Note Records, who put out the Eden A.K.A. single "Not Your Enemy," and they told me the Eden A.K.A. album will be out in February and that they got a deal with Columbia. So that gives us something to look forward to in '99! I don't know if it came out in other countries yet, but I talked to Eden A.K.A. at Lilith and they said they had a good international distribution deal, so it should be available all over. :) Rachel ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 7 Dec 1998 14:10:43 -0500 (EST) From: Michael Colford Subject: Holly Cole's Treasure! Period. > > Enough writ. > > Philip David > 12/6/1998 I have a feeling you're misunderstanding me, so let me explain. I don't think superstardom is a "must" or that it proves greatness or anything...but it's not necessarily an evil thing. It's what "stars" do...or don't do...with their fortunes that matters. Jane seems like a good, kind, righteous person, and I doubt she'd let fame and fortune affect her persona *or* her art. I recently had an e-pal send me his top 5 records of '98 (ironically this is the person who first turned me on to Happy's music) and his top record of '98 is Tori's most recent, so he said to me "After all, she's the ultimate rock goddess!" Well, what's that supposed to mean? Should I like her just because she's a rock icon now? Or should I like her based on the merit of her music and what that music offers *me*? And furthermore, if Jane achieves the success of a Tori or a Bjork, is that a bad thing? Just so long as her artistic vision remains exciting, pure and true, I don't care, in fact, I'm happy for Jane or anyone who's really creative, if they sell the "xxxxxx" amount of units (and magazine covers, and mtv and radio play, etc) that contribute to "superstar" (or "goddess") status. It's such a fluke when really great artists reap financial reward, that frankly, I'm glad to see these folks grab it when they can. What I get tired of are so-called fans who like to keep their musical "finds" secrets so they'll continue to do intimate shows in small venues just like the fans like...and meanwhile, their so-called fave artists are stuggling to make ends meet, finance tours, get any kind of press attention. Often they can't even fill up a damn living room with fans and possible fans. I'm tired of so-called fans who borrow cds from friends and libraries and make tapes of the entire cds, rather than purchase and support the artist's work. (I recently got an email from someone who said he borrowed Jane's "The Walking" from the Dallas Library and he regretted he didn't get to make a tape of it...I told *him* what I thought of *that*!) I frankly don't get it...when so-called fans want to keep their faves on some cult-favorite pedestal, like some precious little secret just for them, so they can somehow gratify their own egos about how good *their* taste is while the rest of the world has sucky taste. So the cult-faves, the October Projects, the Cocteau Twins, etc etc break up because they couldn't even reach a million seller...so their labels tire of them hanging on. Not even once in a 15 year career did CT sell a million records, much less gain superstar status...yet AP magazine named them one of the 100 most influential bands in rock history. And now people rip off their sound for cotton commercials and such on tv. That to me is what *really* sucks...not superstardom. All this reminds me of Saturday night, when I was driving around looking for a parking space, and listening to HFS' live broadcast of their annual holiday concert. Hole was playing at the moment (and cussing an awful lot, as if it would get _them_ in trouble, rather than the radio station), and between songs, someone apparently pulled the "WE LOVE YOU COURTNEY" tori-esque bullshit, to which Love responded, "What do you mean you love me? You don't even know me! I can be a real BITCH." It was a lovely moment. Why doesn't Tori do this? jeff ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 7 Dec 1998 18:24:47 -0600 (CST) From: "Mitchell A.
