Lili Haydn is awesome! I almost heard her open up for Fates Warning in Seattle a year ago but I was standing out side waiting for my friend. I didn't know who she was but I could almost make out that something cool was happening. Then the same line up concert from Boston ( or some where ) was broadcast on the internet. I was impressed and even madder at my friend for making me miss such a good new act. Then I bought the CD and fell in love with her music. Then I bought several more copies as Christmas presents to give out. Then last summer I was at the Page / Plant concert at the Gorge in WA state. I had no idea who was opening. GUESS WHO IT WAS????? Yup, it was LILI! I was so totally pleased!!!!! What a great show and the songs came off even more agressive than on the CD. I met her after her performance and mumbled something probably stupid and incoherrant! ;-) She was very polite, kind, and very appeciative of all the fans, not to mention stunningly beautiful! I look forward to any new recordings or performances by her with great anticipation! I'm glad you found her! :-) John L Rice ImJohn@worldnet.att.net .......I play drums. http://www.ImJohn.com/TheMakedonians/MaksMain.htm >I just stumbled across the phenomenal Lili Haydn and her CD 'Lili' three >days ago. From Entertainment Weekly Online: **If listening to Alanis Morissette's latest album, "Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie," gave you a hankering to write your own songs, take note: The Alanis Morissette Lyric Generator (at www.brunching.com) allows Net surfers to punch in a laundry list of things they hate, the names of ex-significant others, and a few other details to produce their very own, custom-made song lyrics in the key of Morissette. Alanis wannabes can pick from three different song titles: "Why," "I Think" and "Will to Live." Each one offers its own unique rant against the injustices of the universe. The generator is the brain child of David Neilsen, who was inspired after buying Morissette's new album. "After I listened to it, I thought she should pay me for a therapy session," says Neilsen. "It's just one, long catharsis." It seems that a number of listeners have looked to the website for a catharsis of their own. "I tried to download the submissions the other day and my machine crashed because the file was too big," says Neilsen. "We've gotten a very large response, easily over 15,000 entries just yesterday. We've tapped into some huge anti-Alanis feeling." Some of the enthusiasm has been generated by morning radio jocks who have discovered the program and raved about it over the air. While Neilsen has yet to hear from Morissette or representatives for the singer, he hasn't given up hope that she'll eventually read between the lines of his poison pen Mad Lib. "I want to say to her, 'Get over it and move on,'" says Neilsen. "If I could have just one result from this, it would be that Alanis would say, 'Hmm, maybe I will just get over it.'" --Liane Bonin** Have fun! Jill ;D ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 6 Dec 1998 10:17:19 -0500 (EST) From: "Donald G. Keller" Subject: Mankin, Haydn, etc. So I went and looked at the Mercury Lounge schedule (noting that I will most likely attend Elysian Fields tonight, Babe the blue OX/Leah Andreone tomorrow, and Seam/Poem Rocket next Saturday), and examined the bill for the show headlined by Nina Mankin whom several here have endorsed. The other three performers (earliest to latest) are Jessica Craven, Jennie Stearns, and Leslie Nuchow. Anyone here know anything about any of them? Comparisons? I just had Lili Haydn's album out yesterday myself; I think it's first-rate. I posted here on ecto a few months ago a review of her Mercury Lounge show which I thought was just excellent, and I'm hoping for another chance to see her live one of these days. The thing that impresses me about the album is that it's a "pop" album while at the same time showing off (appropriately) her classical chops as composer and performer. (She's played with one of the big L.A. orchestras.) The last track, a =faux=-Baroque chaconne, is one of my favorite tracks; and though most of the songs have really strong pop hooks, I'm just as likely to remember the classical instrumental breaks. Sounds like I could live without that Hackett-redoes-Genesis album (though the thought of Colin Blunstone--singer for the Zombies--doing "For Absent Friends" is intriguing, and since "I Know What I Like" was never a favorite, redoing it in some other style might actually be fun). "Fountain of Salmacis" was a huge favorite of mine as well, and I wouldn't take too kindly to its being ruined. n.p. Thinking Plague, =In This Life=. (For all you progressive fans. An American band; this album is a compilation of recordings dating back to 1982, rereleased on CD in 1989. There's a new album from a slightly-different lineup. They're kind of a cross between Henry Cow and Univers Zero.) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 6 Dec 1998 09:24:16 EST From: Riphug@aol.com Subject: Fwd: Newsletter #20 This is a multi-part message in MIME format. - --part0_912954257_boundary Content-ID: <0_912954257@inet_out.mail.aol.com.1> Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII I don't know how many of you already subscribe to this singer/songwriter newsletter, but I decided to pass it along to you......just in case..... It feels more true and honest and no-frills." Apparently, Jane meant her label's operations, something we've known since last year. There's a real problem when, pushed by deadline constraints, one starts quoting out of context. > Which leads to my question: would she *really* mind > being a superstar, if it could be completely > on her own terms...even on her label? What's wrong > with being a superstar, if you live a righteous > life on the money you need and give a big bunch of > dough away (like R.E.M. does)? Or is she just so > jaded by experience with a major label that she > never would consider going that route again? Wouldn't be the first time... only I don't think "jaded" would be the word. "Weary" would be more like it. Couldn't blame her. I'd blame Time Warner, though, again for reasons we already know. Frankly, this "superstar" s**t really annoys me. For me, celebrity has _nothing_ to do with the music, which has to be judged on its own terms. Again, it's something everyone on this list (or any other quality music list) would understand. If you can't stand listening to it over the tannoy system at work or elsewhere, no amount of sudden PR bursts (much of using the how-the-"artiste"-is-really-a-lot-like-you- and-me spin & dry tactic) can save it. I don't think of Jane Siberry - or any other fave of mine - as a superstar, but as a musician. Period. Enough writ. Just got back from my first time seeing Maria McKee (even though I've been a fan since her Lone Justice days) at the Tin Angel in Philly and I have to say it was incredible! I've never heard such a strong, pure voice before.. her voice was excellent, the sound was great too, which surprised me as it was rather dismal when I saw Grey Eye Glances there a while back. The setup was a trio, Maria played acoustic guitar, electric on a few songs, and piano, her new fiancé played bass, an upright bass that he bowed on several songs, and a lap steel, and the other guy played guitar and keyboard. She looked great, plain white blouse and black pants, long hair in a ponytail that hung over her shoulder, not much makeup other than pale lipstick.. toned down quite a bit from what she's been known for in the past. She played a nice mix of old and new material (she's working on a new CD) and I quite enjoyed the stripped down versions of the Life is Sweet songs. She also mentioned that the Dixie Chicks had recorded one of her songs on their album, which apparently is helping her finance her work since she's still without a label. My only complaints are it was a pretty short show (about an hour) and I didn't see any merchandise like t-shirts for sale.. on another note.. almost time for the old end of year top ten lists.. I've already found my pick for #1, Nichole Nordeman.
