(I think) If you haven't heard Deanna Kirk sing and you happen to live in the NYC area, keep this in mind (from Deanna's: newyork.sidewalk): **Deanna's 107 Rivington St (Between Essex and Ludlow Sts) New York, NY (212) 420-2258 Buzz: A second coming for the down-home jazz bar whose original East Village location was closed by an electrical fire. Who: Deanna Kirk, chanteuse and proprietor of the previous Deanna's. When: End of December (1998) Look: Originally a 1920s-era Yiddish theater, this space has seen several incarnations, most notably a sausage-smoking house. Kirk's renovation hasn't erased the site's old-world charm, and antique gems like a 100-year-old bar and Kirk's mother's classic Steinway have been added. Many fixtures, like the art deco iron doors, were purchased directly from the Landmarks Preservation Commission. Food: Hearty, no-frills bistro fare, with free Wednesday afternoon teas for the local elderly. Crowd: Much like the previous Deanna's, the new joint promises to attract a mixture of old and young jazz aficionados as well as the gaggle of old-school Harlem jazz musicians Kirk has befriended throughout her career as a performer. Look for many of these veterans to appear onstage alongside Deanna, who will sing most nights (except Sunday brunch, when her mom does a killer Edith Piaf set).** I hope to get up there sometime this winter. Deanna's a really sweet person and a wonderful performer! Jill :D ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 04 Dec 1998 09:24:04 -0600 From: S Nichols Subject: Y'all... When you are listening to the Corrs, you get women, and you get a song. It didn't strike me as a feminist statement so much as a marketing gimmick. Certainly the track list doesn't look all that radical. I guess it might be cool for someone to buy it and discover Sarah Slean, but it doesn't look to have too much of interest on it to me. Maybe I'd buy it to have another copy of Who Will Save Your Soul? :/ neal np: Storm of Drones ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 4 Dec 1998 13:08:50 -0500 (EST) From: Jeff Burka Subject: Re: Women and Songs 2 compilation neal sez: > Certainly the track list doesn't look all that radical. Maybe I'd buy it > to have another copy of Who Will Save Your Soul? :/ Yeah, when I first read the post, I thought the track list looked pretty appalling. But the post _did_ say that it's a new recording of Sarah Slean's "I Know" (could that song get any more beautiful? ), which makes me wonder if maybe some of the other tracks, which seem like they fit into the "Yeah, like I need another copy" category, might also be fresh recordings. I'd think about buying it for the Sarah Slean track, but that's probably as far as I'd get... jeff np: nothing, 'cause _Rearmament_ just ended and I haven't decided what's next. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 4 Dec 1998 11:42:42 -0700 (MST) From: Neal Copperman Subject: Re: Women and Songs 2 compilation On Fri, 4 Dec 1998, Jeff Burka wrote: > > Yeah, when I first read the post, I thought the track list looked pretty > appalling. But the post _did_ say that it's a new recording of Sarah > Slean's "I Know" (could that song get any more beautiful? ), I wondered how Sarah S. got on there at all. Any ideas? I was tempted to say the whole thing was full of dreck, but that's not even really true. It's just largely very unimaginative. If they were going to use Jewel, at least they could have taken something from the new album. Half of it plays like a K-Tel collection, and half might be kind of fresh to some consumers. Maybe they felt they needed the really obvious songs to lure people in? I was just hoping that the Sarah Slean song would show up on something else. Like maybe her first major release? neal still playing: Storm of Drones (it just goes on and on and on) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 04 Dec 1998 15:12:11 -0800 From: "C. K. Coney" Subject: Good Jane Siberry Preview in AJC There's a really nice preview of tonight's concert in the Atlanta paper...unfortunately, their website is almost as bad as the paper & doesn't have much content, mostly ads, so I can't direct ya to this Jane preview, since I can't find it on the web. And my scanner will tear newsprint to shreds. However, I'll give ya highlights of the Weekend Preview article "Weird is OK; just listen to this bunch" (which also highlights upcoming shows by David Allan Coe and also the band Belloluna). They start the article saying "We'll always have a special place in our hearts for the eccentrics. Those unpredictable zanies, who through their music, their personalities or both, confound us as often as they amaze. Two nationally acclaimed quirky birds and a deliciously adventurous local group add a welcome dash of the unknown to this weekend's concert calendar." "Her soaring, vaguely dissonant voice seems about to leap into a yodel at any moment. Her songs are marked by complex chorus and verse structures...She plans her business and artistic decisions around the alignment of the planets. Needless to say, ...Jane Siberry...has always been a little outside the mainstream." Then they go on to give specifics about the upcoming show, they have some quotes from Jane, give her sheeba url (yay!), and give a little of herstory from Warner Bros to Sheeba. The photo is nice, but the odd little cut-line says "Canadian singer-songwriter Jane Siberry isn't keen on achieving superstar status". I guess they make this assumption from Jane saying in the interview: "I'd really rather keep things small. It feels more true and honest and no-frills." Which leads to my question: would she *really* mind being a superstar, if it could be completely on her own terms...even on her label? What's wrong with being a superstar, if you live a righteous life on the money you need and give a big bunch of dough away (like R.E.M. does)? Or is she just so jaded by experience with a major label that she never would consider going that route again? I haven't read any other interviews so I haven't a clue to the answer to the above. Any opionions out there? I got her CD and there is a song on it called "Full Moon" which left me shaking my head in disbelief, it's so fantastic! The drums are very tribal, with excellent guitar and vocals. I'm not good at describing music or who to compare her with, so here's an article from The Rotten Apple: About Nina Mankin's CD "Slow That Pony Down, Girl": From "The Rotten Apple," Fall, 1998: "...What a relief to hear that this female singer/songwriter steps out from the limited bounds of such femme performers as Shawn "Sunny Came Home" Colvin and Natalie Imbruglia, with a catchy groove, confident and expressive vocals and solid instrumentation. Any female singer in this category stands the test of being compared to the venerable Ani DiFranco and Nina Mankin stands up well. Her EP, SLOW THAT PONY DOWN< GIRL, strikes like a mature DiFranco with a wide musical range, and a folksy base with a rock flavor. She has spent her recent time playing the club circuit around our fine city exposing crowds to her infectious music of which her next NYC show will be [December 9th at 10pm], at the Mercury Lounge. Might be agood idea to get advanced tickets since she seems destined to make a name for herself" - --Thomas Wengelewski Check her out!
