There are 3 singles, but I don't think they'll >be available. I can't remember if I've mentioned this before, but to all you Imogen fans, If you can find it, the "Shine" single is absolutely brilliant. Apart from the a-side, you get "Aeroplane", a nice, airy, upbeat tune which is vaguely drum'n'bass and has some of her sweetest vocals. However, its the other two b-sides which confirmed Imogen in my mind as a potential goddess. "Wireless" is an epic eight-minute instrumental (excepting a bit of wordless background wailing here and there), which is, in my mind, truly revolutionary, though I'm probably the only person to think so. A seamless mix of classical, ambient, jazz, dance and hip-hop, it ends up sounding nothing like any of them. Also, she wrote it AND produced it herself, and yet it still sounds more technologically advanced than anything on the album. Personally I think it is what Talk Talk (later period) would sound like if they hadn't shed their dance influences. As a reference point, imagine Tori's Hotel, but even further "out there". I only wish she'd included stuff like this on the album - it would have dispelled the believable myth that it was the product of its producers. The third b-side, "Leave Me To Love", would have to be a let down, but it is almost as brilliant, if entirely different. Starting with a harsh distortion shriek (which starts off guitar, but somehow ends up as Imogen's voice), its as ugly as Aeroplane is pretty. With a ditty-like piano tune in the background (vaguely reminiscent of Happy Phantom, but somehow more...trite?), Imogen sings, or rather snarls over the top, in a harsh, but oddly appealing manner. It builds up to a loud, clanging climax, with Imogen shouting "Inseminate the good, Inseminate pure!". It strikes me as somewhere between Professional Widow and Kate's Leave It Open (or maybe Get Out Of My House). These two b-sides give the impression that the album would be similar to The Dreaming, which, apart from Rake It In, it isn't at all. And although I also love the album as much, its fascinating to see these other sides of Imogen when she lets her guard down, and I hope to see more in the future. Note: For those who love Wireless, there is a similar (though not quite as seamless or captivating in my mind) instrumental on the Getting Scared single called "Miel." The other b-side on that is the fun but ultimately throwaway dance/hip-hop style song called Not You Again. I'm with Tim on this one--I love all the tracks, and much to my surprise because I usually far prefer songs with lyrics, I love the instrumental track. Delightfully inventive. "Shine" however is the most difficult single to find. Even her U.S. tour manager had never even seen it, and Imogen herself was quite surprised I had it when I asked her to sign it. - --Neile - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Neile Graham ..... http://www.sff.net/people/neile ..... neile@sff.net The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music .... http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 02 Dec 1998 13:09:40 -0800 From: "C. Carol asked: >Can anyone who's seen her live in concert please >tell me if she minds having still photos taken? In most of the Jane-shows I've attended, she has asked that no *flash* cameras (or recorders) be used. Assuming she permits non-flash photos, I expect she would like the photographer to be as non-disruptive as possible, preferably shooting with a long lens from the sidelines. However, I've never actually *seen* this happen at any Jane-shows... perhaps you could ask her in advance by calling (or emailing) Sheeba... Jane is the only one currently staffing Sheeba, so you would get your answer directly from her. I'm guessing her answer might be conditional upon discussing this with you personally before the show (and what a nice treat it would be to meet with her before the show!). If you need further info regarding Sheeba, you can check the Sheeba website at: John Miller San Jose CA ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 02 Dec 1998 13:35:06 -0800 From: "C. K. Lisa G. in fact had cancelled her participation in Lilith Fair due to a gig producing soundtrack music. Now that same soundtrack gig re-appears as the reason for DCD cancelling *their* tour. I had also heard through a source that has connections with 4AD that they're not finishing that album slated for spring '99 release. Just like Cocteaus, they've got a bunch of tracks laid down for a new release, and now they're apparently either broken up or taking a major breather. Hopefully both bands will re-emerge together...or solo or regrouped...and continue to put out the high calibre music we've grown to know and love. Veda had a marvelous experience at her recent Living Room concert. Her west coast tour begins this week, and Veda has a number of dates open, on which she is willing to do a few more Living Room shows. She'll be in Olympia, WA on Friday, and San Fran in Monday (I think), but she has Saturday and Sunday open this weekend (December 5 and 6). In California, December 9, 13 and 15 are also open dates for her. (She's performing at Gabah in L.A. on December 11 and at Java Joe's in San Diego on December 12 [Elizabeth Hummel opens in SD]). If anyone is willing and able to put together a Living Room Tour show for Veda in these areas on any of these dates, please call her agent, Patty Romanoff, at (413)247-9308, and speak with Patty or Courtney about it. Veda is grateful for all of the (well-deserved) acclaim and support that she gets on this list! Amy's no longer a member of the Billy Tipton Memorial Saxophone Quartet, but you can always count on her to be out there, pushing that musical edge. Her operatic "Non Lo So, Polo" (based on texts from _Invisible Cities_ by Italo Calvino) should soon be captured on CD, and may travel live to Europe sometime next year. I don't know bout ya'll, but I loved this zine, and I'm sooo sad to hear of its demise. I don't know if there's any possibility that the 'zine can continue in some other form or under another person's watch. I don't know the reasons for ceasing publication, and perhaps they're insurmountable. However, it would be nice to see the hard-copy 'zine continue in some form. Sharon also does the excellent Happy website, Terra Incognita, and she didn't say she's ending that project. I sure hope the website will still be around, and if the printed version of the 'zine *can't* continue in any form, I'm one who's willing to donate any money left in my subscription to furthering the life of the Happy *website*. I'd hope others might consider doing the same. All good things come to an end eventually, I suppose. But sometimes I just *hate* when that happens.
