All I could find about Zen Cohen is that she's from the San Francisco Bay area and has played at Beanbenders in Berkley. I also found the following information about her cd posted on the web: **Zen Cohen does vocals, guitar, piano, and cello. The other instruments (by 6 people) are contrabass (2), clarinet, 3 chambered harmonica, banjo, electric guitar, tuba. Second vocals are by Rachel Cohen (a Jill Cohen is credited with some artwork). The album was produced in Oakland, CA. This is somewhat indulgent 69 minutes and comes with Tibetan monk chants, the various instruments already noted, an elephant song recalling that of Tanita Tikaram, some songs (both in rendition and verses) recalling Tori Amos, still other stuff very disharmonic, and ending with a song called "Amerika" (the Berkeley leftist spelling). Actually all of it is interesting and some pieces quite enjoyable, though much of it rather sounds like what a person in a music conservancy perhaps had to do for a semester's project. Oh, Leonard Cohen is not mentioned though his presence is obviously felt.** Jill :D *share the music!* ------------------------------ Date: 1 Dec 1998 14:00:34 +0000 From: Tim.Cook@Swift.Com (Tim Cook) Subject: RE: What is the deal with age restrictions? >shows in NYC (and practically everything in Philly within 500' of >alchohol) are 21-and-over... why is this? That all changed back in the mid 80s when Congress made a drinking age of 21 a requisite for receiving some federal transportation grants, effectively instuting a national drinking age of 21 (since no states want to be excluded from the trough). Actually, Jim was sure it _was_ Ani until I told him it wasn't. Now, the similarities may be superficial when you know the albums better, but on the surface it's obvious. I'm having some trouble getting past that. Maybe simply because over time I've really clicked into Ani's style. >Yes. :) But I just don't "get" Imogen Heap (if I wanted to listen to >Alanis I'd buy her albums), so I guess we both have our deficiencies. ;) Wow. I hope you try to catch Imogen live, especially on this leg while she's playing solo. It really, truly, was the closest thing I have experienced to girl/piano blend (actually better because she doesn't have Tori's mannerisms) to seeing Tori play at The Backstage in 1992. I just went to my first "home concert" outside Boston in Sudbury (have I been living under a rock?!) and wanted to give a big thumbs-up for the atmosphere and personality of it. Are there other Ecto-Bostonians who have been to a Fox Run concert? It's run by this wonderful married couple, Laurie and Neil Laba, with help with bookings from Mary Pittari. Laurie and Neil have this cozy, eclectic home with four white "yippy dogs" that are just a part of the audience as anyone else. Neil and Laurie sit in an overstuffed couch "sidestage" (in this case, between the living room and kitchen!), and help with the soundboard and overall stage chatter. I travelled from Philly to Fox Run to see Larry Gowan, a well-known Canadian artist who has sold upwards of 4 million records in Canada (but sadly, hardly a handful here in the U.S.). It was truly a treat to see someone like Gowan who I've seen before in venues like Montreal's The Forum. He was charming, engaging, and played his songs acoustically so wonderfully. In between sets he mingled with guests as we drank coffee and feasted from the plentiful "dessert bar." I wholeheartedly endorse Fox Run concerts. They will be hosting Richard Shindell in March, and are trying very hard to secure Ani DiFranco! If Ani says yes, I'm there. Here is their web site: www.foxrun.org Oh and better yet: ticket prices are reasonable with a $5 donation to either a Children's Outreach Center or a Battered Women's Shelter. Great music, great hosts, great music, and you're helping the needy! It doesn't get much better than this! 2.) Does anybody know what's up with Holly Cole's new "Christmas Blues" CD? I've tried ordering it from three different online stores; all are on backorder. Am hoping I can get one before Valentine's Day! :) 3.) Thanks to all those who have "talked up" Veda Hille over the last few months. I took the plunge and ordered "Spine." She is quite amazing and am enjoying the CD over and over. It's Canadian only, as far as I know (though again, I'm sure there's a Japanese pressing), on Alert, but Tower usually gets a handful of them around XXXmastime. Likewise _Count_Your_Blessings_ (also only available on this continent as an Alert release) and M2OH's XXXmas EP. Check with a Tower or one of the online CD services, or, what the heck, call Alert in Toronto and see if they have any suggestions. > > 3.) Meanwhile, Rufus Wainright is here in Seattle (I'm here on vacation) on Wednesday (I am so there) and Tricky's here some time this week, though I'm thinking that may be Friday, in which case I'll do the Veda thing because I've seen Tricky twice. Anyone else in Seattle want to meet for coffee or join the Rufus expedition? He's as ARO.space this Wednesday, with some act called "Special Guest." Pretty original name for a band, no? - --charley _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? (8pm) Howdy Howdy Howdy! It's a Holiday Hootenany comin' atcha! We'll be singing songs of Women's names at Schuba's on the 9th of December. You know, like JOLENE, RUBY DON'T TAKE YOUR LOVE TO TOWN, HELP ME RHONDA, and TELL LAURA I LOVE HER (well hopefully better songs than those...Ooops! I think I'm hearing myself getting yelled at by those fellas over at Hear Diagonally for that last comment). Anyway, it's still a Wednesday, and it's still only $4, but the time has changed (so...TELL ALL YOUR FRIENDS!!!!). We begin the beguine at 8:00pm (For you sailors I met from the Great Lakes Naval Base, that would be 20:00, and a Happy Spanksgiving to you TOO!). We're trying something new here, so please don't adjust your television. "This is Part I of a Pair of Hoots." What??? Well, the next Hoot (which will be in February) will tackle the delicate subject of Boys names. I just couldn't bring myself to have a "Girl vs. Boy" Hoot. WAY too real for a night of fun! And where would all my transgendered friends go? So we're splitting it into two Hoots! We were also going to have the exact same line up for both Hoots, but the popularity of the show has become a bit wonderfully overwhelming, and since all the performers are also my friends, there will be some different performers at the "Ode To Boy" Hoot in Feb. Anyway, BACK TO THIS MONTH! I mean NEXT WEEK! The 9th of December. The day before I leave on my big trip to stalk the lead singer from Boyzone in Ireland. It's the "Who's That Girl Hoot". Don't miss it! Featuring performances by all your favorite Hoot night performers, as well as a few new faces. But, the faces are oh so lovely! Copies of I WANNA BE KATE: The Songs of Kate Bush (Brown Star) will be on sale at the show, as there are quite a few performers from that album playing the Hoot night on the 9th of December (AT THE NEW TIME OF 8:00PM). Including Catherine Smitko, Brian Vaughan of The Baltimores, Justin Roberts, The Moviegoers, Jacquie Krupka of The Plunging Necklines, Trinkets of Joy, Thomas Negovan & Three Years Ghost, Victoria Storm, Eddie Carlson of The Aluminum Group & Mouse(& POI DOG PONDERING!) performing with Frisbie, and of course Tom Dunning & Your Boyfriends! Q: Hey, where's Tom Dunning? A: He's over there, with your boyfriends! Better come out and keep an eye on him! SCHUBAS, WEDNESDAY, THE 9TH OF DECEMBER, 1998, AT THE NEW TIME 8:00PM!!!! ps. We are also welcoming to the stage a super special guest all the way from Belfast, Joe Cassidy of Butterfly Child! WHAT A SHOW! You'll think you're at Circus Vargas! I'll almost definitely be seeing Veda Hille on the 11th but don't think I'll be able to make it down to San Diego on the 12th to see her there. Are there any highly recommended concerts happening on the 12th? Does anybody want to meet for dinner and/or a concert while I'm there? And, finally, can anybody tell me anything about Gabah/Meow Mix -- where is it, is it easy to get to, and will I need to buy a ticket ahead of time? I've been having trouble tracking down a phone number for them.
