My Taste of Joy CD is one of my favorites. Unfortunately, they only have one album out, Trigger Fables, on the Nettwerk label (from 1994 or '95). I heard that they are planning a second album, but not on Nettwerk, so I don't know the status. The lead singer, Michele Gould, was one half of Lava Hay. She also wrote all the songs on this album. Her voice is girlish and breathy, but the music - bright, guitar-based pop - is as old as the Beatles. Thirty years later, you can really hear their influence on this album. It's not so apparent in the vocal harmonies, but more in the song structures, musical style, and rhythms. If you like Sam Phillips, Eva Trout, or some of Heather Nova (Walk This World in particular), then you'll probably love this album. I don't think you can buy this CD in a music store in the US, but you can order it through Nettwerk, though that's expensive. A cheaper way to get it would be to get a Canadian friend to pick it up for you (worked for me! :)) If you want to hear it first before committing your hard-earned money, I'll be glad to make a tape for you to sample it. Her performance was amazing. I posted info at the time. (Basically, she plays violin for about 15 minutes, grabbing samples into a small mixing board, and then spends the next 45 minutes manipulating the sounds that she's captured into a remarcable sonic landscape.) I wasn't sure if it would be so exciting on CD though. Lot's of times I find that avant garde/improv stuff is really exciting in person, but doesn't get captured that well on disc. I was thrilled when they announced at Pauline's show that Kaffe was coming here on December 2. I had just written her name down on the survey as someone they should bring to town. Tonight I wrote Ingrid Karklins, so I hope my luck continues! Actually, Outpost is not bringing Kaffe to town. In fact, that very night they are sponsoring the Cry, Cry, Cry show. Fortunately (and unfortunately for her, probably), Kaffe is at the Launchpad, which is the alternative rock club. So the show will start late enough for me to see. I'm afraid the club will be pretty empty though. Now she's back to the profession that moved her out of that Volkswagen van years ago, with a new album and a new producer (longtime Madonna collaborator Patrick Leonard). Ditching collaborator Steve Poltz, Jewel wrote all but one of the 13 tracks for the record. She brings a slew of friends along for the ride, most notably Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea on the beautiful "Barcelona." With an excellent backing band that features Jude Cole and Ednaswap's Paul Bushnell among others, the sound is not only livelier than her previous work, it's quite a bit better. jessica n. weiser http://adam.nettfriends.com/Jess "i need to wash myself again to hide all the the dirt and pain, i'd be scared but there's nothing underneath" -radiohead ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Nov 1998 09:41:31 -0800 From: Neile Graham Subject: Re: Kathleen Yearwood news neal copperman wrote: >Neile, can you elaborate on some of this a bit? I check the WFUV concert calendar twice a day at least. I can't believe a missed this. I was so pissed that WFUV seemed to snub me for PJ Harvey also. I requested the tixs and I doubt that WFUV listeners listen to her. They never called me. I figured they thought well she won Liz Phair for Sessions and Tori for VH1's Story Teller's we won't give her anymore this month... Oh well Thursday i am allowed to win again. Ah, Taste of Joy were a fine band, but I wouldn't get too excited - their only CD came out in 95 and I believe Michele Gould is taking time off from making music so a new one is unlikely. If I'm wrong, I'd be very happy to be corrected :) __________________________________________________ "What the public wants is called politically unrealistic.Translated into English, that means power and privilege are opposed to it. It's overrated, but yet, I watch. I guess it's because it comes on after Buffy, and I never miss Buffy. I also appreciate that there's always Ecto music on Felicity. Hell, they've practically played the entire _Siren_ album. But suddenly I'm mad ... they played KaTe's "This Woman's Work" tonight, and DID NOT mention KaTe at the end of the show .... but they mentioned Jewel and the other music played. What's up with that? Cowboy Junkies _Miles From Our Home_ (going to see them Thursday night in Dallas) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Nov 1998 14:26:23 +1100 From: Andrew Fries Subject: Jewel and PJ Harvey Have you ever noticed how similar Jewel and PJ Harvey sound? Just kidding! Those were the two disks I got to play on the listening station and that's about it for the connection between them. That and the fact that I'm about to buy both of them! I haven't seen the video for "Hands" so I can't comment - perhaps it really would be a turn off, like Neile found. But having just heard the music, I didn't find Hands or the rest of the disk offensive. A bit preachy - - perhaps. But this is Jewel we're talking about. I don't think she was ever one to go for the obscure or the sublime, was she? It's always pretty much straight to the point with her... and I kind of appreciate that. Within her limits, I thought the songs were quite OK, less cutesy that some of that first CD, arrangements remarkably restrained given the budget and big label push behind the whole thing... and I like her voice. So sue me. I still think that it's unfortunate that she ended up being picked for stardom because if it wasn't for that she'd still be getting a lot better reviews here than she currently does. Overexposure is a terrible thing! And P.J. Harvey - I was a bit late to get to that one, because I sort of lost interest after "To bring you my love"... but after I managed to wrap my head around the concept of PJ's sound based around something else than raw guitar/bass/drums combo I have to admit her latest one is a stunner! Most likely will appear in my top of the year list (I say "most likely" because these are only my impressions from the listening booth after all) The comparison that occurs to me is that this is like Lesley Rankine with less shrill anger (that sometimes sounds a bit by-the-numbers to me) but more genuine menace. Top stuff! __________________________________________________ "What the public wants is called politically unrealistic.Translated into English, that means power and privilege are opposed to it. Still, to me, it's good to hear Kate played anywhere in this country. (It certainly never happens on the radio!) The Jewel song is new, the Kate > song is not. How often are older songs promoted by other means? The deal shows have going now is that the song is provided without charge in exchange for being credited and featured at the end of the show. It may be that her label/Kate figured there wasn't that much promotional value and took the $$ instead. They don't just mention new albums...Ben Webster got screen time for the track of his they played. Jason ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Nov 1998 17:46:58 -0800 From: "C. K. BMG is no problem...send 'em the card back, write across it, "Please cancel membership". If you get another card (since they come so frequently), do the same thing again. This should stop their mail flow...at least until you get an invite to join up again. (Yes, they'll try to lure you with another "12 free" offer!) BMG has no minimum purchase requirements...unless they've changed their m.o. since I was last a member (to build my jazz collection.) Columbia, I believe, has a 4 cd minimum requirement, at "regular club prices". But they shouldn't be sending you cards re: automatic shipments...since they don't do automatic shipments anymore. So, if you have bought the minimum you should be ok. If you haven't bought the minimum, I don't know how to advise you without being "unethical". Technically when you join these clubs you make a formal agreement to comply with their requirements...and if you break the agreement, I guess they can put you into a collections procedure, or even report you to a credit bureau. Again, BMG is no sweat, since they don't have minimums to buy. Columbia you may want to consider fulfilling your part of the bargain, if a clean credit report is important to you. Just a friendly tip from one consumer to another!
