I changed ISPs several times in quick succession, and then changed computers, and in the midst of it all I never quite got around to re-subscribing to Ecto. I'm not sure exactly how long it has been since my last post here, but I'd dare say it's been a fair while - the above email address has been inactive for some time now. I can now be reached at the address from which this mail comes - ahoran@ozemail.com.au - as well as a secondary address, anthony@wendyrule.com I've been doing quite a lot since I was last here - rather than list it all, I might be better off just pointing those interested to my "resume" web page at http://www.ozemail.com.au/~ahoran/ - but I have missed Ecto a lot, now having to resport to actually finding new music myself rather than discovering all the wonderful stuff that the Ectites would tell me about. :-) It was just the other week that, for no apparent reason, I thought to myself "I wonder if Happy Rhodes ever got a new CD out? I recall hearing about an impending record deal". I looked up the Ecto web page, found the new album at Music Boulevard, and received my copy yesterday (it's *incredible* - I love it when she biases things towards the electronic :). Needless to say I thought I'd better subscribe to Ecto again, finally, and see if anyone I knew was still here (they are, and hi to you all!). I know I've mentioned this here before, albeit a long time ago, but a close friend of mine, Wendy Rule - two of whose very early demos I sent in for a HBP cassette - has been busily recording and gaining a following here in Australia over the past few years, and her two albums would, I'm sure, have big appeal to many here. She's not in the Ectophile's Guide, so I'll do the obligatory non-obnoxious plug - you can hear what Wendy does and read all about it at the web site I'm still maintaining for her, at http://wendyrule.com. And yes, mail order is available. :-) All that aside, it's great to be back around Ecto and wonderful to have a new Happy Rhodes album to be fascinated by (and yes, I love the new Alanis record too, which I did not expect at all!). I'm looking forward to being part of it all again...! - - Anthony ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Nov 1998 00:15:47 -0700 From: neal copperman Subject: Re: _Something Wild_ soundtrack: Sister Carol, the Feelies/Willies At 9:34 PM -0500 11/11/98, queen of carrot flowers wrote: > I know there's at least a 12" single >with "Everybody's Got Something to Hide..." and one other tune. I can't recall what the main tune was (though I think it's something off of Only Life), but the other bonus track was a Jonathon Richman instrumental - Egyptian Reggae, I think. That's Well, just speaking for myself, as one of the people who posted information about June Rich breaking up - I posted it because it seemed there were some people here who'd be interested, but I haven't talked about them because, well... I don't really like them. I've seen them at several festivals and concerts I've been to, where they shared a stage with bands I like much better, so I'm familiar with them. The two lead singers are pretty good, and I like their harmonies, but I've never found anything about the band that really held my interest or pushed them beyond a "pleasant" ranking for me. I don't mind hearing three or four songs by them, it's kind of nice, but after that I'm usually hoping the set will end (at a concert) or going off somewhere else (at a festival). Some of the people who posted recently probably really like them, I'm just saying you can't assume the flurry of activity is proportional to the number of people who like the band. The flurry may be somewhat of an exaggeration. -- Cos (Ofer Inbar) -- cos@leftbank.com cos@cs.brandeis.edu -- The Left Bank Operation -- lbo@leftbank.com http://www.leftbank.com/ Romkey's Law: all unanimous decisions are wrong. Hey friends! Please forgive the "broadcast email", but I wanted to bring you up to date on the latest recording news here in McCormickland. Preparations are well underway for my next "Official" CD, and I am very excited about it. I say "Official", because this will be a big project, not unlike "Right Now", but with somewhat of a different sound. I say "Official" because it will be a full-length produced album, with some intimate acoustic tracks as well as some tracks that rock out with bass and drums and cellos and accordians and, and, and. I say "Official" because it will be distributed and promoted to stores, radio, music publications, etc, as well as being available through this webpage and at my concerts. As some of you may know, I will not be doing this record with Jonathan Edwards, though he and I remain dear friends and touring buddies. I do have an amazing team assembled, and also expect to spend some time in the producer's chair myself, something I have always dreamed of doing! I say "Official" becauce I have something else up my sleeve. Producing a full-scale CD project is a huge undertaking on many fronts, and it can take a long time to bring all the elements together. I am impatient. I am antsy. So I have also been working on an "underground" project, an EP of seven solo acoustic songs pure and simple, no backup musicians, no retakes or overdubs, just me and the guitar. I recorded these songs one hot steamy day last summer in Massachusettes. My criteria for choosing the songs was simple: I like them. And, I thought you would like them. These Seven Solos are some of the most requested songs by concert audiences, and may or may not appear on a future release - and even if they do, they won't be as raw as this. These are the original versions, living-room style. Yes, Purgatory Cafe is on there, the only recorded version of that most requested little number. (You can even sip coffee out of your Purgatory Cafe mug as you give it its first listen!) And Sacred, and Living His Life, and Under the Same Moon, and a couple of others too. The cover photo was taken by my Dad when I was three years old, and I am dutifully guarding our Greenwich Village basement apartment wearing his old Army shirt and a paper bag on my head. Is this symbolic of something? I dunno, but it is kind of cute, if I do say so myself. "Seven Solos" won't be promoted or advertised to the public, it is between you and me. It should be here by very early December, just in time for....oh, ok, I won't say it. But for anyone who would like to pre-order, I will be happy to personally sign the CD with the message of your choice, either to you, or as a gift you might like to have personalized, and I will send it to you the instant they arrive. Ordering information is available below. I will also have them available at concerts. Pulling this all together has been quite an undertaking and quite a learning experience. I am reminded of this quote that has been taped to my wall since I was fifteen, from the Tassajara Cookbook: "The mystery is that it is possible to do what we don't know how to do." ************************** ORDERING INFORMATION: STOCKING STUFFER SPECIALS! ** "Seven Solos" CD, autographed with your personal message $15 ** "Seven Solos" CD PLUS Purgatory Cafe Coffee Mug $20 ** Any Two CD's ("Seven Solos" and/or "Right Now") $25 (Also available: "Right Now" on cassette $10, "Right Now" T-shirt, black cotton, large only $15, "Gotta Go" bumper sticker $1 or free w/ other purchase) Please include $2 per order for shipping and handling. Someone else I know was also nominated: Jensen Buchanan (yes, that's her real name), with whom I went to highschool, is nominated for "Hottest Female Star"(!). I had a crush on her boyfriend, which she thought was kind of cute (!). I wrote my first play for her. Anyway. Vote for 'em both, K? I bought his CD, VAST (Visual Audio Sensory Theater) a couple of weeks ago after hearing it on an in-store listening station. Pretty interesting stuff. He writes music that's both melodic and very jarring and dissonant, with lovely strings and keyboard effects, suddenly interrupted by distorted guitars and heavy electronic percussion. And on top of all that, he samples music from various parts of the world, including Bulgarian women's folk music, Tibetan chants, and other stuff. He works these samples into the songs in such a way that they sound as though they were written that way. For example, one song has a sampled line of a song from an acapella Balkan women's chorus, which he plays over and over with guitars and piano providing the chords, as the chorus of the song - so it sounds as though the chorus was written with the rest of the song. Really gives me the chills. Also, I really like some of the lyrics. One song has the line, "I'll never find someone quite as touched as you." Another: "Not one day goes by that I don't know that I'm dying" (sung angrily to God, with samples of sacred music sung by a men's choir in the background, overlaid with loud, distorted guitars). Believe it or not, it works. It's your basic classical/world/metal/electronica fusion album! :) Joyce ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V4 #399 **************************
