"that whole incestuous Boston music scene" - I like that :) Kris Delmhorst is a pretty recent addition to this scene, but I've seen her a few times recently and enjoyed it. For any Bostonians reading this who are curious and want to see her, the next Kris Delmhorst show I'm aware of is the Soho/Ole in Inman Square on Wednesday evening, November 18th. That show is with Lori McKenna... > The next installment in the series is in 2 weeks, with Jess Klein, Lori > McKenna (who?) and VEDA HILLE. I'm not sure if it will turn out to be Great segue, meth! :) Lori McKenna is another recent addition to that whole incestuous Boston folk music scene (can I just say TWIBFMS from now on? :) She opened up at the Songstreet uberconcert this evening, and she also appeared at the Songstreet anniversary thing at Johnny D's this summer. Another new one to look out for from TWIBFMS is Summer Pierre, a friend of Rose Polenzani's who started doing the singer/songwriter thang about two years ago. I wrote about her on ecto when she and Rose did their first show together, at WBRS back in July. Summer's been gigging a lot, often with Nate Borofsky, and she's fun. And for those of you who haven't yet heard Mica Richards, I think she's got the most ectophilic potential of the lot because of her powerful, expressive, blues-jazz-tinged vocal style. She reminds me a lot of Trina Hamlin, except she plays keyboard/piano rather than guitar and harmonica, and also I've been a fan of hers longer than I've known Trina :) Mica Richards CD release concert at Club Passim, December 12th. It's her second CD, and was recorded live at Passim. I very highly recommend it, and the release concert too. np: Wolfstone - Pick of the Litter - the Best of Wolfstone 1991-1996 (8 CD Green Linnet order just arrived in the mail, yay!) nr: "Midaq Alley", by Naguib Mafouz (Egyptian writer, Nobel prize winner for Literature) -- Cos (Ofer Inbar) -- cos@polyamory.org cos@leftbank.com -- WBRS (100.1 FM) -- info@wbrs.org http://www.wbrs.org/ "When your dream comes true, you're out one dream." -- The Nields, "Tomorrowland" ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 8 Nov 1998 06:49:05 -0500 From: "Joanna M. I thought her album was pretty good...until I saw her live. Even with just a piano, she was riveting. Then the album really did it for me. Don't miss her if you have the opportunity. She's an immensely talented gal. (uh, assuming it's _rapt_ we're talkin' about here -- i came in >late...) i'll listen to it again just to make sure and, as long as the clouds don't part, you're more than welcome to my copy -- it's been sitting on the slush pile for at least a year! interesting tidbits about her participation in the real world and other bands though. didn't know that -- thanks, yrvyn (i think everyone should spell irvin's name this way since he obviously gets so much pleasure out of having y's in his name). woj n.p. jane siberry -- teenager ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 08 Nov 1998 14:43:30 -0500 From: desmond in a tutu Subject: Re: mary jane lamond on tour also sprach Paul Kim: >mary jane lamond is currently touring across the US, > >21-Nov New York, NY Bottom Line i remember hearing this show announced over the pa system at the bottom line last time we were there, so i think this date, at least, is correct on the wicklow entertainment site (although it seems strange that she would go from ashville, nc to arlington, va via new york city). unfortunately, we already have plans for that evening -- meredith will be seeing veda hille play in stamford, ct while i'll be down in new york hanging out with a bunch of robyn hitchcock fans and going to see the saturday night showing of "strorefront hitchcock" (a concert film produced by jonathan demme) at film forum. >Francis Dunnery with Idina Menzel opening (plus some others) at Mama Kin anybody have any opinions on idina menzel? i listened to her album at one of the local shops (which, thankfully, put a cd player out next to the used bin!) and every other song was either alright or annoying, which wasn't a good enough ratio for me to buy it, even for $4. also thanks to the cd player by the used bin, i've heard bits and pieces of albums by soularium and furslide. the former is a sort of hip hop/dance/trance mish-mash which isn't to bad, but, again, didn't inspire me to pick it up. furslide appears to be the band of jennifer turner who, if i remember correctly, was the woman who played guitar on natalie merchant's _carnival_ album and also toured with her. she was quite the tasteful player on the tour but, alas, seems not to have translated that on to her own record which is just a loud, raucous bar band. *sigh* woj ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 8 Nov 1998 15:46:33 -0500 (EST) From: Jet Girl Subject: PJ Harvey & I need help - Canadian Bibliophiles! Okay I admit i wasn't much of a PJ Harvey fan. Only own Dry, and have only listened to it 4-5 times. Friday night we went to see PJ at 9:30 club. My My instant convert. Oh it was a lovely lovely show. Highly recommend. My fellow concertgoers informed me that 80% of the show was from the last two albums. Dunno, I was entranced most of the show. Needless to say Im out the door buying the albums as you read. Help Canadians! :) One of my ultra favorite authors, Barbara Gowdy has a new book out called the White Bone. It won't be available here until May of 1999, I can't wait. It's already been released in Canada and is up for a couple awards. I'm looking for a copy. Any bibliophiles out there that can help me find a copy?? ta! kIrI jetgrrl@magenta.com http://magenta.com/~jetgrrl Teacher: Let's all work together to make Daria's dream a reality.
