If you can, make *SURE* you catch one. You won't be disappointed...<< In mid Septmber I went and saw Imogen when she played at this small pub venue. Although the stage wasn't big enough to hold a piano (she used keyboards) and there wasn't much room for her to move around in, she certainly did make a *massive* impression on me. This is what I posted to a friend of mine (Tim close your eyes ;p)- I meant to post it here too but never got aorund to it unfortunately: >>Ok well not much musically happening with me over here except for the Imogen Heap concert which was on Monday. The venue was a pub, only 20-25metres by 10metres so Imogen could be clearly seen. I was standing on a ledge and being also one of a few ppl dancing I think she was looking at me quite a few times (most ppl didn't even recognise her..so I guess they weren't fans..although many did seem to know her latest single Come Here Boy). Oh she played three new songs 'Dragon' (good rocky song) and 'Pine for a Green Day (fanstatic fast piano/keyboard playing..drums/guitars joined in..the characteristic Imogen Heap building up at the second chorus..brilliant song..I hope she releases this either as a B-side or on her next album)..and lastly 'Liar' another good rocky song. Ok so basically she sang all the album tracks save Getting Scared. Highlight: Come Here Boy with no band, Candlelight -the build up part she went into really high-key singing..high key wails..that was good:), Sweet Religion- the intro reminded me so much of Kate's early touring period btw. Her stage manner is *very* much like Kate's theatricality moving around the stage dramatically and using her facial expressions as well for effect. Afterwards I waited till closing time and met Imogen as she was leaving! She's a shocking (for a female) 6' 2" but is really very cute (her album cover does her absolutely *NO* justice at all). She's very down to earth and jokey in manner. I got her to sign my CD booklet. << I also met the lady who'd produced the video to 'Getting Scared' and told her all about this newsgroup. Erm, she didn't seem very internet literate though but I least I tried:) Imogen was due to play London again in November but I guess you American have got the better of her now...arrghh Don't miss her!! Local papers mention Natalie MacMaster playing 3 dates in New Mexico - 11, 12, & 14. I believe MJL is with her on all those dates. (Or at least, I hope so, since I'm seeing the Albuquerque show, not listed above.) Then again, the Taos show isn't listed in my paper, though perhaps Taos is too far away. Amusingly enough, while I was reading this, I won free tix for this show on the radio! Despite it being the UNM station, here in Albuquerque, they were giving away tix to a show in Socorro on a night I couldn't go. And I won by identifying the song they played on the radio as being by Joni Mitchell, though I have no idea what the song is. (Thanks Brad! If you hadn't made me all those Joni Mitchell tapes, I never would have gotten it.) I stopped by the South Broadway Cultural Center to pick up a ticket for the show, which is amazingly priced at $5 (cheaper than the service charges on the Cowboy Junkies show, which I couldn't stomach and now both shows are sold out, so I'll have to throw myself on the mercy of chance to get in). I asked if Mary Jane Lamond was playing with her, and they said unfortunately not. Then, a woman in the office said, she's playing a full show in Taos, which I'm promoting. So, turns out she is only playing with Natalie for the show in Santa Fe. But she and her entire band are staying with this woman. So it looks like I'll be seeing Natalie on Thursday and driving the nearly 3 hours to Taos on Friday for Mary Jane Lamond. I can take the day off and needed an excuse to visit Taos anyway. And on Friday I can catch half of Paulina Oliveras show before sneaking out to see Touch of Evil with a Q&A with the "producer". Tonight woj and I went down to the Acoustic Studio in Stamford to see the first installment of a series called "Not Famous Yet", this featuring Erin McKeown, Kris Delmhorst and Pamela Means. It ruled. The format was interesting: each performer did a 20-minute set, then intermission, then for the second half each did another set, but backed up in turns by the other two, and at the end everyone jammed together. The whole thing had the feel of a really good Falcon Ridge workshop. Erin McKeown was first. I've met her a few times, but hadn't had a chance to see her play until tonight. She's been so hyped up I wasn't expecting much, but I have to say I was quite pleasantly surprised. Vocally she sounds a lot like Beth Orton, and her music is acoustic/electric thoughtful folk-pop. I picked up a copy of her tape, which I'm just listening to now. I'll definitely see her play again. Next came Kris Delmhorst. I'd never heard of her before tonight, but I'm glad I remedied that situation! She played fiddle on Erin's last song, then ran backstage to grab her guitar for her own set. She's originally from Brooklyn, and now is part of that whole incestuous Boston music scene. Her first CD, _Appetite_ just came out a few weeks ago, and it features guest appearances by Jennifer Kimball and Catie Curtis. Jim Infantino (he of the big ego) did the design of the booklet. Any fan of the Jennifer Kimball, Jonatha Brooke, Dar Williams, and Ani DiFranco persuasion won't go wrong with Kris Delmhorst. woj commented that she's got some Barbara Kessler in her too, and I can see that. She also has a great stage presence: bubbly and funny, and clearly having a lot of fun. She ain't a bad musician, either. The CD, after first listen didn't disappoint - the arrangements are more fleshed out, and I think I'm going to be listening to it a lot. Last, but not least was Pamela Means, who came onstage with That Hair and proceeded to severely disconcert the Fairfield County audience with her guitar attack and subject matter. I had to laugh when I heard some particularly Lands End folks at intermission commenting that "she plays that guitar so angrily - she must have some really serious issues she needs to work out." Hah. Everybody stuck around for the second half, though, which was a good thing, because that was definitely the best part of the night. All three artists started off playing a particularly soulful number led by Erin, with Pamela on guitar and Kris on fiddle, then Erin and Pamela did a couple songs, then Kris came back and they all did a *really* killer version of Rose Polenzani's "You Don't Know". After that Erin introduced Kris, and she did a few more songs, with Pamela joining her on one, after which Kris introduced Pamela. Various combinations of the three combined for that final set. Pamela did one solo song, an as-yet-untitled new one that was really good. The show-ender was a smoking rendition of Pamela's song "Truth", with each artist jamming either on guitar or fiddle. The audience brought them all back for an encore, which turned out to be an even more jamming version of Dylan's "Maggie's Farm", with Pamela singing lead. Yow. What made all of this even more amazing was the fact that these women really hadn't had any rehearsal time. All in all, a great evening. I got to see one of my faves (Pamela Means), confirm my suspicions about a new (to me) artist (Erin McKeown) and discover a great new talent (Kris Delmhorst). Three out of three, not bad - - and all for only $5. What more can you ask for? The next installment in the series is in 2 weeks, with Jess Klein, Lori McKenna (who?) and VEDA HILLE. I'm not sure if it will turn out to be the jam-fest this one was, but it's still going to be great. +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY: the Veda Hille mailing list *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V4 #394 **************************
