Over the end credits, they played Fiona Apple doing the Beatles' Across The Universe. They've been playing this song on the radio a fair amount here. I find myself kind of liking it, even though it drives me crazy: she sounds like she's singing flat and with a lazy, just-got-out-of-bed approach. (Well, the original also has this quality to some extent.) Anyone else bothered by this? Whenever I hear Fiona's version, I can't help but think of Sloan Wainwright's vastly-better version on her recent album. Oh, I liked the movie a lot, too, although, as Neal says, it's kind of heavy-handed near the end. Earlier, woj wrote: "the solution is obvious and left as an exercise for the student." And Chris followed-up: MY favorite was always when, usually in a Physics or Calculus text, the author(s) asserted that the solution should be, "intuitively obvious to the casual observer"... I'm reminded of a Far Side in which two scientists are at a black board discussing a formula containing the phrase "then a miracle occurred". The caption reads (words to the effect) "I think you need to be more explicit in this step". I always loved that cartoon and once used a variation of it when grading a test problem in which a student jumped directly to the correct answer from completely wrong reasoning. She was performing with Bob Dylan. I won't comment on his part of the night since I'm not really a fan of his, but seeing Joni was just as great as I had hoped it would be. She was obviously not in top form, and she confirmed that by telling us she had a bit of a bug and apologizing for not being able to hit certain notes (of course, that didn't stop her from lighting up a cigarette and smoking throughout the last two songs). Even so, she gave a wonderful performance. I didn't write down the set list, but the stand-out performances for me were an amazing, jazzed-up version of "Black Crow" and a performance of "Magdaleine Laundries" that made me appreciate that song much more than I ever had before.
