Her band is always so solid, and her voice is powerful and pure. If she's coming to a town near you--go! She'll be back in Indy in Dec. in Bloomington for a show to benefit Toys for Tots. Her opening band (boy trio) was pretty good as well, they are Iodine and following her for the rest of the tour, I think. ;) jessica n. weiser - www.adam.nettfriends.com/Jess "Love is not a victory march, it's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah." ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 4 Nov 1998 13:40:30 -0800 (PST) From: Old Spice Subject: Re: Alanis New CD WARNING: NEGATIVE SENTIMENTS TO FOLLOW I'm curious to _borrow_ the new More-is-less album, if only because the noise around it is so loud, and I have to know for myself if she in any tiny, indirect way deserves the cover of Rolling Stone, but JLP and its success was--is--for me a powerful illustration of a lot of what's wrong with music and the music industry and the music-buying public today. And to say that she's come a long way since JLP is, while if true, commendable I suppose, it's kind of like saying she's a _lot_ less dead than Elvis, and is certainly not gonna draw full price out of my wallet. I expect to see many more positive reviews of her new album here on Ecto--and certainly would never suggest, in airing my negative views, that ectophiles spare me by refraining from posting them--but I'll also be very curious about dissenting views, and especially interested to hear from people whose opinions of her work have undergone any kind of change as a result of hearing the new one, - --charley - ---MRL220@aol.com wrote: > > I have to echo others comments about Alanis new CD. Here is a copy of the press release i picked up. Below is the track listing of the CD.... really good list of artists. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE November 4th, 1998 CANADIAN ARTISTS 'SING FOR A CURE' FOR DIABETES - -Proceeds from the CD to benefit Juvenille Diabetes Foundation Canada- TORONTO-Thirteen of Canada's top-performing female artists, including Sarah McLachlan, Amanda Marshall and Beverly Mahood, have joined forces to fine a cure for diabetes -- a potentially fatal disease that afflicts one in 20 Canadians. the CD project, a non-traditional way for a charity to raise much needed funds, was developed by Juvenille Diabetes Foundation Canada (JDF), in conjunction with Sony Music. All net proceeds from the CD, entitled "Faith & Healing," will benefit diabetes research. "The funds raised through the sale of 'Faith & Healing' will put us one step closer to finding a cure for diabetes," says Kate MacDonald, National Executive Director of JDF. "And as the holiday season approaches, it is a great gift idea because it has a variety of popular artists, and it benefits such a worthwhile cause." Artists that contribute to the "Faith & Healing" CD include Amanda Marshall, Tara Maclean, Beverley Mahood, Chantal Kreviazuk, Lile Fatale, Melanie Doane, Wild Strawberries, Terez Montcalm, Holly Cole, Sarah McLachlan, Damhnait Doyle, Rachel Matkin and Amy Sky. The CD is an eclectic mix of artists from various genres that will appeal to all musical tastes. "I feel so previleged to be contributing to this CD," says beverley Mahood, nominee for the Rising Star award at this year's Canadian Country Music Awards. "The song I chose, Girl out of the Ordinary, is so appropriate for this compilation because it's about a child who faces challenges, but those obstacles don't stop her from pursuing her dreams." All of the artists included on the CD donated their time and talents. They agreed to contribute their songs because they are committed to finding a cure for diabetes -- a disease that afflicts 2.25 million Canadians and causes devastating complications such as blindness, heart and kidney failure and amputation. "The number of Canadians suffering from diabetes is frightening," says Brenda Dainard, Manager, Special Projects, Sony Music. "These figures were one of the primary reasons why the artists agreed to contribute to this project -- they wanted to do what they could to help find a cure." "Faith & Healing" will be available at all le chateau locations across Canada from November 2 - December 11, 1998, or by calling JDF's toll-free phone number at 1-877-CUREJDF. The suggested retail price of the CD is $16.95. Since its inception, JDF has donated more money to diabetes research than any other not-for-profit, non-government health agency in the world. JDF's vision is clear and simple -- to find a cure for diabetes through the support of research. Its world-renowned research has been responsible for major scientific breakthroughs on the path to find a cure. for more info check out. http://www.jdfc.ca Faith & Healing Amanda Marshall Trust Me (This is Love) Tara MacLean More Beverley Mahood Girl Out of The Ordinary Chantal Kreviazuk Dealer Lile Fatale Mimi Melanie Doane My Sister Sings (Kevin Killen Remix) Wild Strawberries Blunt Terez Montcalm Parle pas Si Forte Holly Cole Make It Go Away Sarah McLachlan Full of Grace Damhnait Doyle A List of Things Rachel Matkin Living Beyond Our Dreams Amy Sky Wall Against The Water **************************************************** Rannie Turingan Toronto, Ontario, Canada ICQ:3857207 AIM:ranzTO http://www.geocities.com/WestHollywood/Park/9850/ "We were looking for a word with ambivalence something that suggested both arousal and fear." I think I heard the phrase "little guys" somewhere in the mix (that PA stack 5 feet from my right ear didn't help much...). Anyone else care to comment? Oh yeah, and the set ran from 9:35 till 10:55 by my watch, so it was a typical length IMHO. :-) Patty was great, but she's a WHOLE LOT different on this tour than any of the other 3 times I've seen her. First of all, the "flamin' red" wig certainly changed her appearance! Secondly, watching her sing without the guitar encumbering her movements was fascinating; she gestured a lot and seemed to have better voice control due to the improvement in her posture. My personal fave of Patty's original tunes for last night was probably "Long Ride Home". She's played this at live shows a couple of times before, and it definitely needs the near-solo treatment with Patty's nice guitar flourishes. Very emotional and gripping. But the Paul Westerberg tune (name?) and of course "Crazy" seemed made for her as well; the audience always goes berserk when she wrings out her voice on the last verse of "Crazy"... I quite liked the heavy band accompaniment on the new tunes, though it was radically different from the treatment on her first album -- and even different from the band arrangements on "Flaming Red". I guess it just goes to show that it's Patty, and not just the guitar or production, that is worth hearing. :-) Definitely worth $7, even if I hadn't had the good fortune of watching the show with Jessica. :-) - -- | Greg Dunn | A fatal attraction, holding me | | gregdunn@indy.net | fast... how can I escape this | | GregDunn@aol.com | irresistible grasp? | | http://www.indy.net/~gregdunn/ | Pink Floyd | ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 5 Nov 1998 13:56:27 +1100 From: Andrew Fries Subject: Re: Alanis New CD I haven't heard this CD yet (never cared much for the first one) but I think I'll try to get a listen and to keep an open mind because I'm hearing some good things from the sources I tend to trust... On of them is Drum Media, our local street mag which just printed a very positive review. It concludes: .. with topics so heavily flooded with confessions, discoveries and awakenings, one can begin to understand the deeper motives of one undeniably successful Alanis Morisette. This is a woman who obviously feels it's more important to have the truth told than to bowl us over with smash hits Overall this second album captures the ear and more importantly the heart because it's very much a document of a spirit willing to tackle, head on, issues often considered too controversial and very personal. An album for those who can allow themselves a fresh, soul searching listen." __________________________________________________ "What the public wants is called politically unrealistic.Translated into English, that means power and privilege are opposed to it.
