I do not understand why I have been unable to e-mail people privately for the past couple of days. Hopefully I can get this fixed soon and quit bothering you all. As for now, I only have one more personal post to post to the whole list. Please forgive me! Thanks! Hi Yves, I'm so delighted to meet someone else on the Ecto list who is familiar with Iona. They are my favorite band -- well, they're right up there with Kate Bush, I should say! I didn't realize Iona was popular in France...or maybe they aren't, just like they are hardly ever heard of over here. In 1997 "Journey Into the Morn" only sold 800 copies in the U.S.A. Not much exposure over here, I'm afraid. The best concert I ever went to was Iona's....or I should say concertS, for I had the privilege of experiencing their performance two days in a row. It was fabulous! I'm so delighted to meet another Iona fan! :-) It's good to meet you! ~Sami~ n.p. "Say Something Good" - The River City People n.r. Theres a huge amount of fairly obscure stuff worth checking out. Personally I find Iona at the MOR end of celtic music and, as a born again agnostic with taoist leanings, dislike the christian slant of their music. Of this end of the spectrum I prefer Capercaillie or Runrig. Heres some more curious and possibly little known bands in the US: Kila - an irish off the wall band not to be confused with the gangsta rap band Killa. Kind of poguey punk trad irish on mind altering substances (ie Guinness). The fact that the lead singer can't sing doesn't seem to matter.... Shooglenifty: scottish band, instrumental - manic lead fiddle player. Mouth Music: several albums out - Shorelife is my fav. The best sort of afro-celt with creative techno elements. Very highly recommended. Great female lead vocals. I mentioned hotmail and iname because they are free so you can try them and then decide. I forgot yahoo on my list. AFAIK most of the costly ones are not filtered yet so they may be a possible solution. A common mistake is to think that because the address in the From: field contains a domain the spam comes from this domain. This is not true. Half of the spams I receive from a hotmail address are not sent from the hotmail mailserver. This is the same for aol BTW. > Just a note of info...Lisa Just another one. ;-) Best, - -- Yves. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Oct 1998 08:29:06 -0500 (EST) From: Michael Colford Subject: Re: painted pictures? I've owned "Painted Pictures" for a couple of months, and while I can honestly say I like it, it really hasn't made a very strong impact on me. I enjoyed Grey Eye Glances first album quite a bit, but "Painted Pictures" is not grabbing me the same way. Their songs are pleasant, melodic, lovely to listen to, but lacking the spark that powered October Project, who I find them to be similar to. There are only a couple of songs that stand out to me, so all in all, I would say it's a good album, but a little unremarkable. Michael n.p. Garbage - Version 2.0 n.r. I do email administration including maintaining spam filters, and I have never seen spam come from juno.com itself. juno.com and hotmail.com reply addresses are frequently _forged_ by spammers, or spammers sign up for hotmail or juno accounts as reply dropboxes. Both juno.com and hotmail.com have strong antispam policies, which include canceling hotmail or juno accounts of spammers, and as web-based email providers it's actually very hard to spam from their systems. Every spam I've ever seen that has a reply address containing hotmail.com or juno.com has come from somewhere else. The sad thing about the war on spam is that lazy or ignorant system administrators put in these kinds of blocks without actually trying to figure out where the spam actually comes from, and punish innocent people for someone else's crime. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Oct 1998 15:58:35 -0500 From: "joe n chuck" Subject: Re: The best Cure album/ happy n sad songs hi all! don keller wrote: >=Disintegration= is the =second= best Cure album; =Pornography= is the best. and mark lowry wrote: >So, _Seventeen Seconds_ is the best, _Disintegration_ next, and yes, >_Pornography_ has to be third, for me anyway. I love this band! They're from Edinburgh, and I'd describe their music as blend of Celtic and Drum&Bass-style techno. They also remind me of Outback, not in that they sound like Outback, but because they're blended styles in the same way Outback did. We've got some of their CDs at WBRS. The record company sent them to us, which I assume they wouldn't be doing if they weren't also distributing to stores around here, so this must be available. Anyone who knocks WXPN needs to listen for what passes for radio elsewhere. *sigh* KBCO, which used to be a wonderful station, is horrid now. It local owner sold it for millions (he's now running for the US Congress -- as if I'd ever vote for him after he sold the station!), and it's part of Jacor hell now. KBCO stands for Kolorful Boulder, Colorado... And Jacor almost moved it to Denver... The studios managed to remain in Boulder, but advertising, etc. are in Denver. The music... well, it's fairly repetitive, and you sure won't hear any of the above mentioned artists on it. It's too bad. It used to be quite good. The only independent station in the entire Boulder/Denver is a small Boulder AM station (I'm listening to it now) that is struggling to survive. The owner is trying to sell it, and he doesn't want to put anymore money in it. It's only on the air from 6 AM to 7 PM, and since there are only full-time dj's, they play full cd's from 9 AM - 4 PM Monday- Friday. However, for those remaining six hours and on the weekends (called "Acoustic Weekends), you'll hear great music. You can hear Dar Williams, Bill Morrissey, Susan McKeown, Altan, Natalie MacMaster, Grey Eye Glances (I heard one song!!), Richard Shindell, Moxy Fruvous, The Nields, etc. (I haven't heard Happy yet.) I'd heard rumors that WXPN was going on line. I wish... Then I could listen to good radio when KBVI's off the air. Oh, and if anyone on the list is rich and would like to buy this station, it's a goldmine of opportunity! The dj's would love to keep the same format. Hello 'philes, It may be old news, sorry if this is the case. While visiting the Throwing Muses website I discovered that Kristin started an online distribution of her work. Here is how it works: you subscribe (online with a credit card) and you can download in MP3 format one song per month for the coming year. The price is $14.95, a bit expensive but this is Kristin we are talking about, I paid 10$ for a single with *one* accoustic song on it! And the fact that she is receiving all the money is a big plus too. So run to the site! ;-) Regarding Francoise Hardy, it is true that she started her career singing stupid lyrics but for the last 20 years this is not the case. She is a "true" artist now but I fail to see the comparison with Tori. OK they both do what they want to do but so does Kate, Diamanda Galas, Patti Smith, Ani DiFranco, etc. If I had to define her music I would say that it is distant pop, her musics are accessible but her lyrics are cryptic. Her voice is hauting, with a special tone. She always gives the impression that she is talking, not singing (like Serge Gainsbourg). Yeah that could be a good description she is a kind of female Serge Gainsbourg. Sorry, I am bad at describing music! Best, - - -- Yves.
